Having survived a Vietnamese POW camp, the ex-military men nicknamed, ‘The Chain Breakers’, reveal the spirit of rebellion is never age-specific. Amazing Leonardo boldly moves beyond the common stereotypes about the gifted artist, visionary scientist and brilliant inventor, to unveil the intriguing mysteries about da Vinci’s life. The audience is taken on a fascinating journey in history and time, spanning locations that include da Vinci’s native Tuscan town of Vinci and the region’s countryside as well as Florence, Milan, Rome, and several sites in France. Informed by the research of art historian Pietro C. Marano, who is a member of Italy’s national panel of da Vinci experts, this film is an outstanding art movie about the life of the astonishing painter, and extraordinary man. 6 “A charming film” Welt DIRECTOR: Florian Gallenberger CAST: Elmar Wepper, Emma Bading, Monika Baumgartner 2018 | 115 min | Germany | Comedy, Drama | German with English subtitles AS GREEN AS IT GETS Grüner wird’s nicht, sagte der Gärtner und flog davon Georg “Schorsch” Kempter is a grumpy gardener in a small Bavarian town, whose nursery is facing bankruptcy. His marriage has lost its magic and he can’t connect with his daughter. It is only when flying in his own rickety biplane that Schorsch feels truly free. When the owner of the golf course refuses to pay him because the grass Schorsch has planted there is not “as green as it gets”, Schorsch finally snaps. Just as his plane is about to be impounded, he grabs the control stick and flies away on a voyage into the unknown. This feel-good road movie also seconds as a postcard of the German countryside with stunning aerial shots of a journey brimming with rare surprises and delightful characters. OFFICIAL SELECTION: Shanghai International Film Festival 2018 7 “One of the most emotionally honest and deeply satisfactory films” The Observer 1945 DIRECTOR: David Lean CAST: Celia Johnson, Trevor Howard, Stanley Holloway, Joyce Carey 1945 | 87 min | United Kingdom | Romantic drama | English language BRIEF ENCOUNTER (Restored) ‘It all started on an ordinary day, in the most ordinary place in the world.’ Achingly beautiful, the beloved 1945 romantic drama Brief Encounter is arguably David Lean’s finest work – striking at the heart and at the soul. Two strangers meet and although they are both happily married, they fall in love and continue to meet – even though they know their illicit romance cannot last. Adapted from a one-act play by Noel Coward, this is director David Lean’s most intimate and poignant film, the first to land him an Oscar nomination. The two leads give pitch-perfect performances as the buttoned-down couple who find a new awakening after years of dull routine, while the accompanying musical score makes perfect use of Rachmaninoff's beautifulSecond Piano Concerto. WINNER: Feature Film, Cannes Film Festival 1946 NOMINATED: Best Actress, Best Director, Best Writing, Screenplay, Academy Awards 1947 8 “Honest, fun and life-affirming with a nice little twist.” MAGASINET LIV DIRECTOR: Hella Joof CAST: Birthe Neumann, Kurt Ravn, Charlotte
