4 J U N E 2020 I Call 403-720-0762 for advertising opportunities Just Around the Corner by Caleb Donner- Prairie Winds 4-H Club Reporter

With summer just around the corner, the Prairie Winds 4-H Club is still staying active, standing strong, and con- necting virtually with monthly 4-H Zoom meetings. As this was a new experience for our club, the executive members held a test Zoom meeting to ensure things would run smoothly. Everyone was glad to see each other on video, and the test meeting went well with minimal interruptions.

Unfortunately, there were many of the member’s favou- rite 4-H activities cancelled this spring. These included the Battle Lake Work-Bee Clean-Up in Westerose, 4-H on Parade, and our year-end meeting with pizza and banana splits. Although everyone was disappointed, members are doing their best to adjust to the interrup- tions by finishing up their record books and completing online workshops. The club historian is also working on putting together club profiles that include member’s pictures beside their own personalized write up to add to the club history book. He also creates a slide show of photos to commemorate the year. This presentation is shown at Achievement Day and our open house in the fall.

Rather than the 4-H on Parade clothing that is usually available, members are now able to order unique 4-H clothing that is available to everyone in Alberta. These items were designed as an opportunity for 4-H’ers and their families to connect with some fun clothing piec- es, as well as to commemorate the 2020 4-H experi- ence. Some of the fun slogans include: ‘I’m sorry I ate all the quarantine snacks’, ‘2020: The year we pledged our health to better living for our club our community, our country and our world’, and ‘4-H hair don’t care’. The 2019-2020 4-H year is one we will not forget!

Supporting local businesses is more important now than ever before. I have compiled a list of all the local eateries in Ward 3 that are currently offering delivery, take-out and/or curbside pickup. This list is available on my City of Calgary Ward 3 blog, https://www.calgary.ca/ citycouncil/ward-3/Pages/WardArticles.aspx. With people spending more time on their phones and computers lately, there are more eyes on social media pages and highlighting a local business signals to your community that they are still operational and ready to serve you during this unprecedented time.

According to Dr. Hinshaw, it is safe to order takeout and delivery. Dr. Hinshaw recommends everyone wash their hands thoroughly before they eat, with further precau- tions such as disposing of the packages the food comes in and putting the food into your own dishes. Be sure to call and check with the local eatery to confirm their hours as some businesses have had to change their hours in light of COVID-19.

To consider the situation of other businesses in Ward 3, I partnered with some community organizations on how best to develop a coordinated, community-based response to address the pressures and impacts of CO- VID-19. We then put together a survey for Ward 3 resi- dents and businesses that touches on primary needs and/or ability to provide any support, as well as ideal sources for distributing community information. I want to thank everyone who has participated in the survey which has provided a better understanding of where we need to focus our attention. You can check out my Facebook page for more information, such as resources for mental health, financial and food supports.

H I D D E N VA L LEY • HANSON RANCH | JUNE 2020 7 To all the grandfathers, fathers, stepfathers, uncles, and big brothers out there, the HVCA is wishing you a Happy Father’s Day!

Father’s Day originated in Spokane, Washington, in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd who wanted to pay tribute to her father and men like him after hear- ing a Mother’s Day sermon at church. Her father was a Civil War veteran who raised six children as a single parent after his wife died in childbirth. Although the most common date to celebrate Father’s Day is the third Sunday in June, it is cel- ebrated at different times all over the world.
