PJAEE, 17(6) (2020) REPRESENTATION OF SIKH CHARACTER IN BOLLYWOOD MOVIES:A STUDY ON SELECTIVE BOLLYWOOD MOVIES Navpreet Kaur Assistant Professor University Institute of Media Studies, Chandigarh University, Punjab, India [email protected] Navpreet Kaur, Representation Of Sikh Character In Bollywood Movies: A Study On Selective Bollywood Movies– Palarch’s Journal of Archaeology of Egypt/Egyptology 17(6) (2020), ISSN 1567-214X. Keywords: Bollywood, Sikh, Sikh Character, War, Drama, Crime, Biopic, Action, Diljit Dosanhj, Punjab Abstract Sikhs have been ordinarily spoken to in mainstream Hindi film either as courageous warriors or as classless rustics. In the patriot message in which the envisioned was an urban North Indian, Hindu male, Sikh characters were uprooted and made to give entertainment. Bollywood stars have donned the turban to turn Sikh cool, Sikhs view the representation of the community in Bollywood as demeaning and have attempted to revive the Punjabi film industry as an attempt at authentic self-representation. But with the passage of time the Bollywood makers experimented with the role and images of Sikh character. Sunny Deol's starrer movie Border and Gadar led a foundation of Sikh identity and real image of Sikh community and open the doors for others. This paper examines representation of Sikhs in new Bollywood films to inquire if the romanticization of Sikhs as representing rustic authenticity is a clever marketing tactic used by the Bollywood. Introduction Bollywood is the sobriquet for India's Hindi language film industry, situated in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is all the more officially alluded to as Hindi film. The expression "Bollywood" is frequently utilized by non-Indians as a synecdoche to allude to the entire of Indian film; be that as it may, Bollywood legitimate is just a piece of the bigger Indian film industry, which incorporates other creation communities delivering films in numerous other Indian dialects. -

At a café a Pakistani man named Changez (Riz Ahmed) tells Bobby (Liev Schreiber), an American journalist, about his experiences in the United States. Roll back ten years, and we find a younger Changez fresh from Princeton, seeking his fortune on Wall Street. The American Dream seems well within his grasp, complete with a smart and gorgeous artist girlfriend, Erica (Kate Hudson). But when the Twin Towers are attacked, a cultural divide slowly begins to crack open between Changez and Erica. Changez’s dream soon begins to slip into nightmare: he is transformed from a well-educated, upwardly mobile businessman to a scapegoat and perceived enemy. Taking us through the culturally rich and beguiling worlds of New York, Lahore and Istanbul, The Reluctant Fundamentalist is a story about conflicting ideologies where perception and suspicion have the power to determine life or death. A MULTI-LAYERED VISION “Looks can be deceiving.” Changez Khan “An Indian director making a film about a Pakistani man. That’s not an easy thing to do,” says novelist and co-screenwriter Mohsin Hamid of The Reluctant Fundamentalist, the new film from award-winning filmmaker Mira Nair, based on Hamid’s acclaimed novel of the same name. -

Sunny Singh London Metropolitan University [email protected]
The Road to Rāmar ājya : Analysing Shah Rukh Khan’s Parallel Text in Commercial Hindi Cinema Sunny Singh London Metropolitan University [email protected] This paper attempts to trace the construction of Shah Rukh Khan’s parallel text with explicit references to the Hindu epic Rāmāyana through an analysis of key cinematic texts produced from 1995 to 2007. The analysis follows the development of Shah Rukh Khan’s star text as a growing narrative drawn from, and interacting with, the epic and its protagonist, Rāma , and his idealised reign, Rāmar ājya , which is used in India to refer to an epoch of social stability. In addition, the paper explores how the star’s parallel text intersects the aspirations of a nation poised at the edge of monumental change, and the ways in which it challenges and subverts the popularly accepted notions of the growth of Hindu nationalist politics in the country in the late-1990s, finally leading to the assertion of a new, post-Hindutva, post-globalization identity as an Indian Muslim. Keywords: Shah Rukh Khan; India; stars; Bollywood; Rāmāyana . -
Naaree Interviews Nandita Das February 2013
Naaree Interviews Nandita Das February 2013 An Interview with Actor And Director, Nandita Das By Swarnendu Biswas © Naaree.com www.naaree.com Page 1 Naaree Interviews Nandita Das February 2013 Her razor-sharp intellect and uncommon sensitivity towards social issues complement her enchanting beauty and compelling aesthetic talent. But while talking to Nandita Das it was very difficult to comprehend the gravity of the fact that I was conversing with a world-renowned actress and director, for she lets the weight of her astonishing achievements and enviable fame sit lightly on her slim, elegant and strong shoulders. Her unassuming and easy going personality belies the fact that she is one of the most critically acclaimed actresses of serious Indian cinema of our times, and also the fact that her maiden directorial effort has made the world of cinema to sit up and recognise the arrival of a new cinematic genius from India; a country whose film repertoire is even now by and large perceived by overtly melodramatic and utterly mediocre mainstream Bollywood fare. Casually Famous Even the immense significance of the fact that the French Government had conferred her with the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres), one of the most prestigious civilian awards in the world, in 2008, for her contribution to art and culture, hasn’t infused any hint of arrogance into her friendly personality. In this context, it also deserves a mention here that, in 2011, Nandita became the first Indian to be inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Women’s Forum. -
