  • Birds of Gunung Tambora, Sumbawa, Indonesia: Effects of Altitude, the 1815 Cataclysmic Volcanic Eruption and Trade
FORKTAIL 18 (2002): 49–61 Birds of Gunung Tambora, Sumbawa, Indonesia: effects of altitude, the 1815 cataclysmic volcanic eruption and trade COLIN R. TRAINOR In June-July 2000, a 10-day avifaunal survey on Gunung Tambora (2,850 m, site of the greatest volcanic eruption in recorded history), revealed an extraordinary mountain with a rather ordinary Sumbawan avifauna: low in total species number, with all species except two oriental montane specialists (Sunda Bush Warbler Cettia vulcania and Lesser Shortwing Brachypteryx leucophrys) occurring widely elsewhere on Sumbawa. Only 11 of 19 restricted-range bird species known for Sumbawa were recorded, with several exceptional absences speculated to result from the eruption. These included: Flores Green Pigeon Treron floris, Russet-capped Tesia Tesia everetti, Bare-throated Whistler Pachycephala nudigula, Flame-breasted Sunbird Nectarinia solaris, Yellow-browed White- eye Lophozosterops superciliaris and Scaly-crowned Honeyeater Lichmera lombokia. All 11 resticted- range species occurred at 1,200-1,600 m, and ten were found above 1,600 m, highlighting the conservation significance of hill and montane habitat. Populations of the Yellow-crested Cockatoo Cacatua sulphurea, Hill Myna Gracula religiosa, Chestnut-backed Thrush Zoothera dohertyi and Chestnut-capped Thrush Zoothera interpres have been greatly reduced by bird trade and hunting in the Tambora Important Bird Area, as has occurred through much of Nusa Tenggara. ‘in its fury, the eruption spared, of the inhabitants, not a although in other places some vegetation had re- single person, of the fauna, not a worm, of the flora, not a established (Vetter 1820 quoted in de Jong Boers 1995). blade of grass’ Francis (1831) in de Jong Boers (1995), Nine years after the eruption the former kingdoms of referring to the 1815 Tambora eruption.

Lombok is one of the priority developments in the tourism industry that has evolved over the past five years. The participation of young people in Lombok raised in the form of a volunteer community called GENPI which was first initiated by the youth of the Lombok Sumbawa volunteer community and used social media to disseminate Lombok Tourism. This research focuses on how GenPi develops effective tourism communication strategies through social media. By using the concept of community participation and social media, this research used a descriptive qualitative approach and conducted an in-depth interview as a data collection method. As a result, well-planned communication strategies and uses of social media help develop local tourism. Networking online and offline are essentials to disseminate excellence in the tourism area. • Sufism and the Sacred Feminine in Lombok, Indonesia
religions Article Sufism and the Sacred Feminine in Lombok, Indonesia: Situating Spirit Queen Dewi Anjani and Female Saints in Nahdlatul Wathan Bianca J. Smith Centre for Islamic Culture and Society, University of Mataram, Mataram 83125, Indonesia; [email protected] Abstract: This article is a feminist ethnographic exploration of how ‘indigenous’ notions of a ‘sacred feminine’ shape Sufi praxis on the island of Lombok in the eastern part of Indonesia in Southeast Asia. I demonstrate through long-term immersive anthropological fieldwork how in her indigenous form as Dewi Anjani ‘Spirit Queen of Jinn’ and as ‘Holy Saint of Allah’ who rules Lombok from Mount Rinjani, together with a living female saint and Murshida with whom she shares sacred kinship, these feminine beings shape the kind of Sufi praxis that has formed in the largest local Islamic organization in Lombok, Nahdlatul Wathan, and its Sufi order, Hizib Nahdlatul Wathan. Arguments are situated in a Sufi feminist standpoint, revealing how an active integration of indigeneity into understandings of mystical experience gives meaning to the sacred feminine in aspects of Sufi praxis in both complementary and hierarchical ways without challenging Islamic gender constructs that reproduce patriarchal expressions of Sufism and Islam. Introduction rel12080563 The ‘sacred (also read as divine) feminine’ as cultural praxis is an under-researched area in the anthropology of Sufism in Indonesia, mostly because normative Sufism as Academic Editors: Milad Milani, organized through the tariqa, like Islam, is structurally and ideologically patriarchal and Zahra Taheri and Aydogan Kars formally speaks to a male audience.

Majapahit no.62, Mataram, Indonesia 2Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC), Syiah Kuala University, Jl. Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Hasan, Gampong Pie, Banda Aceh, Indonesia Abstract. The past earthquake records in North Lombok show the high level of earthquake hazard in this area. The maximum magnitude of the earthquake was 6.4 Mw on May 30th, 1979. But, there were no tsunami events records due to those earthquakes. Nevertheless, this area is very close to Mataram City (province capital city) and tourism area. Therefore, the assessment of tsunami hazard is very important. The tsunami simulation was conducted by using COMCOT Model, which is based on the North Lombok Earthquake as the initial condition. The simulation result shows the prediction of tsunami travel time is about 18 ~ 20 minutes from the source location to Mataram City. The height of the tsunami wave is 0.13 ~ 0.20 meters due to the earthquake magnitude is about 6 Mw. 1 Introduction Mataram City has recorded 459,314 persons in 2016 and the population growth was about 2.02% [4]. The average The Lombok Island is located exactly on the east side of population density of Mataram City was 7,493 persons Bali Island. This island and Sumbawa Island are part of per square kilometer.

Pancaka, No. 7B Mataram, Lombok Barat, Nusa Tenggara Barat, Indonesia Phone: +62 370 628382 Fax. +62 370 631725 E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Wetu Telu is a syncretism of belief prevalent in West Lombok region. Danghyang Dwijendra from Daha in East Java region is regarded as the founder of the Watu Telu cult. He came to the Island of Lombok to teach enlightenment. One of the Ashram where he developed Hindu teaching and religion was Suranadi, a beautiful holy place. That Ashram was encircled by holy water, which currently can still be used by the Hindu devotees in performing their sacred sacrifice (yajnya). This study is aimed at knowing social and religious aspects of Wetu Telu as cultural heritage. The data is obtained through literature review and in-depth interview with public figures. From the data analysis, it is obtained that the history and social background of the Sasak people who inhab- it the island is a mix of ethnic groups and culture. With this background, Wetu Telu which is also the syncretism of Hindu, Buddha, Islam, and local culture has a composite nature by taking only important matters without leaving its original teaching. Wetu Telu is considered to be Lombok Hindu teaching; and Wetu Telu is as inseparable part of holy pilgrimage (dharma yatra) of Danghyang Nirartha to Lombok in giving enlightenment and spiritual happiness to the people of Lombok.

PROJECT 24 World Water Day 2020 Providing Clean Water in Lombok, Indonesia Between the Indian and Pacific Oceans is the archipelago island nation of Indonesia – acclaimed for pristine resort beaches and lush green tropical forested volcanic mountains that produce robust coffee beans. Indonesia is not only an island between two oceans, it is separated by extremes of natural beauty and other areas where refuse is cast aside by islanders who unintentionally pollute water supplies when doing so. Families are in a constant state of pursuit – for work, water and assistance to change their conditions. Work that was once nearby has been replaced with makeshift jobs in distant locations for adults, and the children are becoming ill from waterborne diseases that are invading well water that drink without boiling in school. Their outlook is surprisingly positive given the radical changes produced by unforgiving shaking ground and rubble that lines the streets as far as the eye can see. Water is collected by adults and children alike who walk 5-6 kilometers daily, and what they collect is from rivers since most wells were damaged from the earthquake. Rainwater is trapped during rainy season by those without well access. Whatever their source of water, it is untreated and contaminated by either the environment or storage containers that are unclean or used for multiple purposes without proper washing and sanitization between uses. The Lombok education system is challenged with teachers in rural community schools who lack the knowledge and resources to provide health and hygiene education to students. The result is an endless cycle of generations who throw garbage into rivers, live in dirty environments and use unsanitary bathrooms.
