Randall-1 / INTRODUCTIOK In recent years considerable interest has been aroused by the damage -to reefs in the tropical Pacific caused. by large populations of the crown-of-thorns starfish (~canthasterplanci), a coral predator. Survey teams have made starfish counts and assessed the damage to reefs at a number of islands. Most of this activity has taken place in the western Pacific, partic- ularly the Trust Territory and Grea-t Barrier Reef. Very little information has been obtained on the relative abundance of this starfish and -the condition of the coral reefs i.n southeast Oceania. The opportunity to visit a number of islands in this remote part of the Pacific was provided by a marine biological expedition carried out during the period December 1, 1970 to May 20, 1971 on the 99-foot schooner "Westward" owned and operated at that time by the Oceanic Foundation. During the expediti.on, Bishop Museum marine bi.ologists Dennis M. Devaney and John E. Randall conducted a reconnaissance for the crown- of-thori~s starfish at the various islands visited. When the starfish were present in rlurnber-s, an assessment was made of their damage .to the coral reefs. At several places, measure- ments, gonad samples, and color notes were -taken of +. planci (Table 1). The expedition was Cinanccd by a grant to tlie Bishop Museulri f rorn the National Geographic Society, augmented by funds from the Oceanic Foundation for operation of the vcssel. Support for the surveys of A. planci was provided hy the Sca Grant Program of tlie University o:f liawai.i. A boat was carried :frorn the seaward side, across t;he reef flat -to the 1.agoon. A search. :for Acanthaster was carried ou-t i.a the ~iester-I?. lagoon^ (pig. 2, A)-wi ~h SCUBA and by s1c:i.n diving. Considerab1.e li.ve coral was prcse:nt along the sides and -lop of coral. la3olls as wel.1 as i:n isolated patches on the sandy lagoon hot-tom (maxi.mu111 clep-lh, 11.0 fee.t). At one linol.1, extending from a dc]>th. of approximately 30 fee-t to near tbe surface, a large Acan-i;h.asCer was collected in mid-afternoon along the sj.de of -the knoll at a clep-th of 20 feet. Color notes -taken a-t the ti.me of capture revealed the starfish to have the abora-1 side greyish -to tan with the spines reddish. No recent feeding scars were seen, and tbe animal was not feeding when taken. Further survey o:f -the lmoll and adjacent kno1.l~failed -to reveal additiolial. Acanthaster. Measurement da%a concerning this specimen are presented in Table 1. Two SCUBA dives were made by Randall and the "Westward" crew off the seaward side of the reef al~ongthe northwestern side of the a-toll. The :l'i.rst dive (~ig.2, R) revealed a rather steep slope with live coral and coral rubbl~e; no --Acanthaster -was seen nor vas there any sign o:T feed:iLng by star- fi.sh.. The second dive, (pig. 2, C) which was made farl:her sou-th., revealed even richer coral growkh and more vari.ed. topography with caves, etc. ; again, there was no sign of Acanthas-ter nor evidence of, coral prcda-t:i.on. He is married to Noeleen and has two sons and three grandchildren. Edward H. Gates was a prominent leader in early Seventh-day Adventist mission work in the Pacific Islands and Southeast Asia. Early Life and Ministry Edward Harmon Gates was born on April 1, 1855, in the rural village of Munson, east of Cleveland, Ohio. He joined the Seventh-day Adventist church when he was approximately nineteen years of age as a result of reading various tracts and the Advent Review and Sabbath Herald. He began preaching in Ohio and was ordained in 1879. To improve his understanding of Scripture he attended Battle Creek College1 where he met Ida Ellen Sharpe.2 They married in Battle Creek on February 22, 1881, Uriah Smith conducting the service.3

Background The capital, Suva, is on the southeastern shore of Viti Levu. Fifty-four percent of the population are indigenous Fijians (Melanesians), and forty percent are descendants of Hindu Indian laborers originally brought in to work on the sugar cane plantations. There is a small percentage of people of Polynesian descent in the eastern islands.1 Among the early Europeans to enter Fijian waters were Abel Tasman (1643) and James Cook (1774). Methodist missionaries arrived in the nineteenth century and established a Christian base, having converted influential chiefs who, in turn led their clans to accept the faith together with many Western social mores. The country became a British crown colony in 1894 and gained its independence in 1970. Friction has developed between the indigenous Fijians and Indo- Fijians, the indigenous chiefs gaining the upper hand with sole land rights under a republican government since 1987.2 Arrival of Seventh-day Adventists The missionary ship “Pitcairn” reached Suva, Fiji, on August 3, 1891.

CHEPSTOW-LUSTY Department of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge, Downing Street, Cambridge CB2 3EA The vegetation of the raised coralline Henderson Island and Oeno Atoll (Pitcairn Group, south-central Pacific Ocean) is described from cover-abundance values of the vascular flora sampled in 10 x 10 m quadrats. Exploratory data analysis by detrended correspondence analysis and two-way indicator species analysis was used to summarize the resulting data matrices for each island, and to aid definition of vegetation types. For Henderson, six major vegetation communities are described, which are often closely linked to geomorphology: beachfront, embayment forests, open limestone scrub, cliff and ledge, exposed cliff top, and plateau forests. For Oeno, four main vegetation communities are described: open sandy littoral, Argusia scrub, closed forest, and coconut grove. For each island, the main vegetation types were further subdivided into a number of communities depending on the proportions of various taxa. Brief qualitative descriptions of the vegetation of Ducie and Pitcairn are also given. Anthropogenic communities, some of which are highly invasive, are widespread on Pitcairn. Adequate conservation measures must be given to all islands in the Pitcairn Group; this will protect not only the endemic-rich and possibly unique plateau forests of Henderson, but also the species-poor and scientifically important analogues of vegetation types which occur elsewhere in the Pacific islands.

RAND ALL^ ABSTRACT A total of 348 species of marine fishes are recorded from the four Pitcairn Islands in southeastern Oceania: Pitcairn, Henderson, and the atolls Oeno and Ducie. Nearly all of the species listed are from collections made by the author and associates in 1970-71 and deposited in the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu. Thirty-three of these were new species when they were collected but have since been described. Twenty-six species are listed only by genus, 15 of which appear to be undescribed and are under study; the remaining 11 are unidentified. Five species of fishes are presently known only from the Pitcairn Islands: Sargocentron megalops, Hemitaurichthys multispinosus, Ammodytes sp., Enneapterygius ornatus, and Alticus sp. Of the 335 species from the Pitcairn Islands that are shore fishes (the other 13 being regarded as pelagic), 284 are tropical species that are wide-ranging in the central and western Pacific, many of which extend their distribution into the Indian Ocean. Thirty-six of the Pitcairn fishes occur only in the Southern Hemisphere south of latitude 14' S; 21 of these are found only south of 20"s.
