NATURAL MONUMENTS: RETHINKING ARBOREAL HERITAGE FOR TWENTY-FIRST-CENTURY AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND Susette Goldsmith A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2018 ABSTRACT The twenty-first century is imposing significant challenges on nature in general with the arrival of climate change, and on arboreal heritage in particular through pressures for building expansion. This thesis examines the notion of tree heritage in Aotearoa New Zealand at this current point in time and questions what it is, how it comes about, and what values, meanings and understandings and human and non-human forces are at its heart. While the acknowledgement of arboreal heritage can be regarded as the duty of all New Zealanders, its maintenance and protection are most often perceived to be the responsibility of local authorities and heritage practitioners. This study questions the validity of the evaluation methods currently employed in the tree heritage listing process, tree listing itself, and the efficacy of tree protection provisions. The thesis presents a multiple case study of discrete sites of arboreal heritage that are all associated with a single native tree species—karaka (Corynocarpus laevigatus). The focus of the case studies is not on the trees themselves, however, but on the ways in which the tree sites fill the heritage roles required of them entailing an examination of the complicated networks of trees, people, events, organisations, policies and politics situated within the case studies, and within arboreal heritage itself. Accordingly, the thesis adopts a critical theoretical perspective, informed by various interpretations of Actor Network Theory and Assemblage Theory, and takes a ‘counter-’approach to the authorised heritage discourse introducing a new notion of an ‘unauthorised arboreal heritage discourse’. -

genealogy Article A Tale of Two Stories: Unsettling a Settler Family’s History in Aotearoa New Zealand Richard Shaw Politics Programme, Massey University, PB 11 222 Palmerston North, New Zealand; [email protected]; Tel.: +64-27609-8603 Abstract: On the morning of the 5 November 1881, my great-grandfather stood alongside 1588 other military men, waiting to commence the invasion of Parihaka pa,¯ home to the great pacifist leaders Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi¯ and their people. Having contributed to the military campaign against the pa,¯ he returned some years later as part of the agricultural campaign to complete the alienation of Taranaki iwi from their land in Aotearoa New Zealand. None of this detail appears in any of the stories I was raised with. I grew up Pakeh¯ a¯ (i.e., a descendant of people who came to Aotearoa from Europe as part of the process of colonisation) and so my stories tend to conform to orthodox settler narratives of ‘success, inevitability, and rights of belonging’. This article is an attempt to right that wrong. In it, I draw on insights from the critical family history literature to explain the nature, purposes and effects of the (non)narration of my great-grandfather’s participation in the military invasion of Parihaka in late 1881. On the basis of a more historically comprehensive and contextualised account of the acquisition of three family farms, I also explore how the control of land taken from others underpinned the creation of new settler subjectivities and created various forms of privilege that have flowed down through the generations. -

10. South Taranaki Fighting in South Taranaki began when General Cameron’s invasion army marched north from Whanganui on 24 January 1865. This was a major New Zealand campaign, exceeded in the number of Pākehā troops only by the Waikato War a year earlier. A chain of redoubts protected communications, notably on each bank of the Waitotara, Patea, Manawapou and Waingongoro rivers. Pā were mostly inland, at or near the bush edge, and were left alone. The invasion halted at Waingongoro River on the last day of March 1865. British troops then stayed on at the redoubts, while colonial forces took Māori land in return for service, with local fortifications put up for refuge and defence. On 30 December 1865, General Chute marched north from Whanganui on a very different campaign. By the time his combined British Army, colonial and Whanganui Māori force returned on 9 February 1866, seven fortified pā and 21 kāinga had been attacked and taken in search and destroy operations. When British regiments left South Taranaki later that year, colonial troops took over the garrison role. Titokowaru’s 1868–69 campaign was an outstanding strategic episode of the New Zealand Wars. Colonial troops were defeated at Te Ngutu o te Manu and Moturoa and forced back to Whanganui, abandoning Pākehā settlement north of Kai Iwi but for posts at Patea and Wairoa (Waverley). The Māori effort failed early in 1869 when Tauranga Ika, the greatest of Titokowaru’s pā, was given up without a fight. In the years that followed, Pākehā settlers on Māori land were protected by Armed Constabulary and militia posts. -

1 2: Immigration during the Crown Colony period, 1840-1852 Context In 1840 New Zealand became, formally, a part of the British Empire. The small and irregular inflow of British immigrants from the Australian Colonies – the ‘Old New Zealanders’ of the mission stations, whaling stations, timber depots, trader settlements, and small pastoral and agricultural outposts, mostly scattered along the coasts - abruptly gave way to the first of a number of waves of immigrants which flowed in from 1840.1 At least three streams arrived during the period 1840-1852, although ‘Old New Zealanders’ continued to arrive in small numbers during the 1840s. The first consisted of the government officials, merchants, pastoralists, and other independent arrivals, the second of the ‘colonists’ (or land purchasers) and the ‘emigrants’ (or assisted arrivals) of the New Zealand Company and its affiliates, and the third of the imperial soldiers (and some sailors) who began arriving in 1845. New Zealand’s European population grew rapidly, marked by the establishment of urban communities, the colonial capital of Auckland (1840), and the Company settlements of Wellington (1840), Petre (Wanganui, 1840), New Plymouth (1841), Nelson (1842), Otago (1848), and Canterbury (1850). Into Auckland flowed most of the independent and military streams, and into the company settlements those arriving directly from the United Kingdom. Thus A.S.Thomson observed that ‘The northern [Auckland] settlers were chiefly derived from Australia; those in the south from Great Britain. The former,’ he added, ‘were distinguished for colonial wisdom; the latter for education and good home connections …’2 Annexation occurred at a time when emigration from the United Kingdom was rising. -

LIKE HIS father, Edward Gibbon Wakefield, Jerningham Wakefield had energy, ambition, the ability to mesmerise, and a fluent pen. With his father, he immersed himself in the politics of colonisation and of colonies them- selves, but to even less personal advancement. For Jerningham Wakefield managed his money, thirst and sexual energy imprudently enough to thwart his more public ambitions. He achieved little but a modest share in the life-work of another man: his father. Yet our historical sources would be the poorer without his lively Adven- ture in New Zealand, first published in 1845, soon after his return to Eng- land. That personal story is unexpectedly continued in a journal recently discovered, lodged in the Alexander Turnbull Library, and now published for the first time. The Journal, written mainly in London in 1845 and 1846, is compressed, often cryptic, and comparatively short. Its contents will re- quire few historians to revise their conclusions about either the Wakefields or the politics of colonisation. Nevertheless it contains considerable circum- stantial detail of a particular stage in the evolution of the Otago and Can- terbury schemes of settlement, and also a few interesting scraps of informa- tion about the New Zealand Company's dealings with the Whig and Tory politicians of the day. The change of government in 1846 brought hope to most protagonists of colonisation, but immediate disappointment to the Wakefields. -

In addition to historical research, I also provide treaty policy advice to government departments. I graduated from Otago University with a BA in 1989 and a Postgraduate Diploma in New Zealand History in 1990. Email: [email protected] Paper presented at the British Educational Research Association Annual Conference, University of Manchester, 2-5 September 2009 Henri Lefebvre suggested that social researchers engage in „the concrete analysis of rhythms‟ in order to reveal the „pedagogy of appropriation (the appropriation of the body, as of spatial practice)‟. Lefebvre‟s spatial analysis has influenced educational researchers, while the idea of „pedagogy‟ has travelled beyond education. This interdisciplinary paper combines Lefebvre‟s analytical trilogy of perceived, conceived and lived spaces with Bernstein‟s „pedagogical device‟ in an interrogation of historical documents. It engages in a „rhythm analysis‟ of the New Zealand Company‟s „pedagogical appropriation‟ of a group of agricultural labourers into its „systematic colonisation scheme‟. The temporal-spatial rhythms of the labourers‟ lives are accessible in nine surviving letters they wrote in Wellington and sent to Surrey between 1841-1844. By revealing how their bodies were „traversed by rhythms rather as the „ether‟ is traversed by waves,‟ we understand how bodies, social space and the self are mutually constitutive and constituted. Keywords: history; Lefebvre; letters/literacy; colonisation Education‟s fragmented fields of inquiry retain some coherence in their common orientation around the „pedagogical.‟ As borders between human sciences became increasingly porous, the idea of „the pedagogical‟ flowed beyond education into disciplines such as geography.
