Stand by me... news.fitzrovia.org.uk Fitzrovia News Fitzrovia News is produced by residents and volunteers and distributed free to business and residential addresses in Fitzrovia Issue 157 Summer 2020 Tributes paid to Mike Pentelow, editor of Fitzrovia News page 5 Who’s By Linus Rees and Pete Whyatt the talent on Fitzrovia News has been overwhelmed with the number of tributes paid to Mike Pen - telow, editor-in-chief of the newspaper, who died suddenly at his home on Nassau Street Nassau Street? on 1 April aged 73. He had suffered a short illness which included Covid-19 on the post- mortem report. Mike was a journalist all his working life and over the past 20 years he authored books about history, pubs, and a walking guide. He played a large part in the life of Fitzrovia since moving to Nassau Street in 1970 at the start of a decade where the residential community was beginning to assert itself: fight - ing for housing, preserving its heritage, and creating new public open spaces, and popu - larising the name Fitzrovia. A chronicler of Fitzrovia life past and present, he also helped shape its future. He con - tributed articles to Tower community newspaper, forerunner of Fitzrovia News, helped to organise the first Fitzrovia Festival, took part in setting up the Fitzrovia Neighbourhood Association, and eventually editing this newspaper. He loved the neighbourhood’s pubs and restaurants and led guided walks revealing the secrets behind the doors and windows of its quiet back streets which he’d gleaned NNHHSS from hours of research sat in London’s libraries. In recognition of his life and achievements, obituaries have been published in the three New Journal local papers serving Camden, Westminster and Islington, The Morning ppoorrttrraaiittss Star, The Guardian, and The Journalist, the magazine of the National Union of Journalists. In a special edition of Fitzrovia News we publish several pages about Mike’s life, as well as tributes from friends, and feelings of loss from the many people who were close to him. Reviewed by James Heartfield (Freelance, UK) The Literary London Journal, Volume 12 Number 1–2 (Spring/Autumn 2015) Bloomsbury and Soho in the nineteenth century were places where political refugees lived, though the Germans preferred Bloomsbury, just to the north, on the grounds that the Parisians of Soho were all drunks and womanisers. Phil Cohen is a long-standing activist and now academic, who has written his memoir of radical Bloomsbury, while writer and club manager Sophie Parkin’s history of drinking clubs takes Soho as its epicentre, and in particular the Colony Club on Dean Street. Phil Cohen was sent to St Paul’s School and later Oxford, but his attention was taken up by the London of Somerstown and Bloomsbury. As a youth worker, he wandered through the radical 1960s, being involved in various movements of the Fluxus and Situationist art scene that he met in bookshops like Better Books, India, and later Gay’s the Word, and working for a while as an assistant to the surrealist John Latham. He participated in the radical psychoanalytic movement led by R. D. Laing, paying for his treatment with more youth work, and then took part in the Dialectic of Liberation conference with Black Power’s Stokely Carmichael, New Leftist Herbert Marcuse and Beat poet Allen Ginsberg at the Roundhouse in 1967.

How to calcu - Llate a figure with any form of accuracy when it traces back forty years to my early teens? Can’t I make a stab in the dark, perhaps like Simenon when he pur - ported to have had sex with ten thousand women since the age of thirteen and a half in his “need to communicate”? A figure later reduced to around one thousand two hundred by his second wife. Whatever the number, this dynamic road plays a major part in my life, a spine to my life, as it is to Central London. Or, alternatively, the aorta, the main artery of the body. What image to find to equate its importance in my life? Its vitalness. My life would have been very different if this street hadn’t been there to support and launch me in directions, like ribs from the spine, or vital organs within its sphere. Walking up the Charing Cross Road, to the left are connections to Leicester Square, Chinatown, Soho, Oxford Street. Walking up, to the right, connections to Covent Garden, Holborn, Bloomsbury. Walking up . That word suggests the bottom is at the Trafalgar Square end. But that is only because I come into the great metropolis from the south, arrive at Char - ing Cross station, the closest station of all the main ones to the centre of London. Thus I begin my walk from the bottom as I know it, behind the north side of Trafal - gar Square, behind the National Gallery.

AUTHOR: Kirsten Feldner, B.A. (McMaster University) SUPERVISOR: Doctor Catherine Annette Grisé NUMBER OF PAGES: ix, 107. ii Lay Abstract This thesis pairs an analysis of meeting minutes, newspaper articles, song-sheets, and theatrical programmes from London’s Victorian music halls with contemporary music hall scholarship and studies of censorship to add to the discussion of the genre’s “end” or “death.” Using the work of Judith Butler, this thesis is divided into a study of how censorship transformed the music hall’s landscape, content, and culminating performance from its onset. As a result, this thesis argues that the controlling factors which shaped the genre led to what other music hall scholars have considered its end. By identifying the styles and modes of censorship used in the evolution of the English music hall genre, and in in-period methods of resistance to social control, this project suggests the radical potential of the music hall form as a contemporary style of theatre.
