  • The Origins of the Magical Girl Genre Note: This First Chapter Is an Almost
The origins of the magical girl genre Note: this first chapter is an almost verbatim copy of the excellent introduction from the BESM: Sailor Moon Role-Playing Game and Resource Book by Mark C. MacKinnon et al. I took the liberty of changing a few names according to official translations and contemporary transliterations. It focuses on the traditional magical girls “for girls”, and ignores very very early works like Go Nagai's Cutie Honey, which essentially created a market more oriented towards the male audience; we shall deal with such things in the next chapter. Once upon a time, an American live-action sitcom called Bewitched, came to the Land of the Rising Sun... The magical girl genre has a rather long and important history in Japan. The magical girls of manga and Japanese animation (or anime) are a rather unique group of characters. They defy easy classification, and yet contain elements from many of the best loved fairy tales and children's stories throughout the world. Many countries have imported these stories for their children to enjoy (most notably France, Italy and Spain) but the traditional format of this particular genre of manga and anime still remains mostly unknown to much of the English-speaking world. The very first magical girl seen on television was created about fifty years ago. Mahoutsukai Sally (or “Sally the Witch”) began airing on Japanese television in 1966, in black and white. The first season of the show proved to be so popular that it was renewed for a second year, moving into the era of color television in 1967.

  • Sparrow Records Discography
Sparrow Discography by Mike Callahan, David Edwards & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Sparrow Records Discography Sparrow is a Contemporary Christian label founded in 1976 by Billy Ray Hearn. Hearn was the A&R Director for Word Records’ Myrrh label, founded a few years earlier also as a Contemporary Christian label. Sparrow also released records under their Birdwing subsidiary. Hearn’s Sparrow label was in competition with Hearn’s old boss, Word Records, and was quite successful. Even today, Sparrow is among the top Christian labels. Hearn sold the label to EMI in 1992, and it was placed under the Capitol Christian Music Group. Sparrow signed a distribution agreement with MCA in April, 1981 to release their product in the secular market while the regular Sparrow issues were distributed to Christian stores and Christian radio stations. The arrangement with MCA lasted until October, 1986, when Sparrow switched distribution to Capitol. http://www.bitfellas.org/e107_plugins/content/content.php?content.1053 Page 1/2 Zine #4 - 32 - Interview With Don Bluth Majestic, Sun 04 May 2008 Interview With Don Bluth by Majestic of Brainstorm Don Bluth, the man behind Dragon's Lair and Space Ace. He's now here to answer some interview questions. 1) Why are there always dogs, cats or mice in the mainrole of the movie? Don Bluth: Think back: The fable of Aesop, also the indian legends and stories were always talking about animals. These animals have characteristics which remind us of our own. 2) Yours stories always have a lesson to tell. Do you think, that kids learn something from these stories? Don Bluth: I hope so. Myself for example learned alot from the old Disney movies. In "Bambi" said Thumper, the little rabid, about Bambi "It can't even work once correctly." The mother then replied "What did you daddy tell you? If you can't say anything nice, then say nothing at all." I never forgot those word in my life. 3) How did you come upon the idea to draw "Charlie"? Don Bluth:I once had five dogs. And since meanwhile all of them had left me, I wondered where they all went to. What happens to a dog when he dies? Do all dogs come to heaven? And so we had our sub-title called "All Dogs Go to Heaven". Then we added the storie of a lousy dog which comes to heaven and from there back to earth. 4) Which character was the most difficult to draw? Don Bluth:The little Maria-Ann.
