Most Rev. Salvatore J. Cordileone One Peter Yorke Way San Francisco 94109 Most Rev. Salvatore J. Cordileone One Peter Yorke Way San Francisco 94109 June 10, 2014 Dear Archbishop Cordileone, We, the undersigned, respectfully request that you cancel your participation in the National Organization for Marriage’s (NOM) march and rally in Washington, DC, on June 19, 2014. We understand that people of good will may have genuinely heartfelt differences on the question of civil marriage for same-sex couples. Moreover, while not all of us agree with official Catholic teaching on marriage and family, we appreciate the many statements from Catholic leaders defending the human dignity of all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, especially the recent words of Pope Francis: "If someone is gay, who searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” Pope Francis’ words echo the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which states that lesbian and gay people "must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their reGard should be avoided." We respect freedom of religion and understand that you oppose civil marriage for same-sex couples. But the actions and rhetoric of NOM, and those of the event's speakers and co-sponsors, fundamentally contradict Christian belief in the fundamental human dignity of all people. NOM has a long and well-documented history of publishing material that connects homosexuality with pedophilia and incest and falsely suggests that gays and lesbians are trying to "inculcate children." Likewise, the Family Research Council, which is co-sponsoring the event, has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center because of their vitriolic rhetoric; recently, a spokesperson for FRC blamed the growing acceptance of Marriage for same sex couples for the Isla Vista mass shootings. Other individuals with whom you would be Marching and sharing the podium have repeatedly denigrated lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people: Marriage for same-sex couples “would be like saying, well, there are a lot of people who like to use drugs, so let’s go ahead and accommodate those who want who use drugs. There are some people who believe in incest, so we should accommodate them.” --Mike Huckabee "The ultimate goal of homosexual-rights activists is not to legalize same-sex marriaGe. Rather, it is to silence those who disagree with them and, if necessary, to throw theM in jail.” -- Gary Bauer "Folks who cannot reproduce want to recruit your kids". Marriage for same-sex couples is part of “a satanic plot to destroy our seed" . “an assault” which “corrupts, perverts and pollutes.” - - Bishop Harry Jackson, Jr.: “Well if it’s a civil right for a man to marry man, and a woman to marry woman, what’s the difference of a man deciding he wants to have sex with a dog?” -- Rev. Bill Owens, Sr. Moreover, NOM's promotional video for this event – which includes your image - uses incendiary rhetoric about those who support the freedom to Marry for same-sex couples: “[Their] goal is silence and punishing anyone who disagrees. ... This is not tolerance, it’s tyranny. You have a choice. You can remain silent in the face of oppression or you can stand up and fight for the truth. ... These same sex advocates wish to silence anyone who disagrees with them.” By standing alongside these individuals and organizations, you appear to be endorsing their troubling words and deeds, which directly contradict the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' pastoral teaching that "God does not love someone any less simply because he or she is homosexual. God's love is always and everywhere offered to those who are open to receiving it." (Always Our Children, 1997) Many people of faith who have different opinions on the question of civil marriage for saMe-sex couples have come together in respectful dialogue and discernment to discuss those differences. Sadly, the actions of NOM and its invited speakers push us farther apart rather than bringing us together. We ask that you will reconsider your participation and join us in seeking to promote reconciliation rather than division and hatred. Sincerely, California Lt. • Homophobia As Terrorism*
FOREWORD: HOMOPHOBIA AS TERRORISM* MARl J. MATSUDA** Somewhere today a child stayed home from school fearing violence. Some where today a mother sits in a hospital, waiting to see a child on hold for suicide watch. Somewhere today a child is self-medicating by sniffing paint thinner to avoid thinking about a scary secret. Welcome to another day for children in homophobic America. There is one thing about this day that is different: we are here talking about homophobic terrorism directed at children. The wonderful staff of The Georgetown Journal of Gender and the Law have worked hard to bring a new journal to our Law Center and to organize this Symposium. Through the act of convening, they are saying: we want to know what it is like for children and their families to live in the land of homophobia. We want to know what it is like for them to face hatred and violence in places that are set aside for learning and community. We want to imagine the possibility of a different world. The participants in this Symposium are at the forefront of this struggle. They are making visible a form of child abuse that we are told does not exist, and they are working to infuse respect and care for all citizens into the social and political practices of educational institutions. During the week of this Symposium, in a seemingly unrelated event, the Supreme Court decided a deportation case in which it denied the First Amend ment rights of resident aliens. In that case, Reno v. American-Arab Discrimina tion Committee, I the government used the justification of fighting terrorism as an excuse for setting aside the Bill of Rights.

  • July 25, 2014 President Barack Obama the White House 1600
July 25, 2014 President Barack Obama The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President: We write to encourage robust civil society participation in the upcoming U.S.- Africa Leaders Summit, and in keeping with the theme of the Summit, “Investing in the Next Generation,” we urge particular attention to the rights and opportunities of the next generation of Africans who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT). Unfortunately, across much of the African continent today, the contributions of LGBT communities are denied or denigrated; their relationships and organizations are criminalized; and hostile political rhetoric seeks to deny their rightful place in African society. In the face of this repression, civil society leaders are standing up and demanding full citizenship. These brave voices are demanding a better future for all citizens of Africa, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, and the Summit provides an unprecedented opportunity to showcase their investments in human dignity. Given how some African governments deny the rights of their LGBT citizens, and the unique role that civil society plays in defending those rights, we urge you to include civil society voices in the official meeting of African leaders during the Summit. We welcome the opportunity for civil society to convene at a forum two days before the leadership meeting, but that forum is not an adequate substitute for civil society participation in the high-level dialogue with heads of state. Recognizing the need for candid discussion at the leadership meeting, we nonetheless believe that civil society participation could be structured to stimulate dialogue without necessarily limiting honest diplomatic exchange.

For Release Wednesday, December 16, 2009 More info: Peter Montgomery 202-744-0941 See list of expert contacts at end of release New Report Documents ‘Decade of Progress’ on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equality in America Study points to dramatic gains between 2000 and 2009 SAN FRANCISCO – As the decade draws to a close, a new report shows the past 10 years have been a period of dramatic gains in equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in America. Two-thirds of the 36 statistical indicators compiled in A Decade of Progress on LGBT Rights showed significant advances, including sharp increases in the number of LGBT Americans protected by nondiscrimination and family recognition legislation at the state level. Just over a quarter of the indicators were negative, and two showed mixed results. The report is a joint project of the LGBT Movement Advancement Project and the Evelyn & Walter Haas, Jr., Fund. The report is available at www.lgbtmap.org. “The remarkable achievements toward LGBT equality tend to be obscured by day-to-day struggles, and overall progress often goes unnoticed nationally” said Linda Bush, Executive Director of the LGBT Movement Advancement Project (MAP). “By looking broadly at the last decade, this report gives a much fuller perspective on where we are today -- and how far we’ve come in just ten years.” “From over 50 years of supporting causes that help advance equality, we understand that making meaningful change requires time. But these facts make it clear that equal rights for gay people are advancing at an exceptional rate,” said Ira Hirschfield, President of the Haas, Jr.

December 1, 2011 The President The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20500 Re: Religious Exemptions in Women’s Health Amendment Rule Dear Mr. President, On behalf of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, National Center for Lesbian Rights, and National Center for Transgender Equality, we write this letter to encourage you not to expand the religious exemptions for health providers to deny health care services and supplies to women based on religious refusal policies initiated under the Bush administration. We applaud the recent announcement that Qualified Health Plans under the Affordable Care Act must provide contraception to women as preventive health services with no co-pay, but are concerned about recent reports that the Administration is considering carving out a religious-based exemption to this important provision. As advocates for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights, we know the damage that religious refusal policies can cause public health programs. So-called “conscience clauses” privilege private beliefs over evidence-based best practices in public health, allowing providers to pick and choose the prevention, treatment, care and support services they wish to offer people based on their own beliefs instead of proven methods. Enacting such clauses eliminates safe guards that should ensure any population, particularly those who are most vulnerable, get the services they need. Indeed, it is typically the most vulnerable whose access to services are denied – such as the LGBT community in PEPFAR programs. A broad religious refusal exemption for preventive health care would erode public health and set a dangerous precedent. We therefore urge your administration to reject any broadening of the religious exemption, which would deny women access to contraceptives, a key component in promoting women’s optimum health.
