Springtide Academy 2018 programmaboekje DEF.indd 4 21/09/2018 18:57 THE QUEST FOR A PLANETARY EQUILIBRIUM

We say welcome to the students from Groningen and beyond, which is the rest of the world. Welcome to Springtij, Dutch for extreme High Tide, when the sea rises more than average, due to a specific positioning between sun and moon. And even more sea rising, when climate change keeps persisting, as we are now experiencing and witnessing. Our Academy is for the Young. You will meet with the best of teachers, and a crowd of green pioneers, who assemble on the island for three days, 900 in total, attending 80 different classes on Energy, Climate, Resources, Innovation, Investments, Biodiversity and Meaning Beyond all this.

These subjects do not stand by themselves, they are analysed and handled in a framework of interrelationships, they are a system, as is well illustrated in a diagram of the German Environment Agency. The System is a knot of connections between Stocks and Flows. Wherever you interfere, the whole reacts. The quest for a planetary equilibrium, which takes into account this whole, is the essential task of the Academy.

We talk and debate about the variables as such, energy, climate and being in the centre, but keep this interconnectedness in mind. Why on this island? Learning about the data can be tough, so be in for a shock, as drama is lurking everywhere: climate change is encroaching rapidly. To absorb this, to come to understand it is confronting, as we are looking into a black hole, the future of an atmosphere warming up to 2ºC, 3ºC, and more. Not in a too distant future.

On our island there is comfort against this sorrow. Natural beauty. Light. Sea. Horizon. Sky. Spectacular sunsets. The forest, real darkness at night, stars as bright as they should be. This is where recovery can be found. Being studious and scientific demands the support value of nature and art. On the island this is what you can expect.

Springtide Academy 2018 programmaboekje DEF.indd 6 21/09/2018 18:57 WHERE THE YOUNG MEET THE ELDER, IN SEARCH OF A NEW BALANCE

The second edition of Springtide Academy is here! We welcome our students of the ‘EUREC Sustainable Energy System Management Master’ (SESyM), the ‘EUREC Renewable Energy Master’ (EMRE) and the ‘Master Energy for Society’ (E4S) to the island Terschelling.

Springtij Forum Terschelling is a leading podium for debating a broad range of sustainable development issues. Springtij wants to contribute to accelerating sustainable development by identifying the frontiers, discussing trends, organising the debate and bringing people together. What started as a local, national initiative has grown into an international gathering of people aligned in their ambition to contribute to a more sustainable world. This year’s theme is ‘In search of a new balance’.

The Springtij Forum themes are very relevant for our Master students. From the fi rst moment it was clear that Springtij should also be a place where ‘The Young meet the Elder’. Springtij Forum offers a unique opportunity to bring together young professionals and scientists with those who have been active in the sustainability world for decades already. We felt that the added value of the Springtide Academy should be one of mutual benefi ts. Not only the students should be offered an interesting and diversifi ed programme provided by leading professionals, scientists and politicians, the ‘elder’ should also be given the opportunity to enrich their thinking by getting access to ideas of the ‘young’.

Enough reasons to start the preparations of the fi rst edition of Springtide Academy in 2017. In a joined effort with the Springtij organisation and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences built the fi rst Spring tide Academy programme for the EMRE and SESyM Masters. We received enthusiastic responses, both from the students and the experts involved.

This year we especially welcome the students of our brand new Master ‘Energy for Society’ (E4S). 60 Master students will attend a diverse, attractive Springtide programme. Students will meet leading experts in various fi elds of expertise, not just by listening to lectures. There is room for ‘face to face’ meetings with experts. The programme offers workshops, lectures, design meetings (charrette) and debate sessions. And of course we should not forget that we meet in a festival setting. This means that these two days will not be fi lled with lectures and workshops alone but that there will be ample time to meet each other and to enjoy the island.

On behalf of the Staff of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences I wish you all an unforgettable second edition of the Springtide Academy!
