Raffoul Maîtrise en Études Internationales Janvier 2017 Mémoire présenté en vue de l’obtention du grade de Maîtrise en Études Internationales. © Alexandre Raffoul, 2017 Résumé Depuis les années 1990, le partage du pouvoir est l’option favorisée pour la consolidation de la paix dans les sociétés multi-ethniques. Or, une importante littérature a remis en cause sa capacité à consolider la paix sur le long terme. Ce mémoire questionne l’approche de l’ethnicité, des institutions et des relations peuple-élites dans la théorie du partage du pouvoir. Il propose de la ré- approcher en se basant sur la théorie constructiviste de l’ethnicité, qui reconnaît la multiplicité et la relative fluidité des identités ethniques, sur une approche néo-institutionnaliste, qui étudie les interactions des institutions avec leur environnement, et en accordant une attention particulière au lien entre peuple et élites. Ce mémoire développe trois arguments principaux. 1–La politisation du clivage ethnique nuit au bon fonctionnement d’un système démocratique, menace la durabilité de la paix et transforme la nature de la violence. Le « succès » du partage du pouvoir peut donc être défini comme la dépolitisation de ce clivage. 2–La politisation du clivage ethnique n’est pas naturelle, mais résulte d’un processus dans lequel les institutions formelles et informelles ainsi que la violence jouent des rôles clés. 3–La dépolitisation du clivage ethnique est possible si des garanties pour représentation politique et la sécurité des catégories ethniques sont mises en place, et si des incitatifs pour la mobilisation d’identités non-ethniques sont apportés. -

“Egyptian Darkness” to the Condemnation of Blackness
FROM “EGYPTIAN DARKNESS” TO THE CONDEMNATION OF BLACKNESS: THE BIBLICAL EXODUS AND THE RELIGIOUS AND PHILOSOPHICAL ORIGINS OF RACISM A Thesis Submitted to The Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts by William B. Chamberlin IV December 2018 Thesis Approvals: Dr. Ama Mazama, Dept. of Africology and African-American Studies i ABSTRACT This thesis examines of the religious and philosophical origins of racism, arguing that anti-black, anti-African racism has its origins in the biblical account of the ancient Israelites’ exodus from Egypt and the events recounted in the Hebrew scriptures. It begins with an examination of the nature of racism itself, considering how the contemporary experience of and scholarship about racism can illuminate the search for racism’s historical origins. Contemporary experience has taught us that the functioning of racism often operates independently of the explicit racial prejudice coupled with power once thought to comprise it. This understanding has been reflected in scholarship that has examined how racism has functioned through hierarchical discourse, a concept which is defined and analyzed at some length. Following this examination comes a “genealogical” tracing of hierarchical discourse about African phenomena in the Western-dominated academy, leading to the centrality of the religious concept of idolatry in the making of racist accounts of African phenomena. Finally, the thesis concludes with a chapter on the mytho-historical exodus event, which gave birth to this concept of idolatry, analyzing the meaning and significance of the event in the making of racist discourse. This thesis demonstrates that a broader understanding of racism as an outgrowth of a worldview necessarily hostile to alternatives, when applied to the study of the historical development of racism, paints a far more convincing and complete portrait of the origins of racism, its historical development, and its present functioning than studies based on a more narrow understanding of racism. -

Tracing the History of Museums in Egypt from the Ptolemaic Period to the Fall of Mohamed Ali’s Dynasty (323 BC – AD 1952) Rania Ali Maher, Noha Moustafa Shalaby Knowing that there were places for learning within the precincts of Egyptian temples,9 the idea of education within a temple, Tracing the History of Museums in Egypt from the Ptolemaic Period preferably dedicated to the goddesses of knowledge, could have been then transmitted to Pythagoras who applied it in Italy. Intriguingly, Plato also studied in Egypt under priest-scholars.10 On the other hand, there is no clear indication that Aristotle to the Fall of Mohamed Ali’s Dynasty (323 BC – AD 1952) visited Egypt;11 however, being Plato›s student12 is enough to confirm the Egyptian influence on him. AFRICAN HISTORIOGRAPHY: From colonial historiography to UNESCO's general history of Africa Bethwell A. Ogot Since the later 19th century, the study of African history has undergone radical changes. From about 1885 to the end of the Second World War, most of Africa was under the yoke of colonialism; and hence colonial historiography held sway. According to this imperial historiography, Africa had no history and therefore the Africans were a people without history. They propagated the image of Africa as a 'dark continent'. Any historical process or movement in the conti nent was explained as the work of outsiders, whether these be the mythical Hamites or the Caucasoids. Consequently, African history was for the most part seen as the history of Europeans in Africa - a part of the historical progress and development of Western Europe and an appendix of the national history of the metropolis. It was argued at the time that Africa had no history because history begins with writing and thus with the arrival of the Europeans. Their presence in Africa was therefore justified, among other things, by their ability to place Africa in the 'path of history'. Colonialism was celebrated as a 'civilising mission' carried out by European traders, missionaries and administrators.! Thus African historiography was closely linked with the colonial period and its own official historiography, with prejudices acquired and disseminated as historical knowiedge, and with eurocentric assumptions and arrogant certainty. Social Darwinism accorded Europeans an innate superiority over other peoples and justified Europe's plunder of the rest of the world. But even during the dark days of colonialism there were other historians, for example the traditional historians, African historians educated in the West and Western colonial critics sueh as Basil Davidson, who were writing different African or colonial histories. -
