The Girls from Petticoat Junction Sixties Sounds THE GIRLS FROM PETTICOAT JUNCTION SIXTIES SOUNDS SELLING POINTS: When the classic comedy series Petticoat Junction premiered in 1963—on the heels of its sister series The Beverly Hillbillies—it became • Rare singles and unreleased tracks an immediate hit, ranking #4 for the season. Among the bonus material is a rare 1967 Capitol Records single by Meredith MacRae (“Who Needs Memories Of Him, Goodbye Love”) and the Petticoat Junction theme song sung by original TV series vocalist and co-composer Curt Massey, complete with train whistle. This new CD will be cross-promoted with the November 2011 publication of Petticoat Junction - The History of Hooterville (Bear Manor Books) and DVD releases of Petticoat Junction and The Beverly Hillbillies. Additionally, music videos of key songs will promote the album online and Linda Kaye Henning will be available for press interviews. Petticoat Junction will also be saluted with a tribute at the Paley Center for the Media in Beverly Hills to coincide with the release of the CD and book. Track listing: 1. In the early part of the century the job was somewhat skilled, and seen as a legitimate career for adults to hold. Today the job has been deskilled and mechanized, and retail workers struggle with low pay and lack of concrete benefits. Media narratives have followed these changes. This dissertation seeks to examine these changes and explore the ways in which retail workers have been presented in popular media. It will largely rely on close-readings of a variety of texts including films, television shows, advertisements, and internet memes. These texts were chosen because of their prominence in society during the time periods being examined. Additionally, it uses frameworks which incorporate class and gender in the examination of these texts. In the early 20th century, the department store was the setting of many major films, spanning from the silent era to about the early 1940s.

In fact, my thesis illustrates how progressive traditions for social justice in Black music have acted as a source of agency and a tool for resistance against oppression. This study also explains how the music of African Americans has served as a primary mechanism for disseminating their cultural legacy. I have selected four Black artists who exhibit the aforementioned principles in their musical production. Bernice Johnson Reagon, John Coltrane, Curtis Mayfield and Gil Scott-Heron comprise the talented cadre of musicians that exemplify the progressive Black musical tradition for social justice in their respective genres of gospel, jazz, soul and spoken word. The methods utilized for my study include a socio-historical account of the origins of Black music, an overview of the artists’ careers, and a lyrical analysis of selected songs created by each of the artists. This study will contribute to the body of literature surrounding the progressive roles, functions and utilities of African American music. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH My mother garners the nickname “gypsy” from her siblings due to the fact that she is always moving and relocating to new and different places.
