I think it is fair to say that we’ve had an exciting year of entomological discovery within Shropshire, with the Invertebrate Challenge training courses throwing up some fabulous finds, and it has been brilliant to be able to work with so many committed and interesting people. I’m also pleased to include details of the Shropshire Entomology Weekend (in conjunction with Preston Montford Field Centre , The Shropshire Invertebrates Group, The Invertebrate Challenge, and the BENHS) with booking details. This is a great opportunity to get together with fellow entomologists in the late winter when there is little going on outside in the way of insect activity. Well that is not strictly true as I suppose it is, but it probably doesn’t taste very nice, unless you are a starling or have Pica syndrome. That aside, I was really chuffed to receive a specimen of this uncommon fly from Ian Cheeseborough who took it from wet grassland at Cole Mere Country Park on 26th June 2011. The fly is principally associated with wet fen and is much more common to the south and the east of the United Kingdom. In Shropshire, it has previously been recorded from Morton Pool in 1993, interestingly on 23rd June, Dorcus parellelopipedus (Simon Yates) suggesting that the flight period may be quite limited. The previous article (see Shropshire Entomology Vol. 3) stated that Shropshire had 121 species, but I had over-looked one species and we have this season added a new Chrysid, Pseudomalus violaceus (see elsewhere in this newsletter – Ed.). We tested odour traps for the monitoring of Flower chafers (Cetoniidae). These traps have been designed for eradication or monitoring the beetles in Mediterranean orchards where these beetles can be present in large numbers. Therefore, it is unclear whether these traps can be used to monitor these species in Northern Europe at sites where these species have relatively low population sizes. Odour traps for Cetonia aurata Linnaeus, 1761 and Protaetia cuprea Fabricius, 1775 were tested in five sites in Belgium and odour traps for Oxythyrea funesta Poda, 1761 and Tropinota hirta (Poda, 1761) at one site. In total 5 C. aurata , 17 Protaetia metallica (Herbst, 1782) and 2 O. funesta were captured. Furthermore, some more common Cetoniidae were found besides 909 non-Cetoniidae invertebrates. I conclude that the traps are not interesting to monitor C. aurata when the species is relatively rare. However, the traps seem to be useful to monitor P. metallica and to detect O. funesta even if it is present in low numbers. However, it is important to lower the high mortality rate of predominantly honeybee and bumblebees by adapting the trap design. Native pinewoods occur on infertile, strongly leached, podsolic soils. They do not support a large diversity of plants and animals compared with some more fertile habitats. A. cinctellus встречается на всей территории республики, а A. sericeus обнаружен только в её южной части. Виды, зарегистрированные на территории Беларуси, обитают преимущественно в открытых биотопах. Наибольшая активность выявленных видов приходится на июль. На основании изучения полученного материала и литературных источников, была составлена определительная таблица из 6 видов рода Agenioideus.     Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits.

On 21 January 2020 I shall be attending a lecture at the University of Gloucester by Adam Hart entitled “The Insect Apocalypse” the subject of which will of course be one that matters to all of us. Spreading awareness of the jeopardy that insects are now facing can only be a good thing, as is the excellent number of articles that, despite this situation, readers have submitted for inclusion in this newsletter. The editorial of Hoverfly Newsletter No. 66 covered two subjects that are followed up in the current issue. One of these was the diminishing UK participation in the international Syrphidae symposia in recent years, but I am pleased to say that Jon Heal, who attended the most recent one, has addressed this matter below. Also the publication of two new illustrated hoverfly guides, from the Netherlands and Canada, were announced. Both are reviewed by Roger Morris in this newsletter. The Dutch book has already proved its value in my local area, by providing the confirmation that we now have Xanthogramma stackelbergi in Gloucestershire (taken at Pope’s Hill in June by John Phillips).
