I I 1.0 INTRODUCTION I 1.1 General I Terrain analysis, which includes terrain classi- I fication and mapping,was conducted by Hardy Associates (1978) Ltd., Calgary, Alberta, along the Dempster routeof I Foothills Pipe Lines (Yukon) Ltd. Basic information obtained I during terrain classificationand mapping describesand identifies 1) the bedrock and soils materials near ground surface, 2) geologic and engineering propertiesof these materials, 3) stratigraphy and permafrost characteristics of surficial materials, 4) geologic history of terrain units and landforms, 5) topography and drainage character- istics of landforms. 1.2 Sources of Data Terrain analysisis based on airphoto interpre- tation and supplementedby published information, field investigations, and drilling programs. Terrain classification and mapping information appearsas the photomosaic portion of the alignment sheets. Geological and geophysical field investigations and drilling programs conducted during1977 and 1978 provided field information to substantiate airphoto interpretation. -1- HARDY ASSOCIATES Cl8781 LTD. Ground reconnaissanceand field surveys included observations onlandforms, geologic materials, permafrost, vegetation, topography, drainage, and present erosional features . Drilling and laboratory work provided information on soil and rock type, permafrost, moisture content, grain size, and other engineering properties. Thermistor strings were installed at selected localities to provide ground temperature data. Reports and maps by the Geological Surveyof Canada, Department of Energy,.Mines and Resources, were the largest source of published information on bedrock and soil materials along the Dempsterpipeline corridor. Principal works are referredto in this report andare listed in the References Section. 1.3 Presentation of Terrain Data The photomosaic alignment sheets preparedby Hardy Associates (1978) Ltd. during 1978 show the distribution and characteristics of terrain units along the pipeline corridor. This information is supplemented by reports on geophysical surveys and drilling programswhich were prepared for Foothills Pipe Lines (Yukon)Ltd. and have these titles: -2- I HARPV ASSOCIATES tlB7El LTD. Further information on the terrain typing system developed for the Dempster route is described in this report. La'ndforms have distinctive topographic and,geomorphïcexpresaion,,,geologic origin and material, drainage and vegetation characteristics. Following iden- tification, ,landformsare mapped as terrain units or terrain types on the basis of their environmerit of deposition. Each terrain unit is the'n described in a legend witha list of characteristic properties. Terrain mapping not only outlines the boundaries of various terrain unitsbut also fcrrrns a necessary base for use in choosing specific areas where field investigations can provide additional informationfor characterizing terrain units. Field investigations, including., geological and,geophysical surveys and,geotechnical drilling and sampling programs, may then' be 'carried out to determine the geological and engineering properties of .the units,.fox example, material type 'and,ground ice content. Soil and bedrock types were identifiedand des- cribed on the basisof published data and thelogs of bore- holes drilled for Foothills Pipe Lines(Yukon) Ltd. during i977 and 1978. Soil type may vary withinterrain units which had a similar environmentof deposition , due to differences in underlying bedrock, climate, topography, and geologic history. Such regional variations between similar terrain units are accounted,forby means of legends developed for the major physiographic regions crossed by the route. I 3.1- Arctic.. Coastal. Plain I 3.1.1 Mackenzie Delta I The Mackenzie Delta division of the Arctic Coastal 'I Plain covers that part of the pipeline route from Richards I Island to 4.4 km south of Noel1 Lake and includes the Parsons Lake and Niglintgak laterals. It consists of the I modern Mackenzie Delta and the Pleistocene Delta. The flat- lying modern Mackenzie Delta is a vast deposit of silt and ,I sand that fills the Mackenzie Trough and extends seaward I (Hughes, et al., 1973).     Klondike Highway Road Log This 717 km/445 mile road, which is mostly paved, connects Skagway Alaska and Dawson City Yukon , heart of the Klondike. Beginning at Skagway, the road climbs for 14 miles/22.5 km to the 3,292 foot/1003 m summit near the Alaska/Canada border. Between Skagway and the border the road roughly parallels the old White Pass Trail, an alternate to the Chilkoot Trail which ultimately proved more popular as it was the shorter of the two climbs. The only population center along the 114 miles/183 km of connecting routes between Skagway and Whitehorse is the small community of Carcross. At present, there are no services between Skagway and Carcross. The mileage markers along the way indicate the distance from Skagway. Yukon Metamorphic Complex of Ordovician to Devonian age (470 Ma, Rb-Sr date) covers most of the Clinton Creek area. The most prominent metamorphism of the area occurred in Permian time (245 to 278 Ma, K-Ar dates). Based on intensity and style of deformation of ultramafic bodies and country rocks it is suggested that the ultramafic rocks were emplaced probably during the Permian period. Tintina fault is a weak zone along which the alpine ultramafic bodies of Clinton Creek and probably some of the others along and close to the Tintina Trench were tectonically emplaced.

    Campbell Highway & South Canol Road Interpretive Plan Yukon Depar tment of Tourism Heritage Branch February 1997 Revised March 2005 Inukshuk Planning & Development In Association with EDA Collaborative Inc. and Aasman Design Inc. Foreword The Department of Tourism Heritage Branch will use this interpretive plan for the Campbell Highway and South Canol Road to guide the loca- tion, development and replacement of interpretive signage along these road corridors. The plan is consistent with the 1995 Yukon-wide guidelines for new site selection, spacing distances, site ratio- nalization, sign construction and maintenance. The formation of partnerships with other govern- ment agencies such as Renewable Resources, Community & Transportation Services, First Nations and area communities will influence the timing, pace and manner of implementation. This plan provides a framework for action. The report has been prepared by a consulting team comprised of Ian Robertson (Inukshuk Planning & Development), Ted Muller (EDA Collaborative Inc.) and Al and Margriet Aasman (Aasman Design Inc.) under the able direction of Loree Stewart (YTG Heritage Branch). Weston (eds.), Yukon Geological Survey, p. 181-195. ABSTRACT A reconnaissance inventory of permafrost-related landslides in the Pelly River watershed was conducted in 2006, largely in response to local community concerns regarding the potential impacts of climate change on slope stability and possible effects on water quality. Using aerial photograph analysis, satellite imagery, and visual inspection from a fixed-wing aircraft, over 100 permafrost- related slides were located near the Pelly and MacMillan rivers and various tributaries. Basic geomorphic characteristics were determined for many of the failures based on analysis of remote sensing data, and reviews of existing literature and surficial geology maps. Most of the landslides identified were small active-layer detachments and retrogressive thaw failures. Several large failures also illustrate important characteristics associated with permafrost-related landslides, including their source-area setting, triggers, high mobility, the longevity of their activity and their ability to impact very large areas. The nature and distribution of the identified failures highlights a number of implications for land-use in central Yukon and emphasizes the need for enhanced methods of permafrost detection and regional mapping in the Territory.
