Requiem Eucharist for the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed for All Souls’ Sunday 1 November 2020 3.00 pm Welcome to St Edmundsbury Cathedral In this afternoon’s All Souls’ Service we remember with thanksgiving the people we love who have died. The Commemoration of the departed on All Souls’ Day celebrates the saints in a more intimate way than All Saints’ Day. It allows us to remember with thanksgiving before God those whom we have known directly: those who gave us life, or who supported and encouraged us on life’s journey or who nurtured us in faith. In our worship, we sense that it is a fearful thing to come before the unutterable goodness and holiness of God, even for those who are redeemed in Christ; that it is searing as well as life-giving to experience God’s mercy. This instinct is expressed in the liturgy of All Souls’ Day. During this service, everyone is invited to bring the names of loved ones departed, written on the small white card crosses, to the cross before the altar, and to light a prayer candle there. Names will not be read aloud so that the total focus of this part of the liturgy may be on silent prayer and our individual commendation to God of those whom we remember but see no more. I suppose they thought I was just the build for it because I was long and skinny for my age (and still am) and in any case I didn't mind it much, to tell you the truth, because running had always been made much of in our family, especially running away from the police. I've always been a good runner, quick and with a big stride as well, the only trouble being that no matter how fast I run, and I did a very fair lick even though I do say so myself, it didn't stop me getting caught by the cops after that bakery job. You might think it a bit rare, having long-distance crosscountry runners in Borstal, thinking that the first thing a long-distance cross-country runner would do when they set him loose at them fields and woods would be to run as far away from the place as he could get on a bellyful of Borstal slumgullion--but you're wrong, and I'll tell you why. The first thing is that them bastards over us aren't as daft as they most of the time look, and for another thing I'm not so daft as I would look if I tried to make a break for it on my longdistance running, because to abscond and then get caught is nothing but a mug's game, and I'm not falling for it. -

CHAPTER XXXVIII. INTERROGATIVE PRONOUNS. FORM. 1. The interrogative pronouns are who, what, which and whether. Only who is declined: Nom. who, Gen. whose, Obj. whom. For the declension of whoever, whosoever and whoso, and for details about the use of these compounds see Ch. XLI. 2. Obs. I. The genitive of the word-group who else is formed in three ways: whose else, who else's, whose else's. The first form is grammatically the most correct, else being an adverb. It is also the oldest and is still preferred when no noun follows. Who else's is now the common form when a noun follows, and whose else's, like other cumulate forms, may be considered as vulgar. Family of Alan Ellis convinced he is not getting the treatment his condition merits Thu, Dec 27, 2018, 00:01 Conor Gallagher Follow When Alan Ellis appeared in court in last October to plead guilty to his latest offence he was surrounded by a phalanx of prison guards in full riot gear – a security procedure known as “barrier handling”. For the last few years Ellis has been subjected to this barrier handling anytime he left his cell to shower, exercise or see his family or lawyer. Coming to court was no different. As he emerged from a side door into Court Seven’s cramped defendant’s area in the Criminal Courts of Justice, three guards, including two with riot shields, shuffled along beside him. Usually a fourth officer would walk behind capturing everything on camera – a precaution in case violence breaks out – but on this occasion the judge had refused permission to film in the court. Ellis is a 26-year-old man who has spent the last six years in prison, most of it in solitary confinement on 23-hour lock- up. He is regarded by prison staff as one of the two most dangerous inmates in the country, the other being Leon Wright, a young man serving a 13-year term for a series of violent robberies and hijackings. “It would certainly be between him and Leon,” says a staff member in Mountjoy Prison. -
