Let’s make 2021 the year we, as a church family, become more ROOTED IN CHRIST than ever before. Let’s feed on His Word by studying and meditating on it in our private time, coming together to discuss it with one another, and hearing it preached and proclaimed. Most importantly, let’s ask God to help us live it out through the power of the Holy Spirit in us. Remember that you can join others in discussing what you’ve read by attending the class that meets in the gym from 10 – 10:45 AM each Sunday. Any Sunday is a great time to begin. Minister [email protected] Community-Wide Prayer at Harrodsburg Community Church with their minister, Bro. Terry Morrison Hosting on Saturday, February 13, 8 AM. Please let Bro. John know if you plan on attending and if you would rather be connected by conference call. Never Stop Praying Like most, when I read 1 Thessalonians 5:17 in the Bible, "Never stop praying", "Pray without ceasing", or "Pray at all times", depending on which translation of the Bible being read, I often think how I would ever even attempt to do that. Someone once challenged me with the following: When your heart is full of praise to God - pray. When you are thankful - pray. When you are worried - pray. When you are afraid - pray. When you are concerned about someone, some situation, or even about yourself - pray. We are privileged to be able to talk with The Creator of the Universe at any time of the day or night about anything. The Bible teaches us to pray in Jesus Name. Author Max Lucado writes, "No other spiritual activity is guaranteed such results. God is moved by the humble, prayerful heart. God is moved by prayer." So always seek the Lord first in every situation in life and remember to - never stop praying. Next Steps Class, Sunday, February 21, 2021, 5 PM, Student Center This is an informal two-session class led by our Senior Minister Greg Warren and me. During this time, you will learn about the core Biblical beliefs of our church, what it means to be a church member, hear from other staff members, learn about the many different ministries, and even be given the opportunity to discover how God uniquely designed you to serve Him in His kingdom work here on earth. And if you would like, you can even join in on a tour of our church building, including the children's basement area that is currently under construction. If you plan to attend, please let Bro. Greg, me, or Debbie in the church office know, and we will look forward to seeing you there. Social distancing, masks and temperature checks are still required to enter the building for the time being. This past week, we started a new series that we titled “Back to the Basics”. We are taking the month of February to look at the core beliefs of our Christian faith. One of the big things that we strive for in the student ministry, is to equip the students with the biblical truths that they will need to be the leaders of tomorrow.

  • Brian Wilson's Spacious Estate in West Suburban St
May 24, 1998---- The backyard of Brian Wilson's spacious estate in west suburban St. Charles overlooks a calm pond. A playground set stands near the water. Wilson slowly walks out of the basement studio in the home he shares with wife Melinda and daughters Daria, 2, and Delanie, 6 months old. Wilson squints into the midday sun. He looks at a playground slide. Then he looks at a swing set. Wilson elects to sit down on the saddle swing. In a life of storied ups and downs, Wilson's career is on the upswing. The June release of ``Imagination'' (Giant Records) is a return to 1966's ``Pet Sounds'' in terms of orchestration and instrumentation, with its the ambitious patterns of tympanies and snare drums. But equally important are Wilson's vocals, which are the smoothest and most soulful since 1970's ``Sunflower.'' Wilson, 55, has suddenly defied age. Mick Jagger and Pete Townshend are brittle rock 'n' roll barnacles. Ray Davies and Paul McCartney have matured gracefully. Yet here's Wilson singing with effervescent hope on ``Dream Angel,'' which he co-wrote with his co-producer Joe Thomas and Jim Peterik of Survivor and Ides of March fame. The song was inspired by Wilson's new daughters. They make him happy. He says that is why he is writing happy music. On ``Dream Angel,'' Wilson even returned to the tight, late '50s harmonies of the Dell Vikings (``Come Go With Me'') and the Four Freshmen - happy-go-lucky voices that influenced the Beach Boys when they were young.

  • 1 Music 262: Rock Music, History and Social Analysis, Beach Boys
Music 262: Rock Music, History and Social Analysis, Beach Boys [Music Playing on Piano] [Brian Ward]: So we have this group from America that comes out of surf rock and they also borrow from some jazz vocal traditions and they really are America’s answer to The Beatles. Because they came around at the same time The Beatles hit the market. Both of these groups are symbiotic. They have this sympathetic relationship. They feed off of each other and they compete with each other, The Beatles and The Beach Boys. The result of that is all this great music. Let’s talk about The Beach Boys for a minute. It’s really a family affair. We have these brothers: Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson. They have their cousin, Mike Love and their neighbor Alan Jardine who plays drums. Their songs are about the beach, paradise, cars, hot rods, California girls. So there’s this theme of California in all of their music and this lifestyle and that’s where they’re from. Their music is a combination of this jazz group called The Four Freshmen. It was a jazz vocal group that sang in really close four part harmony. Brian Wilson just loved this group and he pattern The Beach Boys’ vocal harmonies after this jazz group called The Four Freshmen. Another big part of their music is this surf style that was around them as they were developing as a band. So they adopted this surf style of rock n’ roll, of guitar driven instrumental rock. So you combine these two things, these beautiful four part harmonies with the surf rock and you get The Beach Boys.

  • SURF MUSIC by Geoffrey Himes
SURF MUSIC By Geoffrey Himes It often seems that the United States is a pool table that has been tilted so all its hopes and dreams roll to the west. Whenever Americans want a new and better life, they head toward the setting sun. Whether it was the white-canvas covered wagons of the 1850s, the rusty Okie jalopies of the 1930s or the painted hippie vans of the 1960s, the direction is always westward—and eventually they collect in the pool table’s corner pocket known as Southern California. When Chuck Berry went chasing after his imagined utopia in the song “Promised Land," where did he end up? Los Angeles. Thousands of Hollywood movies had advertised Southern California as a nirvana of palm trees, sunshine, beautiful girls and beautiful boys, convincing folks from Oklahoma, Kansas and Ohio to pack up and move to the coast. By the end of the 1950s, the area around L.A. was full of almost as many transplanted Midwesterners as native Californians. The natives knew the region was no utopia, but the first and second-generation immigrants, these strangers in paradise, still clung to the notion of America’s western edge as the place where their dreams might come true. The teens and twentysomethings in these families—too young and too new to the West Coast to be disillusioned— turned that utopian impulse into a new kind of rock'n'roll: surf music. Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, whose father and mother had moved to California from Kansas and Minnesota respectively, formed the Beach Boys.

  • The Harris Family at Eagle Lake As Told by Carl Wilson to Caroline Harris
The Harris Family at Eagle Lake As Told by Carl Wilson to Caroline Harris "My grandfather, Isaac Harris, was a contractor in Brooklyn who built roads and subways in New York City. His crew were Italians and fond of him. When he died they wanted a marching band for his funeral but his wife would not allow it. In the late 1880's he drove all around this area in a horse and carriage looking for a place to build a summer house. He decided on 'Harris Point' on what was then Long Pond, then Chilson Pond, then Eagle Lake. He became the first non-native in the area. His house was built in 1891. He was then know as 'Long Pond Harris' since there was also a "Paradox Harris' and a 'Pyramid Harris'. His land was bought from Anson Moore, the father of Alson Moore whom some of us remember. They were good farmers and supplied many people milk, cream, butter and vegetables. His wife was Jenny DeZalia and the story is that he courted her for 14 years until her father told him he should make up his mind or stop coming. Other supplies were brought in the daily stage (which also delivered the mail) from Adkins and Scotts. The Harris Land had been pasture, and all the large trees have grown in since that time. The area which lately had a cabin and dump, belonging now to Bill Giesel, was a cornfeild. And , the 'main' road to Crown Point came in approximately the way we do and went east behind 'Moore's Ledge' to joint the present Crown Point Road before the Corduroy Road was laid across the swamp.
