Simone Weil: an Anthology
PENGUIN CLASSICS SIMONE WElL : AN AN THOL OGY SIMONE WElL (1909-1 943) is one of the most important thinkers of the modern period. The distinctive feature of her work is the indissoluble link she makes between the theory and practice of both politics and religion and her translation of thought into action . A brilliant philosopher and mathematician, her life rep resents a quest for justice and balance in both the academic and the practical spheres. A scholar of deep and wide erudition, she became during the thirties an inspired teacher and activist. So as to experience physical labour at first hand, she spent almost two years as a car factory worker soon after the Front Populaire and later became a fighterin the Spanish Civil War. When her home city of Paris was occupied, she joined the Resistance in the South of France and became for a time an agricultural labourer before acceding to her parents' wish to escape Nazi persecution of the Jews by fleeing to New York. Leaving America, she joined the Free French in London where, frustrated by the exclusively intellectual nature of the work delegated to her, and weakened by a number of physical and emotional factors, she contracted tuberculosis and died in a Kentish sanatorium at the age of thirty-four. The bulk of her voluminous oeuvre was published posthumously. SIAN MILES was born and brought up in the bi-cultural atmos phere of Wales and educated there and in France where she has lived for many years. She has taught at a number of universities worldwide, including Tufts University, Massachusetts, Dakar University, Senegal and York University, Toronto. -
Law and Order
THE HAMLYN LECTURES Thirty-seventh series Law and Order Ralf Dahrendorf K.B.E., F.B.A. STEVENS Law and Order by Ralf Dahrendorf K.B.E., F.B.A. Professor of Social Science in the University of Constance; formerly Director of the London School of Economics In this book, based on his 1985 Hamlyn Lectures, Professor Ralf Dahrendorf considers the fundamental questions posed for the social order of free countries by the decline in respect for the law. Taking as his point of departure the terrors of our streets and the riots in our football grounds, Professor Dahrendorf discusses the implication for social order and liberty of such issues as unemployment, the cracks in the party system and the growing disorientation of the young. There are four major themes in the book— • The Road to Anomia—crime statistics are but the most dramatic symptoms of a loosening of social ties and norms. • Seeking Rousseau, Finding Hobbes—a widespread dream of goodness has resulted in the dismantling of some of the institutions designed to protect us from badness. • The Struggle for the Social Contract—underlying social changes have led from the class struggle to conflicts about the boundaries of society. • Society and Liberty—most reactions to the new condition involve threats to liberty—we need to reassert the links between law, order and liberty. Professor Dahrendorf has had a most distinguished career, both in his native Germany and in the United Kingdom. In Law and Order he offers a lively and stimulating analysis of a topic of vital importance in the life of every citizen. -

They were told as children: “You are the most gorgeous creature in the world, and every word you utter is a pearl of wisdom.” We were told: “Carmen, we are not interested in your opinion, go to the back of the class.” I’ve been joking a lot to my friends about this recently, and we all agree that we were raised not to have self-esteem. A lot of time, effort and money went into making us feel that we be must be good girls. We were taught to get married and have children, to remain virgins until then and to know our place. That said, it has to be remembered that I am 75 now and, please God, younger women have been spared much of that. My feminism came from my mother. The women who lived between the wars had it worst of all. They were always patronised. I hated the way she was treated. She was a young widow with four children and was always on the receiving end of charity. -

John Clarke, Richard Shiff, and Bruce Hunt have helped shape my scholarly development since my arrival at the University of Texas. I am also very grateful for Kimberly Smith’s continued guidance and encouragement. During my undergraduate study at Southwestern University, her dedication to her students inspired me to pursue graduate work, and I continue to look to her as a teaching role model. As an advisor, Linda Henderson has been exemplary during my time at the university. Her scholarship on the intersections between art and science has helped show me the possibilities for my own work in this area. In addition to research pursued in the library and collections at the University of Texas at Austin, I spent the summer of 2008 completing research at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. D6192 DR. STRANGELOVE (USA, 1964) (Other titles: Dr. [i.e. Docteur] Folamour; Dottor Stranamore) Credits: director, Stanley Kubrick ; writers, Stanley Kubrick, Terry Southern, Peter George. Cast: Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, Keenan Wynn. Summary: War/science fiction/comedy set in the contemporary U.S. A satire in which the President (Sellers) and his military advisers struggle ineptly to avert a holocaust after two psychotic generals - U.S. Air Force Commander Jack D. Ripper (Hayden) and Chief of Staff "Buck" Turgidson (Scott) - trigger an ingenious, irrevocable scheme to launch a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union because they fear the Russians are poisoning the water supply in the United States. The brains behind the scheme belong to Dr. Strangelove (also Sellers), a wheel-chair bound nuclear scientist who has bizarre ideas about mankind's future. Identified as a Vietnam War film by Robert Cumbow in Vietnam War films: “…this black-comic slap at military-political thinking and warning of the perils of military brinksmanship is an accidentally appropriate beginning to what became known as the Vietnam Era.” Adair, Gilbert.
