Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2017
Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2017 Monday 23 January - Thursday 2 February 2017 Round 3 Report: Thursday 26 January 2017 - by John Saunders (@JohnChess) How to Draw with Your Dad Nine players – Mickey Adams (England), Nikita Vitiugov, Vadim Zvjaginsev (both Russia), Sam Shankland (USA), Eduardo Iturrizaga (Venezuela), Emil Sutovsky (Israel), Maxime Lagarde (France), Kacper Piorun (Poland) and Ju Wenjun (China) – share the lead on 3/3 after another tough round of chess in the Tradewise Gibraltar Masters at the Caleta Hotel in Gibraltar. The elite 2700+ players are still finding it very hard to impose themselves on the group of players rated 200 or 300 points below. Veselin Topalov picked up this point in his master class on Wednesday, stating that these days there is little or no difference in the quality of the first 10 to 15 opening moves between 2300-rated players and the elite. So the big names have to work harder to get their points, perhaps adopting a Carlsen-style approach, avoiding long, forcing lines in the opening and outplaying their opponents in endgames. This has been exemplified in Gibraltar by the only two 2700+ rated players to figure in the group on 3/3, namely Adams and Vitiugov, who have been grinding out the wins in long games. Mickey Adams ground out a long win against Bogdan-Daniel Deac (Romania) Perhaps the most enjoyable game for the audience in round three was the battle between Peter Svidler and Nitzan Steinberg. The 18-year-old IM from Israel has made quite an impression in Gibraltar, drawing with the second seed Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and now the sixth seed. -

Like the two previous books, Boris and I would debate the games over Skype. I would record the conversations and continue to analyse the games on my own, to see if I found any additional details. I would then return the games to Boris, fully annotated, and he would make further corrections. We then showed many of the examples to our students, who came up with many interesting suggestions. This is the case even more so with Decision Making in Major Piece Endings, which is published simultaneously with this volume. We would like to thank our students for their contributions. The authors would also like to thank Alexander Huzman for his great contribution and discoveries. Throughout the book, including in the index, you will find him referred to either as Huzman or simply as Alex – he deserves to be mentioned twice! Alex distinctly unimpressed – St Petersburg 2018 6 Boris Gelfand – Technical Decision Making in Chess This book also includes a small collection of photos. -

Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2017
Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2017 Monday 23 January - Thursday 2 February 2017 Round 2 Report: Wednesday 25 January 2017 - by John Saunders (@JohnChess) Bad Day at Black Rock Last year's winner Hikaru Nakamura, Mickey Adams, Yu Yangyi, Nikita Vitiugov and Arkadij Naiditsch are now the sole possessors of a 100% score to go with a 2700+ rating at the end of the second round of play at the Tradewise Gibraltar Masters on Tuesday as their elite colleagues struggled to do better than draw, and in one calamitous case, to lose against more modest opposition. In total 37 players are still on 2/2. I couldn't resist borrowing the title of the old Spencer Tracy for today's second round of the Tradewise Gibraltar Masters as it seems so apt, both on the board and off. The day started normally enough, as I enjoyed a delicious breakfast in the Caleta Hotel and then went for my daily constitutional in bright sunshine along the road to the south of the venue, which I have now dubbed 'Grandmaster Promenade'. Whilst walking down the road, idly peering at the flora and fauna of Gibraltar with my binoculars, Natalia Zhukova said 'hi' whilst jogging, Boris Gelfand stopped to chat, and Hou Yifan and her mother passed by. You meet a better class of chess player along Grandmaster Promenade. Around 10am I returned to the hotel and noticed that it seemed less well lit than usual. Indeed, the stairwells were positively Stygian, and I had to feel my way with my foot to find the steps in the unaccustomed gloom.
