These imported articles are not intended for planting or growing, but they might serve to introduce exotic pests. The articles from the countries of origin listed in this manual are regulated because just one destructive pest might be enough to start a pest outbreak that can cause millions of dollars of damage to crops, trees, flowers, or lawns. By their destructiveness, pests can increase the price and reduce the quality of 04/2010-101 Fruits and Vegetables Manual 1-1 PPQ Introduction Scope food, lower property values, and ruin recreational areas. The extinction of just one plant species does away with the aesthetic, ecological, educational, historical, recreational, commercial, and scientific value of our world. Scope The Fruits and Vegetables Import Manual covers all fresh fruits and vegetables including fresh herbs and sprouts and immature nuts that have not been separated from their husk, that are imported from any foreign country, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, or Northern Mariana Islands. These fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs must be intended for consumption—not planting or growing. Only the approved plant part(s) of the fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs is allowed entry. See Figure 1-1 for some of the more common fruits and vegetables listed in this manual. Fruit Identification Guide 6. List of Commodity Names The manual also includes four Appendixes, a Glossary, and an Index. The Introduction contains basic information about the Fruits and Vegetables Import Manual. This chapter includes the manual’s purpose, scope, users, and application; a list of related documents that provide the authority for the manual’s content; directions about how to use the manual; and the conventions (unfamiliar or unique symbols and highlighting) that appear throughout the manual. The Procedures provides the prerequisites, the general inspection procedures for clearing commercial and noncommercial importations of fruits and vegetables, and special procedures for specifically described importations of fruits and vegetables. The Reference is a listing of admissible fruits and vegetables from foreign countries, Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and Palau.

This study focused on the antimicrobial potential of the fruit of Crescentia cujete or Calabash tree against common infections Staphylococcus aureus, a gram-positive bacteria, and Escherichia coli which is a gram- negative bacterium. Fruit extracts were obtained by maceration with ethanol for 24 hours at room temperature. The experimental research design was used through disc diffusion method. Findings of this study, however, revealed no antibacterial effect of the fruit extract against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Plants have been traditionally used for the treatment of infection of different aetiology. In this study two phylogenies are reconstructed using parsimony and Bayesian methods. A family-level phylogeny was estimated to test the monophyly and time of divergence of the South African lineage. This study primarily aimed to present preliminary characterization of the fruit extracts and fruit pulp of Crescentia cujete L. using several analytical techniques. Characterization of the crude MeOH extract and pure compound, trans-cinnamic acid, isolated from the fruit extract were performed using gas chromatography-electron ionization-mass spectrometry (GC-EI-MS). Lyophilized pulp was characterized by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Hydrochar samples resulting from hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of fruit pulp were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Eight constituents were eluted from the crude MeOH extract which were mainly composed of furan (5-Hydroxymethylfurfural, 53.99%), a pyranone derivative (2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4- one, 8.68%) and a carboxylic acid (3-phenyl-2-propenoic acid, 7.94% or compound 5). Other notable compounds of the extract include furaneol (0.78% and 1.56%), phenol, 2,4-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)- (3.73%), benzenepropanoic acid, 3,5-bis(1,1- dimethylethyl)-4-hydroxy-, methyl ester (1.15%) and n-hexadecanoic acid (0.59%).

The energy demand in Indonesia increases due to a significant growth in population, this fact has diminished the fossil fuel storage as our main non renewable energy source. Recently, there are a lot of researches on renewable energy; one of the most prominent is the development of bioethanol as a result of fermentation of sugar or starch containing materials. Palm sugar as one of the natural sugar sources can be obtained from most of palm trees such as coconut, aren, nipah, and siwalan. This paper explored the potential of Siwalan palm sugar development to be converted into bioethanol as renewable energy source through fermentation and purification processes. Siwalan palm sugar contains 8.658 ml ethanol out of 100 ml palm sugar liquid processed using fermentation and distillation. Bioethanol can further utilized as fuel when it is mixed with gasoline that called gasohol. In the future, it is expected that gasohol can replace gasoline consumption as an alternative energy that can be competitive in term of price in Indonesia.

However, for the performance of the germination test, there is no standardization in relation to the number of seeds and replicates. Thus, this work aims to determine the optimal sample size for germination tests with atemoya seeds. A germination test was carried out with 5 treatments, considering 10, 20, 30 40 and 50 seeds per sampling unit with 50 replicates of each. Data were analyzed using logistic regression, non-linear Gompertz regression models, bootstrap simulation and graphs in the form of contour lines in order to be able to infer the best binomial of the number of seeds per sampling unit and the number of replicates.
