Steeped in culture and tradition, our history can be felt everywhere from the medieval castles and picture perfect villages scattered over meandering coastlines, to flower covered hillsides and lush golden plains. This old-fashioned charm mingles with new, cosmopolitan vibrancy. Indeed, our Capital city, Lisbon has a unique luminosity and energy that is bathed in 220 days of sunshine per year, making it one of the leading holiday destinations in the world. A country with a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Portugal is characterised by art and culture - from world class literature to music and dance – you haven’t experienced our nightlife unless you’ve discovered Fado, Portugal’s most popular, traditional music genre. Our cuisine is characterised by full-flavoured dishes, which vary from region to region. Rich and hearty meals abound in the North, while fresh fish and seafood thrive in the South. Speciality dishes include codfish, grilled sardines, tasty regional cheeses, egg sweets, and of course, Pasteis de Nata, our world famous custard tarts! In Portugal you will always find a table piled high with sumptuous dishes, accompanied by a diverse range of still and Port wines. There is a wine for every occasion and such a wealth of new styles and flavours to discover that you will never tire of exploring what we have to offer. If looking for an unforgettable experience, come challenge your senses and enjoy the unique. WHY CHOOSE/DRINK PORTUGUESE WINES? Authentic and distinctive. Over 250+ grapes call Portugal their native home and the diversity of wines they can create are an endless adventure of discovery. Rich history in quality winemaking. Portugal has been making wines since 2000 BC and part of our evolution and continued success is in our soil and climate. From sand to shale to influences from the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean to diverse microclimates and beyond, our vines have a variety of environments to create the ultimate expression in wine. Great winemaking isn’t just in our past — is also our future. Our new generation of winemakers use traditional wine blending techniques to innovate the types of wines Portugal can offer — creating a new category of incredibly food-friendly wines that match a variety of international cuisines. Don’t just take our word for it — Portuguese wines are recognised around the world for their quality and authenticity. Jancis Robinson has consistently applauded our wines as some of the best in the world. A recent calculation of her rankings over the past 13 years shows that Portuguese red wines have received the highest overall scores for any wine producing country. In 2016, 43% of all Portuguese wines submitted to Wine Spectator received a 90+ score. Our wines are constantly sought after by international buyers — a survey at the recent ProWein revealed that Portugal was the 4th most sought after country when it came to exploring portfolio expansion. Portugal was recently ranked one of the top 5 wine destinations in the world, with the Douro and Alentejo regions being consistently touted as top wine regions to visit by both Travel+Leisure and Wine Enthusiast. WINE IN MODERATION. The WINE in MODERATION programme is a European wine sector initiative aimed at promoting the responsible consumption of wine and wine products. It communicates the message that wine is a premium product to be savoured in moderation, and educates the public about the risks of excessive and improper consumption. It also encourages a wider cultural change in the approach to alcohol consumption. Viniportugal, the association responsible for the promotion of Portuguese wines, supports the WINE in MODERATION campaign through its ‘A Copo’ (wine by the glass) initiative, which promotes responsible drinking. The landscape mingles with the vines and cereal crops – an ever-changing canvas of colour: intensely green towards the end of winter, the colour of straw at the end of spring, and deep ochre during the final months of summer. 1 All over the Alentejo there are archaeological markers suggesting that wine has Historybeen an important part of life up to the present day. Whilst it is not known exactly when wine and viticulture was introduced to the Alentejo, there is plenty of evidence that they were already part of the day-to-day life in the Alentejo by the time the Romans arrived in the south of Portugal. It is thought that the Tartessians, an ancient civilisation based in the south of the Iberian Peninsula and heirs of the Andalusian Megalithic culture, were the first to domesticate vineyards and introduce winemaking principles in the Alentejo.

  • Unprecedented Rainfall in Wine-Growing Regions of Northern Portugal
UNPRECEDENTED RAINFALL IN WINE-GROWING REGIONS OF NORTHERN PORTUGAL Michael G. Sanderson1*, Marta Teixeira2, Natacha Fontes2, Sara Silva2, António Graça2 1Met Office, Fitzroy Road, Exeter, EX1 3PB, United Kingdom 2Sogrape Vinhos, S.A., Aldeia nova, 4430-809 Avintes, Portugal *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract Aim: Climate is arguably one of the most important factors determining the quality of wine from any given grapevine variety. High rainfall during spring can promote growth of the vines but increases the risk of fungal disease, while vineyard operations can be disrupted, as machinery may be prevented from getting in the vineyard owing to muddy soils. Conversely, high rainfall during harvest time (August to October) also bears the potential for severe operational disruption and heavy economic losses. To date, the probability of unprecedented rainfall amounts in spring and the harvest season has not been assessed over northern Portugal, specifically the three wine-growing regions of Vinho Verde, Trás-os-Montes and Porto and Douro DOC. In a situation of higher climatic variability, establishing the probable limits of rainfall variation during critical moments of the vine growth cycle will allow for better readiness of farmers as well as higher resilience of the whole value chain. Methods and Results: Observed rainfall totals for northern Portugal were extracted from version 21 of the E- OBS dataset. Monthly rainfall totals were archived from a series of 16 month-long hindcasts produced with the Met Office’s decadal prediction system DePreSys3. These hindcasts begin in November of each year, corresponding to the start of each viticultural campaign.

LUIS PATO (BAIRRADA, CURIA, BEIRAS REGION, CENTRAL PORTUGAL) www.luispato.com Luis Pato wines are the result of the association of two traditional families from Bairrada, the Pato family and the Melo Campos family. At the Quinta do Ribeirinho (Ribeirinho Estate) the documents reveal a wine production since the 18th Century. Its activity of wine bottling began in the 1970s. Affectionately known as the 'King of Bairrada', Luis Pato is the man who has done most to put this region on the modern winemaking map. He is one of Portugal's most controversial winemakers and is a serious player with 65 hectares in production. From 2006 his vineyards are devoted entirely to Portuguese varieties; all international varieties having uprooted. Pato's passion is the Baga grape, and he says his chalky clay soils are perfect for it. Other varieties like Touriga Nacional are grown on sandy soils, in a meticulously planned estate. Every year, between the middle and the end of August, we pick up for sparkling wine to get high levels of acidity; the second picking is made two weeks later, to the production of the white wine. Vinification/ Fermented in separate stainless steel vats under control temperature for 15 days. The Maturation second fermentation was made in the bottle to keep the flavour of flowers and fruits from the main grape.

  • International Herdade Das Barras November
GOLD MEDAL WINE CLUB Taste the Adventure! Portugal Vol. A • WITH A WINEMAKING HISTORY DATING OVER 4,000 YEARS OLD, PORTUGAL OFFERS THRILLINGLY DIFFERENT INDIGENOUS WINE GRAPE VARIETALS AND WONDERFULLY DIVERSE TERROIR . The fact that Portugal was named best wine region to visit by USA TODAY in 2014 came as no surprise to wine industry insiders. When you add the actuality that Portuguese wines have consistently placed extremely high among the world’s top wines for the past decade, you get the idea that the Portuguese are doing something right. Long a haven for dessert wines (Portuguese ports have been revered by practically everyone for the past two hundred years), modern Portuguese wineries have cropped up ever since Portugal joined the European Union in January of 1986 and international funding became available to the country’s mostly rural economy. Formerly bucolic areas suddenly became accessible and smart investors (generally Portuguese) jumped at the opportunity. No industry benefitted more than the enduring Portuguese Wine Industry. Smaller growers and wine producers received huge subsidies and grants that vastly improved winemaking facilities and vineyards. Small boutiques (quintas) revolutionized Portuguese winemaking and succeeded in establishing Portugal as an international market for more than port, madeira and Mateus. Wine growing regions suddenly sprung up in areas that had seldom seen vineyards and wineries, mostly state-of-the-art thanks to the huge influx of EU monies. Roads were widened and accompanying hotels and restaurants (as well as visitor facilities) became as fine as any in the country. Obscure regions such as this month’s featured Alentejo Region (see Region Section) benefited due to its closeness to Portugal’s main visitor stream in the Capitol of Lisbon.
