Material traces refer to both the moving image products and the assortment of documentation about the processes of television as industrial and creative endeavors. By identifying the development of television-specific archives and collecting areas in the 1950s to the 1970s, the dissertation contributes to television studies, specifically pointing out how television materials were conceived as cultural and historical materials “worthy” of preservation and academic study. -

A HISTORICAL/CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE TV SERIES THE FUGITIVE THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the University of North Texas in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE By David P. Pierson, B.S. Denton, Texas May, 1993 Pierson, David P., A Historical/Critical Analysis Of The TV Series The Fugitive. Master of Science (Radio/TV/Film), May 1993, 168 pp., bibliography, 70 titles. In many respects, the popular 1960's television series, The Fugitive perfectly captured the swelling disillusionment with authority, alienation, and discontent that soon encompassed American society. This historical/critical study provides a broad overview of the economic, social, and political climate that surrounded the creation of The Fugitive. The primary focus of this study is the analysis of five discursive topics (individualism, marriage, justice & authority, professionalism, science and technology) within selected episodes and to show how they relate to broader cultural debates which occurred at that time. Finally, this study argues that The Fui1gitive is a part of a television adventure subgenre which we may classify as the contemporary "wanderer-hero" narrative and traces its evolution through selected television series from the last three decades. Ogles Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 2 ABSTRACT SELBY, SHAWN M., Ph.D., August 2008, History Congress, Culture and Capitalism: Congressional Hearings into Cultural Regulation, 1953-1967 (439 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Kevin M. Mattson This dissertation describes the series investigations and hearings into cultural regulation that took place before the U.S. congress between 1953 and 1967. Beginning with Senate inquiries into juvenile delinquency and ending with the creation of the public broadcasting system in 1967, the dissertation argues that lawmakers and witnesses repeatedly emphasized internal industry oversight and the power of competition within the culture industry to regulate cultural products like comic books, movies and television. Public television was seen as a solution to the problem that met the demands lawmakers had placed upon their investigations. Existing works tending to focus on matters of quality or social science overlook the economic and regulatory aspects of congress’s activities.
