Others use psychological control or verbal insults (taunting, teasing, etc.) to demean and torment their targets. For example, people in popular groups or “cliques” often harass people they categorize as unusual by excluding them or spread- ing rumors about them. Bullying often goes unreported in schools, mak- ing it difficult for school officials to help when a problem arises. 34% of the students who took the survey agreed that they “…feel uncomfortable reporting bullying and harassment.” 21% even agreed to the statement that “at my school, there are no consequences for bullying.” This grave misunderstanding could cost us something very dear, our sense of community. Which seems to have been violated by these bullies and must be stopped. There are consequences at North Thurston High School to address bullying and they are explained in the “North Thurston Public Schools Student Rights and Re- sponsibilities Handbook,” the disciplinary actions against bullying are as follows: emergency removal and short- term suspension, long-term suspension/expulsion, and emergency expulsion. All consequences are dependent on the severity of the actions made by both parties involved. Earn FREE college credits while in high school!
