Points to Ponder

Go through at least some of the weblink videos and print articles listed above and then think over the points/questions raised below:

1. Consider the difference between the international appeal of Hindi films like that of Raj Kapoor and the global outreach of Bollywood films. Bollywood films manage to appeal to both Indian as well as Diasporic Indian audiences. There must be an underlying cultural code and emotional connect that they are tapping 2. What in your opinion is the one single most important characteristic of Bollywood cinema that makes it succeed internationally? 3. Do you think the cross-over international audience notes the patriarchal constructs of Bollywood films or does it just valorize the clean romance (no nudity and pre or extra marital sex), music, glamour and family values of these films ?

A Bollywood star like Shahrukh Khan having such an international appeal is a puzzle. Identify some of the qualities of the characters he portrays which you think might appeal to young women in countries such as Germany.
