9 Evolutionary biology and health of hunter-gatherer populations ALi\lN FROMENT Introduction Hunter-gatherers display a wide variety of morphological and physiological characteristics, and should provide a good model for the evolution of human biological characters across a considerable range of environments in presumably isolated situations. This chapter examines both ecological and genetic aspects of the evolu tion of present-day hunter-gatherers and also comments on what the future will hold for those who now face or soon will face cultural and technological transition through contact with dominant groups. Hunter-gatherers are not recognisable by their biological character istics - they are defined by their way of life, namely their relation to nature, which is a cultural, not a biological, definition (see Panter Brick, Layton and Rowley-Conwy, this volume). However their close interaction with the physical and animal environment, their small and mobile groups, their dietary and work patterns, did create ecological and evolutionary characteristics which shaped biological outcomes. Existing variation in biological traits will be examined as evolutionary responses to climate, diet and disease. Some partially unanswered questions related to evolution and transition can be listed. Concerning morphology, is small stature an adaptation to hunting and gathering? What is the genetic basis for anatomical characteristics and what room is there for modulation by nutritional and infectious variables? Is there a secular trend modifying these -

The present treatise is an introduction to a larger one now in course of preparation. While this larger work is to discuss the distribution of the bow and arrow throughout South America, and to widen the knowledge of her mixed populations by means of a thorough investi- gation of material in museums and the study of literature, it is the aim of this brochure to point out the system only in general outline, with the comparison of the materials furnished for the classification of bow and arrow, and to set forth for a circumscribed region—the Mato Grosso—how, through the harmonizing of different tribal groups, ethnographic types arise; what share the several associated tribes have had in this creation of groups; and, on the other hand, what ethnographic development within the group each tribe has undergone. It will not be possible to make an extended review of individual tribes in a preliminary description of the bow and the arrow. This is in view for the later work, and at this time it will be presented only so far as an ethnographic characterization is necessary. In the same way here the review will be only so extended concerning the meaning' of these weapons for a tribe as to reveal some variation of the arts by which an advancing or retarding momentum in the ethnographic development has been given. -

Cercanía lingüística entre las lenguas tucano del pirá-paraná: aspectos gramaticales POR OLGA ARDILA Departamento de Lingüística UNIVERSIDAD NACIONAL DE COLOMBIA 1 A fin de definir y precisar el amplio panorama lingüís- tico de las lenguas Tucano del Vaupés se ha venido lle- vando a cabo un estudio comparativo que permita definir y precisar las relaciones de afinidad entre dichas lenguas y sus características comunes. El presente artículo analiza la cercanía lingüística a nivel gramatical existente entre las lenguas tatuyo, carapana, barasana y macuna habla- das en las inmediaciones del río Pirá-Paraná y caños ad- yacentes. Los resultados muestran lo mismo que a nivel fonológico y lexical, un estrecho nivel de cercanía lin- güística entre las cuatro variedades comparadas, siendo mayor la afinidad entre las varíedades tatuyo-carapana y barasana-macuna. Palabras claves: Lingüística aborigen, comparatísmo, lenguas Tu- cano, Amazonas. El actual departamento del Vaupés se encuentra habitado en su mayor parte por grupos pertenecientes a la sub-familia lingüística Tucano- Oriental. Starting from a description of the uluki exchange ceremony, we will discuss how this ritual, by mobilizing Xinguano ideas about friendship, produces contexts of interaction in which characteristics of intra-village sociality are extended to regional sociality. At the same time that the uluki defines, together with other regional rituals, a certain “Xinguano interiority” (the world of multi-community rituals), it is also one of its main forms of opening, having the potential to attract to the Xinguano world not only singular persons, but entire groups. Maize As Material Culture? Amazonian Theories of Persons and Things
Miller, Maize as material culture? MAIZE AS MATERIAL CULTURE? AMAZONIAN THEORIES OF PERSONS AND THINGS THERESA MILLER Introduction: the ‘nature’ of materials in anthropological analyses As a significant sub-discipline within anthropology, material culture studies have been at the forefront of ground-breaking theories regarding the relationships between people and things. A whole genre of object biographies have been produced, based on Kopytoff’s (1986) article on the ‘social life of things’ (cf. Saunders 1999, Thomas 1999, Harrison 2003). Daniel Miller’s (1987) interpretation of Hegel’s dialectical materialism led to a serious discussion of how people and objects mutually reinforce and create each other. While Kopytoff’s theory has been widely criticized for its passive, semiotic approach (Thomas 1999, Holtorf 2002), Miller’s notion of ‘materiality’ (1987, 2010) moved away from the meanings of objects to focus on how they act within the field of social relations. As more anthropologists and archaeologists engage with material culture studies, however, the assumptions on which this sub-field have been based are being called into question. Rival’s edited volume (1998) includes ethnographic accounts attempting to reconcile the symbolic and material aspects of person ̶ thing relationships. Ingold (2007b) adopts a more radical view, bypassing a discussion of symbolism and critiquing ‘materiality’ for being an abstract category. His phenomenological approach calls for an analysis of the material substance and affects/effects of things. Instead of analysing the ‘thinginess’ of things, as is the case in materiality studies, Ingold advocates an exploration of how things are ‘thingly’; that is, how they emerge in the world of both people and things (Ingold 2007b: 9). -

(Chefe kalapalo, sobre o conhecimento da fala ritual) Antes mesmo de figurar como uma questão importante nas etnografias, os chefes alto xinguanos2 (anetü3, em kalapalo; anetaõ, em sua forma coletiva) já faziam parte da realidade do contato. Ramiro Noronha (1952), em 1920, falava em “caciques” e “capitães”, e os Bakairi já traduziam a diferença entre chefes e não chefes sob a forma da oposição capitão/camarada (certamente desde muito antes). This man created a radically new liturgy and cosmology by combining elements borrowed from local shamanism and mythology, Christianity and TV shows, among other sources. He managed to convince entire villages to take part in spectacular healing ceremonies and gathered a huge number of followers. One of these ceremonies was extensively filmed by indigenous filmmakers, making it possible to examine the micromechanisms of this cultural innovation, and thus address with fresh data and a new approach the old issue of Amerindian prophetism. We propose here the concept of translating acts to describe this indigenous practice of transcreation, giving special attention to the multiple semiotic mediums through which it is enacted.
