THE ACTS of the Apostles is the fifth book of the New Testament; it tells of the founding of the Christian church and the spread of its message to the Roman empire. Acts is the second half of a two-part work, referred to as Luke-Acts, by the same anonymous author, referred to as Luke the Evangelist, and usually dated to around 80-90 AD. The first part, the Gospel of Luke, tells how God fulfilled his plan for the world's salvation through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, the promised Messiah. Acts continues the story of Christianity in the 1st century, beginning with the Ascension of Christ. The early chapters, set in Jerusalem, describe the Day of Pentecost (the coming of the Holy Spirit) and the growth of the church in Jerusalem. Initially the hearers are receptive to the Christian message, but soon they turn against the followers of the Messiah. Rejected by the local people, under the guidance of the Apostle Peter the message is taken to outsiders. The later chapters tell of Paul's conversion, his mission in Asia Minor and the Aegean, and finally his imprisonment in Rome, where, as the book ends, he awaits trial.

May—month of Mary

THE month of May in the Catholic Church is dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus, a custom which began at the end of the 13th Century. We know little about Mary, but she is honoured and revered for her hu- mility and for her obedience. St Luke tells us in his account of the Nativ- ity, that the shepherds spread the word concerning what had been told them about the child Jesus, but that Mary ‘treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.’ As the years passed, and especially as the events of that first Easter un- furled, Mary must indeed have pondered those things many times. We are accustomed to seeing images of her sitting serenely, holding the infant Jesus, or acknowledging the Magi as they kneel to present their gifts, but I like also to imagine Mary in a more domestic setting, as a mother; perhaps washing and dressing Jesus, teaching him to feed himself, steadying him as he took his first wobbly steps and doing the countless other things that every mother does for her child. May is a wonderful month for flower-lovers and gardeners so perhaps it is particularly fitting that it is the month of Mary and that we should think of Mary as she is so often depicted by medieval artists: sitting in a beautiful garden amid white roses and lilies: the traditional symbols of her purity.
