Buffering of forest soils is very tied system mechanism which inhibits potential impacts of soil acidification. In the landscape spheres, it is naturally differentiated due to local variations in influences of soil forming factors. Bedrock as well as subsoil geochemistry, slide threatenings or intraskeletic erosion and character of humification belong to significant soil forming factors that undermine the soil buffer capacity. Undoubtedly the soil buffer system differentiates in various regions and in various geotectonical units. Dissimilarities in classifications of forest soil buffer potentials were evaluated according to runtime forestry biogeographical regionalization in the Czech Republic. Buffer potentials of the forest soils were classified into five level carbonate-iron scale according to intervals of cation exchange capacity ( CEC ) and basic saturation (BS ). For selected natural forest areas (NFA), the soil buffer potentials were obtained in respect to defined evaluated sites in combinations of area-specified forest altitudinal zones (NFA-FAZ), edaphic categories (NFA-EC) and management populations of forest types (NFA-MP). Two approaches for descriptions of soil buffering classes were compared according to CEC and BS . An additive method of δH+ and Bc (bacic cation) from ammonium acetate disolution (comparing with WRB approaches) was the basis. Modification of sum of exchangeable acidity (H ++Al 3+ ) from KCl disolution and Bc was a comparing method. Both results validated that NFA with dominating only one soil buffering class occurred in contrast to mainly lowland or hilly-country NFA with rich mosaic of soil buffer classes due to alternation of mesotrophic and oligotrophic MPs. The sum of H ++Al 3+ always showed that in the Czech Republic probably the most important soil buffer class is the humus level. In this level, soil ecological stability is very closely dependent on genesis of a humus substances and variable levels of soil sorption complex. Consequently, this is connected with tree species composition of forests as well as with their management. Herewith, we suggested that soil acidification risks in unexposed conditions could be probably decreased by sustainable forest management. Informace o distribuci lesních typ ů mohou být dopln ěny řadou index ů a r ůzn ě shlukovány, což umož ňuje z lesnických typologických map vytvá řet jiné eko-indika ční mapy. Nap říklad soubory lesních typ ů byly klasifikovány do p ůdních pufra čních pásem, z čehož byla získána mapa míry statické ekologické stability (MACK Ů et al. 2006). 1 POUŽITÉ ZKRATKY SLT – soubor lesních typ ů KVK – kationtová vým ěnná kapacita (mmol +/kg) (P)PP – (p ůdní) pufra ční pásmo TVK – titra ční vým ěnná kyselost (mmol +/kg) SKK – semikvantitativní klasifikace BS – bazická saturace (%) HS – hospodá řský soubor Cox – půdní uhlík (%) PLO – přírodní lesní oblast (číselná ozna čení tab. 3) K-W – Kruskal-Wallis ův test LVS – lesní vegeta ční stupe ň PUPFL – pozemky ur čené k pln ění funkcí lesa EK – edafická kategorie LHPO – lesní hospodá řské plány/osnovy ANOVA – analýza rozptylu SK – sorp ční komplex SCLU – shluková analýza jednoduchým spojením PLO-LVS – regionální lesní vegeta ční stupe ň PLO-EK – regionální edafická kategorie PLO-HS – regionální hospodá řský soubor J – edafická kategorie su ťová F – edafická kategorie svahová K – edafická kategorie normální B – edafická kategorie bohatá N – edafická kategorie kamenitá L – edafická kategorie lužní I – edafická kategorie uléhavá P – edafická kategorie oglejená kyselá S – edafická kategorie sv ěží G – edafická kategorie glejová HS01 – mimo řádn ě nep říznivá stanovišt ě HS35 – živná bazická stanovišt ě st ředních poloh HS02 – vysokohorské lesy pod hranicí stromové HS43 – kyselá stanovišt ě st ředních poloh vegetace HS45 – živná stanovišt ě st ředních poloh HS03 – lesy v kle čovém vegeta čním stupni HS51 – exponovaná stanovišt ě vyšších poloh HS19 – lužní stanovišt ě HS53 – kyselá stanovišt ě vyšších poloh HS23 – kyselá stanovišt ě nižších poloh HS55 – živná stanovišt ě vyšších poloh HS25 – živná stanovišt ě nižších poloh HS73 – kyselá stanovišt ě horských poloh HS29 – olšová stanovišt ě na podmá čených p ůdách HS75 – živná stanovišt ě horských poloh HS31 – vysýchavá a sušší acerózní a bazická stanovišt ě st ředních poloh MATERIÁL A METODY Pracovní hypotéza Soubory lesních typ ů (SLT) a z nich odvozené hospodá řské soubory (HS) p ředstavují základní prostorové jednotky pro funk čně diferencované p ěstování les ů na biogeografickém základ ě. PLO byly vybrány nejen z hercynských celk ů, ale i z oblasti karpatské, biogeograficky p řechodné a nivní. Regionáln ě- geologicky byl výb ěr zam ěř en na oblasti krystalických elevací, pískovcové

Checklist of the Spheciform Wasps (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae & Sphecidae) of British Columbia Chris Ratzlaff Spencer Entomological Collection, Beaty Biodiversity Museum, UBC, Vancouver, BC This checklist is a modified version of: Ratzlaff, C.R. 2015. Checklist of the spheciform wasps (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae & Sphecidae) of British Columbia. Journal of the Entomological Society of British Columbia 112:19-46 (available at http://journal.entsocbc.ca/index.php/journal/article/view/894/951). Photographs for almost all species are online in the Spencer Entomological Collection gallery (http://www.biodiversity.ubc.ca/entomology/). There are nine subfamilies of spheciform wasps in recorded from British Columbia, represented by 64 genera and 280 species. The majority of these are Crabronidae, with 241 species in 55 genera and five subfamilies. Sphecidae is represented by four subfamilies, with 39 species in nine genera. The following descriptions are general summaries for each of the subfamilies and include nesting habits and provisioning information. The Subfamilies of Crabronidae Astatinae !Three genera and 16 species of astatine wasps are found in British Columbia. All species of Astata, Diploplectron, and Dryudella are groundnesting and provision their nests with heteropterans (Bohart and Menke 1976). Males of Astata and Dryudella possess holoptic eyes and are often seen perching on sticks or rocks. Bembicinae Nineteen genera and 47 species of bembicine wasps are found in British Columbia. All species are groundnesting and most prefer habitats with sand or sandy soil, hence the common name of “sand wasps”. Four genera, Bembix, Microbembex, Steniolia and Stictiella, have been recorded nesting in aggregations (Bohart and Horning, Jr. 1971; Bohart and Gillaspy 1985).

  • Sphecidae" (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae & Crabronidae) from Sicily (Italy) and Malta
Linzer biol. Beitr. 35/2 747-762 19.12.2003 New records of "Sphecidae" (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae & Crabronidae) from Sicily (Italy) and Malta C. SCHMID-EGGER Abstract: Two large samples from Sicily and Malta are revised. They include 126 species from Sicily, 19 species of them are new for the fauna of Sicily: Astata gallica, Belomicrus italicus, Crabro peltarius bilbaoensis, Crossocerus podagricus, Gorytes procrustes, Lindenius albilabris, Lindenius laevis, Passaloecus pictus, Pemphredon austrica, Pemphredon lugubris, Rhopalum clavipes, Spilomena troglodytes, Stigmus solskyi, Synnevrus decemmaculatus, Tachysphex julliani, Trypoxylon kolazyi, Trypoxylon medium. Miscophus mavromoustakisi, found in Sicily, is also new for the fauna of Italy. A species of the genus Synnevrus is probably unknown to science. The total number of species in Sicily is 217 now. Zoogeographical aspects are discussed. Most of the recorded species are by origin from central or southern Europe. A few species have an eastern, resp. western Mediterranean distribution pattern. A species is a northern African element. Key words: Hymenoptera, Apoidea, Sphecidae, Crabronidae, Sicily, Italy, Malta, fauna, zoogeographical aspects, endemism. Introduction The fauna of Sphecidae from Sicily was never treated in a special publication. PAGLIANO (1990), in his catalogue of the Sphecidae from Italy, was the first who listed all published records of Sphecidae from Sicily. NEGRISOLO (1995) completed the listing in the ‘Checklist della specie della fauna Italiana’. He listed 186 species names, and some subspecies names from Sicily. Nevertheless, the fauna of Sicily is far from being completely known. I had the opportunity to examine two large collections from Sicily. Bernhard Merz collected in June 1999 Diptera at Sicily and Malta and took also many Aculeate with him.

On entering upon the task, however, I found that the work is not an easy matter, because their clas· sification and nomenclature are very complicated among the specialists in Europe. The main reason of the difficulty of the classification of this genus seems to lie in that the specific characters used as criteria for specific differences are rather slight and considerably variable. Such being the case, I collected as many examples as possible and examined statistically seemingly important characters. The material here dealt with consists of about 800 examples which were deriyed from the collections of the Entomological Institute of the Hokkaido Uni versity, the Entomological Laboratory of the Kyushu University, the priYate collections of 1\11"". Plenary Lectures Franz Huber Lecture UNDERSTANDING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GENES AND SOCIAL BEHAVIOR: LESSONS FROM THE HONEY BEE Gene Robinson1 University of Illinois,Urbana,USA1 The study of genes and social behavior is still a young field. In this lecture, I will discuss some of the first insights to emerge that describe the relationship between them. These include the surprisingly close relationship between brain gene expression and specific behavioral states; social regulation of brain gene expression; control of social behavior by context-dependent rewiring of brain transcriptional regulatory networks; and evolutionarily conserved genetic tool kits for social behavior that span insects, fish and mammals. Social Behavior Keywords :behavioral evolution; genomics; neural systems Plenary Lectures Walter Heiligenberg Lecture MERGING OF OUR SENSES: BUILDING BLOCKS AND CANONICAL COMPUTATIONS Dora Angelaki1; Greg Deangelis1 Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA1 A fundamental aspect of our sensory experience is that information from different modalities is often seamlessly integrated into a unified percept. Many studies have demonstrated statistically optimal cue integration, although such improvement in precision is small. Another important property of perception is accuracy. Does multisensory integration improve accuracy? We have investigated this question in the context of visual/vestibular heading perception. Humans and animals are fairly accurate in judging their direction of self-motion (i.e., heading) from optic flow when moving through a stationary environment. However, an object moving independently in the world alters the optic flow field and bias heading perception if the visual system cannot dissociate object motion from self-motion. The moving object induced significant biases in perceived heading when self-motion was signaled by either visual or vestibular cues alone.

I think it is fair to say that we’ve had an exciting year of entomological discovery within Shropshire, with the Invertebrate Challenge training courses throwing up some fabulous finds, and it has been brilliant to be able to work with so many committed and interesting people. I’m also pleased to include details of the Shropshire Entomology Weekend (in conjunction with Preston Montford Field Centre , The Shropshire Invertebrates Group, The Invertebrate Challenge, and the BENHS) with booking details. This is a great opportunity to get together with fellow entomologists in the late winter when there is little going on outside in the way of insect activity. Many thanks once more to everyone who has contributed to this edition. The deadline for submission of content for Vol. 5 is Friday 16th March 2012. Please feel free to pass this newsletter on to anyone you feel might be interested in it. Note – past newsletters are now available for download as PDF’s from www.invertebrate-challenge.org.uk/newsletters- and-resources.aspx ~ Contents ~ The stag’s lesser cousin : Simon Yates The chocolate tipula isn’t edible: Pete Boardman Solitary wasps part 2 and social wasps: Ian Cheeseborough The cranefly Molophilus niger Goetghebuer,
