Until very recently, scholars have ignored nosatsu because of its associations with superstition and low-class, uneducated ho.bbyists. Recently, however, a new interest in nosatsu has revived because of its connections to ukiyo-e. Early in its history, nosatsu was regarded as a means of showing devotion toward the bodhisattva.Kannon. However, during the Edo period, producing artistic nosatsu was emphasized. more than religious devotion. There was a revival of interest in nosatsu during the Meiji and Taisho periods, and its current popularity suggests a national Japanese nostalgia toward traditional Japan. Using the religious, anthropological, and art historical perspectives, this theses will examine nosatsu and the practices associated with it, discuss reasons for the changes from period to pe~iod, and explore the heritage and the changing values of the Japanese common people. Enmoku (Programm) Yamata-No-Orochi (Story Against
Enmoku (programm) There are more than 60 different stories, episodes or repertoire called Enmoku, each lasting 30 to 60 minutes, but it's adjustable. Most stories come from ancient myths called the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters, 712AD) and the Nihonshoki (Chronicles of Japan, 720AD) written in the eighth century. Yamata-no-Orochi (Story against giant evil serpent) 大蛇 30 - 40min. Ancient time in Izumo, an old couple was living. They had 8 daughters but lost 7 of them already because of giant serpents. This old couple was sad because they have to sacrifice thier last daughter this year. The hero "Susa " heart this story from them and decide to save her. Susa found where serpents are, made them drank with Sake, and while they were sleeping, he got rid of them with a sword. (This sword is one of 3 ancient national treasure), and married to this rescued daughter. Jinrin (a story based on the battle in 198) 塵輪 20 - 30min. The battle between the Chuai Tenno (14th emperor in Japan they say) and the powerful demonic king, Jinrin. Jinrin had the ability to fly anywhere in Japan with wings. He and his troops attacked people to death. Chuai decided to defeat Jinrin. Yumi Hachiman (a story based on another battle) 弓八幡 20 - 30min. The battle between the Oujin Tenno (15th emperor in Japan they say) and the another evil foreign king. (Hachiman is enshrined at Usa-Hachiman shrine in Kyushu, had a power to allow to build Todaiji temple in Nara, worshiped by many Shoguns and Samurais throughout history. -

In fiction, they have historically played a significant role. Fictions of science continue to exert power via important multimedia platforms for considerations of the role of science and technology in our world. And, because of their importance for the development, ideologies and policies of any nation, these considerations can be correlated with the deliberation of the role of a nation in the world, including its internal and external images and imaginings. -

Tourists in Paradise Writing the Pure Land in Medieval Japanese Fiction

Keller Kimbrough Tourists in Paradise Writing the Pure Land in Medieval Japanese Fiction Late-medieval Japanese fiction contains numerous accounts of lay and monastic travelers to the Pure Land and other extra-human realms. In many cases, the “tourists” are granted guided tours, after which they are returned to the mun- dane world in order to tell of their unusual experiences. This article explores several of these stories from around the sixteenth century, including, most prominently, Fuji no hitoana sōshi, Tengu no dairi, and a section of Seiganji engi. I discuss the plots and conventions of these and other narratives, most of which appear to be based upon earlier oral tales employed in preaching and fund-raising, in order to illuminate their implications for our understanding of Pure Land-oriented Buddhism in late-medieval Japan. I also seek to demon- strate the diversity and subjectivity of Pure Land religious experience, and the sometimes startling gap between orthodox doctrinal and popular vernacular representations of Pure Land practices and beliefs. keywords: otogizōshi – jisha engi – shaji engi – Fuji no hitoana sōshi – Bishamon no honji – Tengu no dairi – Seiganji engi – hell – travel R. Keller Kimbrough is an assistant professor of Japanese Literature at the University of Colorado at Boulder. 269 ccording to an anonymous work of fifteenth- or early sixteenth- century Japanese fiction by the name of Chōhōji yomigaeri no sōshi 長宝 寺よみがへりの草紙 [Back from the dead at Chōhōji Temple], the Japa- Anese Buddhist nun Keishin dropped dead on the sixth day of the sixth month of Eikyō 11 (1439), made her way to the court of King Enma, ruler of the under- world, and there received the King’s personal religious instruction and a trau- matic tour of hell. -

Andrei This dissertation examines the historical and artistic circumstances behind the emergence in late medieval Japan of a short-lived genre of painting referred to as sankei mandara (pilgrimage mandalas). The paintings are large-scale topographical depictions of sacred sites and served as promotional material for temples and shrines in need of financial support to encourage pilgrimage, offering travelers worldly and spiritual benefits while inspiring them to donate liberally. Itinerant monks and nuns used the mandara in recitation performances (etoki) to lead audiences on virtual pilgrimages, decoding the pictorial clues and touting the benefits of the site shown. Addressing themselves to the newly risen commoner class following the collapse of the aristocratic order, sankei mandara depict commoners in the role of patron and pilgrim, the first instance of them being portrayed this way, alongside warriors and aristocrats as they make their way to the sites, enjoying the local delights, and worship on the sacred grounds. Together with the novel subject material, a new artistic language was created— schematic, colorful and bold. We begin by locating sankei mandara’s artistic roots and influences and then proceed to investigate the individual mandara devoted to three sacred sites: Mt. Fuji, Kiyomizudera and Ise Shrine (a sacred mountain, temple and shrine, respectively). -

E-mail: [email protected] Received December 10, 2018; Accepted November 24, 2019 Abstract This article explores how the sense of territoriality and various background conditions of Japanese rural communities affect the emergence of folk boundaries, which are viewed here as the contours of residents’ cognitive territory represented by religion-based symbolic markers. Specifically, I look at how the particular social-geograph- ical conditions of different communities create diverse conceptions of such boundaries, including the presence or absence of the boundaries, within the same region. Here, I focus on three Japanese villages encompassing seven local religious communities of Shinto-Buddhists, Catholics, and former Hidden Christians on Hirado Island in Kyushu. These villages are viewed respectively as examples of contrastive coexistence, degeneration, and expansion in territoriality. Among the seven religious communities, only those believing in Shinto-Buddhism, as well as Hid- den Christianity, have maintained their folk boundaries. These communities satisfy the conditions of an agglomer- ated settlement form, a size generally larger than ten households, a location isolated from other communities within the village, and strong social integration. In contrast, Catholics have not constructed such boundaries based on their historical process of settlement. However, they have influenced the forms of Shinto-Buddhists’ territoriality, although not those of Hidden Christians. -

SHINTO SYMBOLS (Continued from Vol. VII, No.1) VI. SACRED VESSELS AND EQUIPMENT A great many articles are employed jn conducting Shinto rituals and worship. These are called ;~iif[b~ts~ ( sacred vessels) and are tokens of the kami, abodes of kami (kami-no-yorishiro), or decorations. They are almost all inseparable from Shinto. The articles employed in rituals are sanctified and treated as symbolic, or representative of Shinto. The term seikibutsu (sacred vessel) includes all the Shinto equipment and articles used in Shinto ceremonies. It is impos sible in this brief study to do more than to touch a few of the most significant ones. The order in which they are dis cussed is as follows: himorogi, tamagushi, gohei, onusa, shime nawa, goshiki-no-hata, shimp'll, the mirror, sword and jewels, kamidana, and mikoshi. Himorogi ( divine enclosure) generally consists of a gohei or a branch of the sakaki tree hung with strips of paper or hemp and set upon a table covered with a clean straw mat. Sometimes it is a fenced-in sakaki tree or some other specific kind of evergreen tree, hung with strips of paper, hemp, or possibly a mirror. Original Himorogi - 89- l Shinto Symbols The origin of himorogi has been the subject of much con troversy, but it is agreed that from earliest times it was a part of the ceremonial equipment. It is thought that himorogi may have originally signified: 1) a place1 enclosed by evergreen trees for invoking the kami; 2) sacred trees in a grove in which kami dwelt, 3) trees which protected the kami; 4) a sacred fence made of cypress for use III rituals.2 However, the following is the most Himorogi widely accepted theory. -

As amulets, these objects are meant to be carried by a person at all times in which they wish to receive the benefits that an omamori is said to offer. In modern times, in addition to being a religious object, these amulets have become accessories for cell-phones, bags, purses, and automobiles.
