Chak De India-2007 This YashRaj production with Shahrukh still no melodrama, no parental opposition, no romance but still went on to touch the hearts of the audience. CHAK DE INDIA, directed by Shmit Amin, opens a new territory. A territory of emotions, inspirations and love for our national sport. The movie is about a man who tries to prove his dedication and love for the nation after being labeled as traitor by the people of his own nation Kabir Khan(Shah Rukh Khan) played the role of centre-forward in Indian hockey team in the movie and went on to miss the last-minute penalty shoot out against Pakistan in the world finals. This penalty shoot-out changed his life so much so that he was betrayed by his own team, people of his own country. But seven years later Kabir Khan, comes back but not as centre forward but as the coach of Indian women hockey team, a team that is just on papers, a team that used to play for themselves not for their country. The movie deals with teaching the team different skills and plans, playing as a team and adapting different styles and technique againt different teams. It is about using everything that life hurls on them as a weapon to fight their enemies. If you will watch the movie you will definately feel excited. The direction is such that during the last panelties one remains excited till the end. Even though it is a bollywood movie and one knows India is going to win. But the dirction grips us to our seats with the excitment of what is going to happen next I had never seen Shah Rukh in such an inspirational role. I really liked the way he used his facial expressions and intense eyes to his advantage, with utmost conviction SRK played a man simmering and seething within. Also apart from SRK the acting of girls in the women hockey team was praiseworthy. Chak De India may not be the best bolloywood movie to watch but is it among really good movies that Bolloywood has produced. It was much more than my expectation from YashRaj production and Shahrukh Khan. I feel that a lot of credits must be given to the director of the movie, Shimit Amin who did such an awesome work in his second movie. I am also glad to mention that the movie went on to win 8 best movie awards including National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) awards in 2008. At the end I would like to applaud the Indian team for winning silver medal in Commonwealth Games 2014 and is eagerly waiting for the day when Indian will again win gold in their national sport, Hockey..

Bollywood's Lens on Indian Society Professor Anita Weiss INTL 448/548, Spring 2018 [email protected] Mondays, 4-7:20 pm 307 PLC; 541 346-3245 Course Syllabus Film has the ability to project powerful images of a society in ways conventional academic mediums cannot. This is particularly true in learning about India, which is home to the largest film industries in the world. This course explores images of Indian society that emerge through the medium of film. Our attention will be focused on the ways in which Indian society and history is depicted in film, critical social issues being explored through film; the depicted reality vs. the historical reality; and the powerful role of the Indian film industry in affecting social orientations and values. Course Objectives: 1. To gain an awareness of the historical background of the subcontinent and of contemporary Indian society; 2. To understand the sociocultural similarities yet significant diversity within this culture area; 3. To learn about the political and economic realities and challenges facing contemporary India and the rapid social changes the country is experiencing; 4. To learn about the Indian film industry, the largest in the world, and specifically Bollywood. Class format Professor Weiss will open each class with a short lecture on the issues which are raised in the film to be screened for that day. We will then view the selected film, followed by a short break, and then extensive in- class discussion. Given the length of most Bollywood films, we will need to fast-forward through much of the song/dance and/or fighting sequences.

INDIA By: Shashi Prajapati Abstract: India is a country of diverse identity where each individual identifies himself/herself with regard to his/ her class, caste, religion, gender, language, region etc. Sometimes these identities lead to the conflicting situations especially when one is obsessed with any particular identity. This may sometimes lead to the threat to our national integrity. In such a case, maintaining the togetherness becomes a tough task. The contribution of Bollywood in this regard is not encouraging especially in the last few decades. The obsession of Bollywood with hero worship has done the huge damage to our society. Most of the films in the name of national integration create a narrow vision of Hindu-Muslim harmony. Films based on public participation are rare to find. Keeping these facts into consideration, the present paper picks up two classic Bollywood movies of 21st century - Lagaan and Chak De! India which relate the story of public participation. Keywords: Bollywood, Sikh, Sikh Character, War, Drama, Crime, Biopic, Action, Diljit Dosanhj, Punjab Abstract Sikhs have been ordinarily spoken to in mainstream Hindi film either as courageous warriors or as classless rustics. In the patriot message in which the envisioned was an urban North Indian, Hindu male, Sikh characters were uprooted and made to give entertainment. Bollywood stars have donned the turban to turn Sikh cool, Sikhs view the representation of the community in Bollywood as demeaning and have attempted to revive the Punjabi film industry as an attempt at authentic self-representation. But with the passage of time the Bollywood makers experimented with the role and images of Sikh character. Sunny Deol's starrer movie Border and Gadar led a foundation of Sikh identity and real image of Sikh community and open the doors for others. This paper examines representation of Sikhs in new Bollywood films to inquire if the romanticization of Sikhs as representing rustic authenticity is a clever marketing tactic used by the Bollywood. Introduction Bollywood is the sobriquet for India's Hindi language film industry, situated in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is all the more officially alluded to as Hindi film. The expression "Bollywood" is frequently utilized by non-Indians as a synecdoche to allude to the entire of Indian film; be that as it may, Bollywood legitimate is just a piece of the bigger Indian film industry, which incorporates other creation communities delivering films in numerous other Indian dialects.

The Year 2017 has been a mixed bag for stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Kangana Ranaut and Ranbir Ka- poor. While hopes were pinned high on some of their ilms, they fell lat in front of the audience, who had expected much more than what they got. Industry experts like Girish Johar and Vinod Mirani have described 2017 as a “very dis- appointing” and “bad” year as the Hindi ilm industry was rattled by failures. And amidst that came ilms like “Toilet: Ek Ranbir and Katrina on a promotional appearance. Prem Katha”, “Golmaal Again” and “Fukrey Returns”, which re- ceived a good response. IANS has compiled a mix of ilms that came with high expec- tations but failed to strike a chord with the audience. * “Jagga Jasoos”: A musical drama starring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, the ilm had been in production for over three years. It was inally released in 2017. Amitabh Bachchan promoting ‘Sarkar 3’. The ilm met with a lukewarm response at the box ofice as it collected a mere Rs 54.16 crore.
