POULOS Laboratory of Physical Geography, Section of Geography & Climatology, Department of Geology & Geoenvironment, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, Panepistimioupolis-Zografou, 10584, Attiki Corresponding author: [email protected] Handling Editor: Argyro ZENETOS Received: 22 January 2019; Accepted: 6 July 2019; Published on line: 5 September 2019 Abstract A quantitative assessment of the riverine freshwater, suspended and dissolved sediment loads is provided for the watersheds of the four primary (Western Mediterranean-WMED, Central Mediterranean-CMED, Eastern Mediterranean-EMED and Black Sea- BLS) and eleven secondary marine regions of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Earth System (MBES). On the basis of measured values that cover spatially >65% and >84% of MED and BLS watersheds, respectively, water discharge of the MBES reaches annually almost the 1 million km3, with Mediterranean Sea (including the Marmara Sea) providing 576 km3 and the Black Sea (included the Azov Sea) 418 km3. Among the watersheds of MED primary marine regions, the total water load is distributed as follows: WMED= 180 km3; CMED= 209 km3; and EMED= 187 km3. The MBES could potentially provide annually some 894 106 t of suspended sediment load (SSL), prior to river damming, most of which (i.e., 708 106 t is attributed to MED). -

Reducing Transboundary Degradation in the Kura-Aras Basin
UNDP Project Document Governments of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia United Nations Development Programme United Nations Office for Project Services Reducing Transboundary Degradation in the Kura-Aras Basin The Project will assist the Kura-Aras riparian states to 1) identify the principal threats and root causes of the trans-boundary water resources of the Kura Aras-River Transboundary Basin and 2) develop and implement a sustainable programme of policy, legal and institutional reforms and investments to address these threats. Balancing overuse and conflicting uses of water resources in transboundary surface and groundwater basins is seen as the critical issue in the basin and will be a principal focus of project attention from the very outset of project related activities. The Project will create synergies with and build upon a range of initiatives being undertaken by the countries themselves and those of bi-lateral and multi- lateral donors that have given priority to the Basin. The long-term development/environmental goal of the project is sustainable development of the Kura-Aras River Basin enhanced through ecosystem-based Integrated Water Resource Management approaches. The project objective is to improve the management of the Kura-Aras River Transboundary Basin through the implementation of a sustainable programme of policy, legal and institutional reforms and investment options using the Trans-boundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) and Strategic Action Programme (SAP) process. In order to achieve this objective, the project will update the TDA, support National IWRM plans which will be the base of the SAP, undertake a range of public involvement and awareness activities focusing on trans-boundary activities, and undertake demonstration projects that implement key aspects of the SAP. -

The 16 first data on glaciers can be found in the works of great Georgian scientist Vakhushti 17 Bagrationi. After almost hundred years the foreign scientists began to describe the 18 glaciers of Georgia. Information about the glaciers of Georgia can be found in the 19 works of W. Abich, D. Freshfield, G. Radde, N. Dinik, I. Rashevskiy, A. Reinhardt etc. The 20 first statistical information about the glaciers of Georgia are found in the catalog of the 21 Caucasus glaciers compiled by K. Podozerskiy in 1911. Then, in 1960s the large-scale 22 (1 : 25 000, 1 : 50 000) topographic maps were published, which were compiled in 23 1955–1960 on the basis of the airphotos. On the basis of the mentioned maps R. 24 Gobejishvili gave quite detailed statistical information about the glaciers of Georgia. Then 25 in 1975 the results of glaciers inventory of the former USSR was published, where the 26 statistical information about the glaciers of Georgia was obtained on the basis of the 27 almost same time (1955-1957) aerial images. -

Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Tbilisi, Georgia Abstract The segment of Caucasus Black Sea coast, which is geographically considered as a united geosystem placed in the areal of the segments of Greater and Lesser Caucasus, is one of the densely populated and utilized regions of our Planet, herewith, it is extremely complicated geoecologically and in very crisis situation. In this regard particularly special situation is created in view of development of elemental geological processes of large scale and frequency of its recurrence, which obtained particular character since the end of 20th century. Damaged area makes about 60% and the high risk zone – about 45%. Special geoecological situation created in the Caucasus Black Sea coast needs particular nature use regime, complex approach of its target utilization and integrated management of geological environment, which foresees the identification of risks of geoecological hazards stipulated by natural and anthropogenic impact, elaboration of criteria of gaudiness of geological environment and working out of regional scheme of minimization of risk -

This Law shall not apply to: a) the cases specified in Article 101(3)(e) of the Law of Georgia on Public Procurement; b) the transfer or any other administration of useful parts and materials obtained after the reconstruction, repair, dismantling or demolition of state- owned buildings transferred for use to state bodies of Georgia, to the bodies of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, of the Autonomous Republic of Ajara or to local self-government bodies or to legal entities under public law for the purpose of covering, in full or in part, the costs of reconstruction, repair, dismantling or demolition of these buildings by such body or legal entity under public law; c) the transfer or any other administration of the useful parts and materials obtained as a result of the reconstruction, repair, dismantling or demolition of buildings transferred for use to the state bodies of Georgia, to the bodies of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, or to the Autonomous Republic of Ajara or to local self-government bodies or to legal entities under public law, shall be effected by such body or legal entity under public law for the purpose of covering, in full or in part, the costs of reconstruction, repair, dismantling or demolition of the buildings in accordance with the procedures and -

Phasis 21-22, 2019 PHASIAN CONFUSION. NOTES ON KOLCHIAN, ARMENIAN AND PONTIC RIVER NAMES IN MYTH, HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY* ALTAY COŞKUN Abstract. Due to its close link with the legendary kingdom of Aia, where the Argonauts found the Golden Fleece, the Kolchian Phasis is one of the most illustrious rivers in world literature. It is, at the same time, surrounded by several controversies, ancient as well as modern. The evidence seems to suggest that it was first pictured as part of the mythical landscape around 500 B.C. Mythical narratives, colonial ideologies, reports of explorers and geographical speculation led to a heterogeneous, in part fancy tradition, as is best exemplified by the Phasis/Tanaïs/Don, which was fathomed with a second outlet into the Baltic Sea. This notwithstanding, the concept of the Kolchian Phasis was quite sober. Eratosthenes, Strabo and the mainstream literary tradition identified it with the modern Rioni only as far as Rhodo- polis/Geguti, whence its middle course equals the Kvirila River to Sarapa- * I am grateful to Jean Coert (Bremen) and Anca Dan (Paris) as well as the two anonymous reviewers for their helpful feedback, and to Stone Chen for produc- ing the maps with me.
