Here, along the far edge of the continent, dolphins swim just offshore and the view takes in coastal mountains that seem to plunge straight into the Pacific. And so they come—bicyclists and skaters along the world’s longest oceanfront bike path, swimmers and surfers, and, for that matter, plenty of folks who choose to do little more than people-watch while they wait for sunsets like something out of a dream. Santa Monica helped revolutionize the American dining scene, and the city’s restaurants continue to pioneer new approaches and establish trends that are changing the way the country eats.

Page 20

PG 22–35 Foodie Spots PG 27 Chefs: Living the Life PG 32 Healthy Living PG 49 Nightlife ver since it emerged as an Einternational culinary destination in the 1980s, Santa Monica has remained in the top echelon of American dining, thanks to its many celebrity chefs and a new generation of culinary innovators who continue to invigorate the city’s dining scene.

In Santa Monica, chefs find their inspiration from many sources. With its incredible cultural and ethnic mix, Southern California is one of the world’s most diverse places. So without traveling halfway around the world, local chefs have the chance to sample a huge range of cuisines, and often end up integrating varied global influences into their cooking.

Santa Monica was in the vanguard of the local foods movement long before it became mainstream, and the use of sustainable, organic ingredients is central to the cooking approaches of leading chefs around town. They’re also able to take advantage of the remarkable fruits and vegetables grown in California. Travel + Leisure magazine named the Downtown Santa Monica Farmers’ Market the best in the United States, and the bounty at the city’s farmers’ markets provides an endless source of premium (and often unusual) ingredients from area farms and ranches. You’ll find major works of public art—sculptures, murals, and ceramics—that bring color and creativity to city streets. Free jazz, classical, and pop concerts add music to summer nights, while in venues from the state- of-the-art Broad Stage to tiny 60-seat theaters, you can catch memorable live performances throughout the year.

The city’s many galleries display works by artists from around the world, as well as internationally acclaimed local artists who are part of a long Santa Monica creative tradition that includes giants such as David Hockney and Richard Diebenkorn, who found inspiration in the city’s incredible light and setting.

As Asuka Hisa, director of education at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, said, “Santa Monica is driven by people who desire and do good things, especially in arts and culture. This is a smart city, a 21st , yet it remains down to earth. There’s innovation going on in every corner…” X Opposite page: Christine Thomas. This page: Santa Monica Place. This page: Thomas. The question in Santa Monica isn’t what you’re going to do but how to find the time to do it all. That’s because on any day of the year you can go for a ride on the world’s longest oceanfront bike path, surf perfect waves, or try yoga on the beach.

With a long and unique tradition, sports and fitness have always been central to Santa Monica’s civic identity. As an early haven for surfing in California, the birthplace of beach volleyball, and the epicenter for the revolution that rocked the skateboarding world in the 1970s, Santa Monica helped popularize onetime fringe sports that have moved into the mainstream of American culture.
