2012 Scrw Booklet Guts.Indd 38th Annual Awards Booklet 2011 - 2012 Southern California Restaurant Writers The Southern California Restaurant Writers, a California non-profit organiza- tion, was established thirty-eight years ago by Doris Crandall. The ultimate goal is to aid and improve the restaurant industry in the Southern California area. To further this goal, SCRW awards individuals and restaurants whose standards of quality and service have been found to be of special merit. 2011 marks our 37th year presenting awards to restaurateurs, their management and staff members for outstanding dedication in this industry. SCRW publishes for the general public the recipients of these awards and also features the information on their website- www.southerncaliforniarestaurantwriters.com. In an effort to advance the education of worthy individuals in the fields of restaurant service, enology, and the culinary arts, SCRW established a scholarship program, now called The Doris Crandall Scholarship Fund. Since its inception the scholarship program, which is administered by SCRW, has donated in excess of one hundred twenty-five thousand dol- lars to recipients that in past years have included students attending and participating in various culinary programs available at community colleges in Southern California including San Bernardino Valley College, Orange Coast Collage, Golden West College, Glendale College, Riverside Community Col- lege, Santa Barbara Community College, and the Oxnard College Founda- tion. Our process of evaluation is based on a point system. Those restaurants that receive eighty to one hundred points, based on a number of categories- food, service, appropriate beverages, parking, and ambiance, create a very distinct group that we honor with our annual awards banquet. Monies raised by this program fund the organization’s scholarship efforts. Five Stars-our highest honor, requires a special vote of the membership and the restaurant must have received an accumulative total of ninety-five points or above to be considered. Four Stars-are presented to restaurants scoring ninety points or more. Three Stars-are awarded to those restaurants between eighty-five and eighty-nine points. Two Stars-go to locations accumulating eighty to eighty-four points. Restaurants opening or that have been substantially reorganized during the evaluation period and earning eighty points or more are categorized as Promising Newcomers. Restaurants with limited hours or other unique features may be recognized with a Special Value or Before Five certificate. Special recognition is given for outstanding Sunday Brunch. Corporate- owned restaurants called Multiple Locations are also listed. I Restaurants located in California but out of the greater Southern Califor- nia area may be evaluated and appear as Recommended. The Southern California Restaurant Writers may present additional awards to Restaurateur, Owner/Entrepreneur, F & B Director, Chef, Manger, Sommelier, Pastry Chef, Servers, Host, and Humanitarian of the Year, and others. Your attendance at our yearly awards presentation and your continu- ing support of our organization is greatly appreciated. We, the members of SCRW, are here to not only aid those in the industry but to inform the general public of the very best dining experiences in the Southern California market area. The creativity of those in the industry located in our area is heralded and written about around the world and we thank you for allowing us to be part of the process. We congratulate you on your accomplishments and look forward to more exciting innovations from you and your associates now and in future years. High praise, in fact, too high. But hyperbole aside, LA truly is a GREAT and amazingly diverse restaurant city, and many of the top restaurants are in the downtown area. Olvera Street If you have a few hours, I suggest a walk to the Union Station (800 N. Alameda St.) and stroll through the magnificent building, then walk a block north to Olvera Street for some old LA and see the roots of this great city (many shops selling Mexican goods and gifts to bring home to the family), then a short walk to the Italian American Museum (644 N. Main St.) to see what is on exhibit (everything is one or two blocks away from this town). End your adventure at Philippe The Original (1001 N. Alameda St) for old LA. The restaurant dates back to 1908 and is where the French Dip Beef Sandwich was invented! Great diner-type food but you must try the French Dip Beef Sandwich (ask for a double- dip, which means both sides of the bun are dipped in the beef au jus).

  • LA VIE EN ROSE LIVIN’ and LOVIN’ with LOUIS ARMSTRONG
LA VIE EN ROSE LIVIN’ and LOVIN’ with LOUIS ARMSTRONG Words are completely inadequate when attempting to convey the spirit of Louis Armstrong to anyone unfamiliar with his genius. It is far better to learn about Armstrong, also known as Satchmo, Pops, Papa Dip, through his music. And yet, to define his accomplishment solely through music is to overlook the totality of his unique contributions to the world. There is much to discover when we widen our focus. Through his story, we can examine how technology can be used to document change through the lens of a single person’s life. His long career spans the timeline of developing media: print media, photography, sound recordings, radio and television broadcasting, and film. Even today his legacy is spread through developing new media. With Internet access, any student can get their daily dose of Satchmo through iTunes, YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter. Satchmo used every means possible to create and communicate, and he was truly a pioneer exploring new technologies. Armstrong was constantly recording his story, first with pen and paper, next using with his trusty typewriter to write memoirs, essays and letters. He took to lugging around a reel‐to‐reel tape recorder on tour. He tucked scissors and scotch tape in his pockets to make collages whenever he had a spare moment. He amassed a personal collection of 1,600 recordings, 650 home recorded tapes in hand‐decorated boxes, 5,000 photographs, and 86 scrapbooks. He was often the first African American performer to break through racial barriers — in radio programs, animated shorts, early soundies, television shows, commercial advertisements, and in full‐length feature films — in a time when people of color could not walk through the front door of many public establishments, sit in the front of the bus, or go to an integrated school.

  • Unsatisfaction Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Patti Smith
No sé cuánto llevo acostada. Empecé meditando (dizque shabassana, la postura del cadáver), me morí, me dormí, no sé qué pasó. Intento levantarme.
