Southland Athletics News SOUTHLAND ATHLETICS NEWS No 669, Feb 7th, 2017 Clubs, please print this and pass on to your members or send their email address to [email protected] so more in our sport can be added to the circulation list Lindsay"Ginger" Redman 3.10.1931 to 30.1.2017. Gore Athletic club lost one on its Life Members last week. Ginger aged 85, was a LIfe Member of the Gore Club and had received a Long Service award from the Southland Centre for Athletics. He was heavily involved in athletics during the 1970s-80s while daughter Pam Flaus (nee Redman) competed as a coach and committee member of the Gore club. He was always seen with a stop watch in his hand on the finish line at Surrey Park on Saturdays at competitions. He continued to have an interest in the Gore club into the early 2000s. (This is a heap of important information in this issue – make sure you are up with requirements by noting details from page 4 on) Records and Success for Southland Athletes from All Over! It was a bit of here, there and everywhere for Southland athletes over the week, with Southland and New Zealand records included. 1. Surrey Park Friday evening. With more than a dozen Southlanders intent on competing at the New Zealand Combined Event Champs in Dunedin in two weeks the modified CE competition of quadrathon and pentathlon was an ideal sharpener, although the blustery weather didn’t help much. Anna Skerret continued her good form from recent Colgates with an impressive total for four events that included an excellent shot put while Tim Baker’s total from five events was outstanding. The associated other events had Jack Welsh giving the Southland M19 discus record a fright. His 46.61 throw with the 1.75 kg implement was just 18cm short of Marshall Hall’s record (see later). His coach Chris Knight says the 19 year old has a good chance of achieving the mark and will have another crack at this weekend’s combined junior and senior meet. Jessica Senior showed hwr talents are not just with the javelin, throwing a PB in the discus and cracking the 35m barrier for the first time. Emma Wilson also was in PB mode throwing 35m in the hammer for the first time since moving up from the 3 to 4kg. Many of the athletes felt a little flat, as result of many having their first week back at school and getting used to a different routine again after the long holidays, Chris observed. Even so, a dozen performances made the standard to get on the national rankings. Marshall Hall, Auckland, Feb 1st Southland Record, Marshall, holder of seven national senior discus titles, upped his own Southland record last week at Auckland with a throw of 60.77m, his first time over 60m. This puts him up in very heady company, placing the Invercargill club representative fourth on the New Zealand all-time list behind Ian Winchester, Robin Tait and Les Mills. 3. Jack Beaumont Dominates Roys Peak Sky Run, Wanaka, Saturday. The Roys Peak Sky Run is 16km of grinding uphill and precarious downhill – 8km of each. Jack was using the race as part of his build up towards the N.Z. Mountain Running Champs and hopefully, selection to the world champs in Italy. The N.Z. and world champs are up and down races (up and down alternates with straight up at championships, year by year) and Jack’s downhill running is not his forte. However at Wanaka he got to the top with around a three minute lead then showed he has some downhill ability to extend it to 8 minutes at the finish. His time for the 16km was 1:24.25 4. Greer Alsop, TJ meet record, USA. Greer won the triple jump at the Cougar Indoor Invitational at her university’s Pullman stadium, jumping 12.66, her best for the season and demolishing the meet record of 12.49 set back in 2006. 3 5. Now, the best of the week – three NZ masters records and a Sth record at Dunedin, Saturday Fiordland masters dominated! At the Otago centre meet Fiordland’s Gail Kirkman smashed two N.Z. Masters records and Tracy Excell added another while Dyani Shepherd Oates upped a Southland hammer record. Gail ran 2:46.39 to set a new W65 800m record.
