In agroecosystems, pollination and control of crop pests provide benefits worth billions of dollars annually. Effective sampling and monitoring of these beneficial arthropods is essential for ensuring their short- and long-term viability and effectiveness. There are numerous methods available for sampling beneficial arthropods in a variety of habitats, and these methods can vary in efficiency and effectiveness. In this paper I review active and passive sampling methods for non-Apis bees and arthropod natural enemies of agricultural pests, including methods for sampling flying insects, arthropods on vegetation and in soil and litter environments, and estimation of predation and parasitism rates. Sample sizes, lethal sampling, and the potential usefulness of bycatch are also discussed. Beneficial arthropods, such as pollinators of crops and natural enemies of arthropod pests and weeds, play important roles in the economic and ecological success of agroecosystems. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The chromosome complements and male meiosis of 12 species belonging to the subfamily Harpactorinae from north India have been described for the first time. All the species show twelve pairs of autosomes and X multiplicity with 9 species having X1X2X3Y and 3 species having X1X2Y sex mechanism. The general course of meiosis in all the presently studied species is fairly uniform. Autosomes show a high degree of decondensation and sex chromosomes are condensed during the diffuse stage. Single terminal chiasma per bivalent is seen in all except Sycanus croceovittatus Dohrn, which has two terminal chiasmata in one or two bivalents. A regular arrangement of chromosomes at metaphase I has been observed in 7 species, but in the rest, no definite pattern is recorded. In Euagoras erythrocephala Livingstone and Ravichandran, more than one type of arrangement is seen. At metaphase II, autosomes form a ring in the center of which lies the pseudomul- tivalent in all the species excepting Rhynocoris costalis (Stål). In Sycanus croceovittatus, a proper pseudotetravalent is lacking. -

SCHAEFER, Panhandle State Colle.e, Goodwell The Corixidae or water boatman family is a commonly collected fam ily taken in a variety of aquatic habitats and frequently at lights at night or on shiny surfaces during the day. Hungerford's 1948 monograph on the world corixids is an important contribution, essential to a serious collector. My paper is an attempt to make the identification of state fonns easier and to supply descriptions and distribution data for the corixids of the state. Schaefer and Drew (1964) reported 18 species and Ewing (1964) added one for the state. Five addi tional species are included because information of their known ranges in dicates that they will probably be found in Oklahoma when more collecting is done. Each pair of legs is modified for a different function. The anterior pair is short with the tenninal segment (pala) often more or less spoon shaped and fringed with bristles for food gathering. Both adults and nymphs feed mainly on algae and protozoa, obtained from bottom ooze (Usinger, 1956). The middle pair of legs, used for anchorage and support, is long and slender, tenninating with two long claws. The hind pair, for swimming, is stouter, laterally flattened and fringed with hairs. The principal dimorphic structures used as key characters are as fol lows: males, usually smaller, with vertex of the head otten more produced and frons concavely depressed. Fonn and chaetotaxy of the male palae, front tarsi, are much used characters. The female abdomen is bilaterally symmetrical, while the asymmetry of male may be either to the right (dextral) or left (stnistral). -

The rancid odor of Arilus and other reduviids actually comes from Brindley's glands, which in the North (A. cristatus) and South (A. carinatus) American wheel bugs studied emit similar blends of 2-methylpropanoic, butanoic, 3-methylbutanoic, and 2-methylbutanoic acids. The Arilus SG secretions studied here are absolutely species- specifi c. The volatile SG components of A. carinatus include (E)-2-octenal, (E)-2-none- nal, (E)-2-decenal, (E,E)-2,4-nonadienal, (E)-2-undecenal, hexanoic acid, 4-oxo-nonanal, (E,E)-2,4-decadienal, (E,Z)-2,4- or (Z,E)-2,4-decadienal, and 4-oxo-(E)-2-nonenal; whereas in A. cristatus the SG secretion contains β-pinene, limonene, terpinolene, terpinen-4-ol, thy- mol methyl ether, α-terpineol, bornyl acetate, methyl eugenol, β-caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, and farnesol. -

Munis Entomology & Zoology, 12 (1): 254- 257] ABSTRACT: Gardena melinarthrum Dohrn, 1859, belonging to subfamily Emesinae of family Reduviidae recorded for the first time from West Bengal (Jalpaiguri dist.), India and redescribed along with additional diagnostic characters and measurements of different body parts. KEY WORDS: Reduviidae, Reduviinae, Gardena melinarthrum, new record, India The genus Gardena Dohrn belonging to the division Emesaria of the subfamily Emesinae under the family Reduviidae of Heteroptera (Hemiptera). The genus Gardena was named by Dohrn in 1859 with Ceylonese melinarthrum (sic) as the only species included, but this species and the genus itself were not described by Dohrn until 1860. Numerous additional species of Gardena have since been described from many parts of the world. Distant (1903) has described and recorded species, bicolour Distant, near Rangoon: Myanmar and recorded the species melinarthrum Dohrn from Sri Lanka under the genus Gardena. He further (1909) described the species fasciata under the genus Gardena. McAtee & Malloch (1926) expressed their doubt about the status of the species Gardena bicolour Distant, considering it is a probable synonym of melinarthrum described by Dohrn from Myanmar.
