Watson and Erich Schwartzel July 23, 2020 526 pm ET Walt Disney Co. DIS -0.57% ▲ is making massive changes to its movie-release schedule, including canceling the planned August release of “Mulan,” as the coronavirus pandemic continues to roil Hollywood. Disney said on Thursday it is not only forgoing its planned Aug. 21 premiere of the live- action remake of the animated classic, but is also delaying the release of future installments in the “Avatar” and “Star Wars” series by a year. While “Mulan” doesn’t yet have a new date, Disney said it was moving its next “Avatar” and “Star Wars” movies by around a year each, to 2022 and 2023, respectively. Hollywood studios have been forced in recent months into a game of wait and see as the effects of the coronavirus upend plans to reopen the economy. This is the third time Disney has had to change its release plans for “Mulan.” However, this is the first time Disney canceled one date without providing a new one. MORE ON COVID IMPACT •Coronavirus Rewrites the Disney Playbook (July 20) •Disney Weighs ‘Mulan’ Delay as Theaters Struggle to Reopen (June 24) “Over the last few months, it’s become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis,” said a Disney spokesperson by email. Similar delays at other major Hollywood studios have already forced exhibitors such as AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. to postpone their scheduled reopenings. No major release is now on the calendar until early September, and some exhibitors consider that to be overly optimistic, making it unclear when consumers might return to auditoriums. Some Hollywood executives privately say they don’t expect major releases to come out until at least 2021. Earlier this week AT&T Inc.’s Warner Bros. delayed its coming science-fiction thriller “Tenet” indefinitely. The studio is expected to select a new date soon, and when it does, it is likely the $200 million film will open first overseas and then domestically, according to a person familiar with the matter. The calendar reshuffling changes nearly a decade’s worth of release plans Disney had set for two of its most vital franchises. Four sequels to “Avatar,” James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster, were moved back a year, meaning “Avatar 2” will premiere in 2022 and “Avatar 5” in 2028. Disney acquired the franchise in its 2019 purchase of the entertainment assets of 21st Century Fox. Following the debut of the new “Star Wars” trilogy in 2023, Disney is aiming to premiere the second and third installments of the series in 2025 and 2027, respectively. Fans and analysts are watching the series closely to see what direction Disney takes the space- opera in after mixed reactions followed a trio of movies that concluded last year with “The Rise of Skywalker.” Depending on how quickly the U.S. can get the coronavirus under control —paving the way for theaters to reopen at full capacity—Disney may also have to revisit its existing release plans for the latter part of this year. The studio plans to debut both the Marvel superhero spinoff “Black Widow” and original animated feature film “Soul” in November. Several films developed by Fox before Disney acquired the studio are also on the books for late 2020. Disney’s highest-profile plan for the end of the year is to release Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” remake on Dec. 18. A Disney spokesman didn’t immediately comment on whether the studio was contemplating scheduling changes for “Black Widow,” “Soul,” “West Side Story” or the Fox titles. However, while Disney often has been associated with themes such as childhood, magic, and innocence, many of the company’s animated films have simultaneously been criticized for their offensive and quite problematic take on race and ethnicity, as well their heavy reliance on cultural stereotypes. This study aims to evaluate Disney’s portrayals of racial and ethnic minorities, as well as determine whether or not the nature of the company’s portrayals have become more culturally sensitive with time. To accomplish this, seven animated feature films produced by Disney were analyzed. These analyses are of a qualitative nature, with a focus on imagology and postcolonial literary theory, and the results have simultaneously been compared to corresponding criticism and analyses by other authors and scholars. Based on the overall results of the analyses, it does seem as if Disney is becoming more progressive and culturally sensitive with time. However, while most of the recent films are free from the clearly racist elements found in the company’s earlier productions, it is quite evident that Disney still tends to rely heavily on certain cultural stereotypes.

Underlying assumptions are generally shared with the gender role socialization model and consequently, an importance is stated, due to a high degree to which impressions from media shape in particular young children’s identification processes. For young girls, the Disney Princesses franchise (with Frozen included) stands out as the number one player commercially as well as in customer awareness.

  • {PDF} Mulan: a Story in Chinese and English
MULAN: A STORY IN CHINESE AND ENGLISH PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Li Jian,Yijin Wert | 42 pages | 19 May 2014 | BetterLink Press Incorporated | 9781602209862 | English, Chinese | New York, United States Chinese Tale: Mulan (Original) Chen also says that the title of the poem and the fact that it is named for the female character reflects the respected status that women held in these nomadic societies. One may say the true meaning of the name Mulan is a forgotten legacy of the Tuoba. For around a thousand years, the story more or less stayed the same, a simple, easy-to-understand folk poem popular with the Chinese people. The first known adaptation was in the 16th century, by playwright Xu Wei. It emphasized footbinding, which is not mentioned in the original, as the custom was not widely practiced during the Northern Wei dynasty. The character was later included in a popular 17th-century novel about the Sui and early Tang dynasties, which was a marked departure from the poem. Here, Mulan commits suicide rather than live under a foreign ruler, meeting a tragic end. This version played on gender as well as ideas of national identity against a complicated political backdrop, and some have argued that the renewed interest it sparked in the Mulan story was partly due to its nationalistic overtones and critique of the occupation. Looking back at the original Mulan legend helps explain the criticism over certain stylistic choices in the film, such as the costume and the architecture. For some, the questions over adaptation and historical accuracy are inextricable from the issue of representation, both onscreen and behind the camera.

  • How Disney's Hercules Fails to Go the Distance
Article Balancing Gender and Power: How Disney’s Hercules Fails to Go the Distance Cassandra Primo Departments of Business and Sociology, McDaniel College, Westminster, MD 21157, USA; [email protected] Received: 26 September 2018; Accepted: 14 November; Published: 16 November 2018 Abstract: Disney’s Hercules (1997) includes multiple examples of gender tropes throughout the film that provide a hodgepodge of portrayals of traditional conceptions of masculinity and femininity. Hercules’ phenomenal strength and idealized masculine body, coupled with his decision to relinquish power at the end of the film, may have resulted in a character lacking resonance because of a hybridization of stereotypically male and female traits. The film pivots from hypermasculinity to a noncohesive male identity that valorizes the traditionally-feminine trait of selflessness. This incongruous mixture of traits that comprise masculinity and femininity conflicts with stereotypical gender traits that characterize most Disney princes and princesses. As a result of the mixed messages pertaining to gender, Hercules does not appear to have spurred more progressive portrayals of masculinity in subsequent Disney movies, showing the complexity underlying gender stereotypes. Keywords: gender stereotypes; sexuality; heroism; hypermasculinity; selflessness; Hercules; Zeus; Megara 1. Introduction Disney’s influence in children’s entertainment has resulted in the scrutiny of gender stereotypes in its films (Do Rozario 2004; Dundes et al. 2018; England et al. 2011; Giroux and Pollock 2010). Disney’s Hercules (1997), however, has been largely overlooked in academic literature exploring the evolution of gender portrayals by the media giant. The animated film is a modernization of the classic myth in which the eponymous hero is a physically intimidating protagonist that epitomizes manhood.

  • Redefining Gender in Disney Films from the 20Th to 21St Century Shrien Alshabasy SUNY New Paltz Honors Thesis 2018-2019
Alshabasy 1 "A Whole New World": Redefining Gender in Disney Films from the 20th to 21st Century Shrien Alshabasy SUNY New Paltz Honors Thesis 2018-2019 Alshabasy 2 The Disney Dynasty is as familiar to American culture as apple pie. Sitting on land that is twice the size of Manhattan, the Disney Kingdom has expanded over the years to create a whole new world; a world seriously considered by cultural theorists like Baudrillard, as a simulacrum, a symbol so close to reality that it becomes hyperreality. Before water parks and resort hotels, before Disney bought out the land of orange groves and walnut trees in Anaheim, California, the Magic Kingdom began its conquest on American ideology. The Walt Disney Company started in 1923 as “The Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio,” and churned out films that embodied American ideals. Oftentimes, these films were set in 19th century rural America and featured an American hero -- usually Mickey Mouse, who could outwork and challenge any enemy big or small with his bravery. An embodiment of American ideals, Disney films became loved and endeared by audiences during morally depleting times, like the Depression years (“How Disney Came to Define What Constitutes the American Experience”). Audiences latched onto these ideals, seemingly stable, even when external factors were not. In 1938, Disney shifted gears into feature films with his vision of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Although many had their doubts, after three years of work Snow White was released and it quickly became the highest grossing film of all time. Feature films became the money makers for Disney and the start of consumer fascination with Disney culture (“Disney Animation Is Closing the Book on Fairy Tales”).
