To be Black is to be exceptional simply by existing. To breathe while Black is to thrive. To move, and wake up, and allow ourselves the glorious, Godly space to be Black, without fear of retribution or limiting the infinite space we are blessedly entitled to -- is a revolution. There is nothing I love more than seeing us flourish, seeing us beam and shine and glow like the beloved moonlight on water. Yes, we too can be soft. We too create. In fact, the wombs, heartbreak, song, seeds sown by our foremothers birthed this entire nation. While their mouths suckled from our breasts, their whips cracked our back. While we used braiding to design escape routes, they call it KKK boxer braids. They hold vigils for Charleston, and metanoias against White Supremacy, only to have a White woman tell us to praise the police who pushed, shoved, lied, belittled and protected a eugenicist. A Latinx man was expelled for his artistic expression of his resistance to a Klan-run administration that served as an affirmation for those of us who aren't of the caucaus mountains. -

This interview is being conducted on Barry Chism. Let's start with the beginning of your life. When were you born? Mr. Chism: I was born on May 21, 1925, about a mile and a half south of here in Greenbrier, Tennessee and I haven't been afar from this spot forever. With the exception of going to war... Mr. Chism: Well that was not voluntary, but I did go. I was kind of hoping and kind of hoping and kind of thinking that the war was going to end before I got into it because of my age. I was drafted a twenty-five year old man and pretty soon they dropped it down to a twenty-one year man and I thought that I was still in pretty good shape. I wasn't twenty-one yet but I was still in high school. I believe it was in 1942 that they dropped the draft age down to eighteen. But they guaranteed you; supposedly, a year’s training before you go overseas. That was in the bill that passed by our lawmakers at that time. No person under the age of nineteen would be sent overseas. I still thought I was in pretty good shape. So I did manage to graduate from high school, then the draft got me. I wound up beginning to take basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama. But first they pick you up and send you to what is called a reception center. I don’t know why they call those things reception centers. We didn't get such a good reception there. -

1 EXCERPT FROM BACK IN THE WORLD, A DRAMATIC FULL-LENGTH PRODUCED PLAY IN ONE ACT. The play, a series of interconnected monologues delivered by four black veterans of the Vietnam War recall, reflect on and relive some of their searing experiences before, during and after their service in Vietnam. A fifth character—The Man—is a homeless Vietnam Veteran who lives day-to-day in Detroit and fights to maintain his sanity against the backdrop of urban gunfire and the sounds of police helicopters patrolling the skies and sounding (at least to him) like the Huey helicopters he became familiar with in Vietnam. The Man has something in common with the other characters; they may not remember his name but at one point or another, this nameless man has touched the lives of the other characters. Theatrically, he serves as something of a ghost providing “memory dialogue” with the other characters. Anthony “Jam” Brazil is from Indianapolis. He is a veteran of the Fourth Infantry Division: “Duc Pho, May ’69. Saigon, October ’71, December ’71.” He has seen a lot of action and the persistent memory of it hurts. As he states early on in his monologue he has killed about as many people as are in the theater listening to him—some Viet Cong, some Chinese. But it is the innocent casualties he remembers most. Brazil: I killed a seven-year old boy once. Seven or eight. Easiest thing I’ve ever done. Killin’ that boy. Didn’t look back, don’t regret it. I mean, that’s what bein’ a soldier’s all about, right? No frets, no regrets. -

PLAYING AGAINST THE ROLES SCENE 1 Scene 1. The roof of Daniel and Estrella’s old apartment complex. DANIEL: Estrella! Why did you want to meet here? We’re going to miss the party! ESTRELLA: Can you believe how much this place has changed? DANIEL: I don’t even recognize it. ESTRELLA: It’s all so… white. It used to be filled with smells and sounds and people. DANIEL: Like the sounds of my terrible violin playing. ESTRELLA: I remember the smells that came from those windows. Mi abuela cooking (She pauses and smells the air) mole and fresh tortillas, and elote, and capirotada. DANIEL and ESTRELLA: and that awful Posole. They both make a face. DANIEL: We played for hours. ESTRELLA: With my Barbies. DANIEL: They were rich. ESTRELLA: and they had a swimming pool and like 10 kids and they always fought. DANIEL: Like my mom and dad. Before he left… ESTRELLA: but remember… we would run away and sneak out. DANIEL: And just lay up here and just look at the stars. They sit in silence remembering the past. DANIEL: You know… in a new place, you can be anyone you want. ESTRELLA: Easy for you to say, ”Dannie Beckerman football star.” (She laughs to herself) DANIEL: Speaking of… that party. You promised you’d come. ESTRELLA: I know. Just one more minute. 1 Scene 2 Scene 1. Friday Night. A teenage house party. We hear bumpin music, perhaps something by Drake or Kanye. DANIEL AND ESTRELLA enter the party. There are groups of mostly McGregor High School students scattered about the room laughing and talking loudly. -

The Not-So-Reality Television Show: Consumerism in MTV’s Sorority Life Kyle Dunst Writer’s comment: I originally wrote this piece for an American Studies seminar. The class was about consumption, and it focused on how Americans define themselves through the products they purchase. My professor, Carolyn de la Pena, really encouraged me to pursue my interest in advertising. If it were not for her, UC Davis would have very little in regards to studying marketing. —Kyle Dunst Instructor’s comment:Kyle wrote this paper for my American Studies senior seminar on consumer culture. I encouraged him to combine his interests in marketing with his personal fearlessness in order to put together a somewhat covert final project: to infiltrate the UC Davis- based Sorority Life reality show and discover the role that consumer objects played in creating its “reality.” His findings help us de-code the role of product placement in the genre by revealing the dual nature of branded objects on reality shows. On the one hand, they offset costs through advertising revenues. On the other, they create a materially based drama within the show that ensures conflict and piques viewer interest.
