Master’s Degree Programme in EUROPEAN, AMERICAN AND POSTCOLONIAL LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE Final Thesis Almost, Both, Neither Fragmented Identities in Contemporary Black-to-Jewish Passing Literature Supervisor Prof. Simone Francescato Assistant supervisor Prof. Dr. Pascal Fischer Graduand Emilia Munaro 847314 Academic Year 2017/2018 ABSTRACT The United States have long been characterized by a strong racial binarism, that sees white people as superior to non-whites. Slavery, segregation and inequality have led to racial passing, an act that featured light-skinned black individuals passing for white. In some specific cases these individuals passed for Jewish. This is particularly interesting because Jews, although now considered to be part of the mainstream white race, have been seen for a long time as mere ‘off-whites’, a minority group at best, if not straight-out inferior. Passing continues to be an interesting topic for fiction writers, even after the decrease of real-life passing. Critics have mostly focused on black-to-white passing, neglecting the different types of white that have existed in the Unites States before they merged into one main category. These other minority groups, which due to their white skin belonged to the white race but at the same time were seen as inferior, offered a middle ground between the two main races of the binary, opening new possibilities for individuals who had a fragmented identity and who saw passing not only as an opportunity concerning social and economical status and legal benefits, but also as the means through which they could resolve their fragmentation. This thesis seeks to shed light on the importance of Black and Jewish identities in the contemporary novels Caucasia by Danzy Senna and The Human Stain by Philip Roth. -

Friedman* At Stanford Law School, there are a stunning number of student organiza- tions. Some of them have been around for a while. Others come and go. We have or have had organizations of black students, Hispanic students, Native American students, Asian and Pacific Islander students, gay and lesbian students, Jewish students, Christian students, women students, older students, students interested in high technology, students interested in entertainment law. Most of these groups are identity groups. A few are groups organized around some field of law. When I went to law school, almost fifty years ago, there were (ifI am remembering correctly) none of these organizations. To be sure, there were very few women or minority students in law school at that time. -

ABSTRACT Taking as it basis the longstanding alignment of men with an active, eroticised gaze and women with visual spectacle within Western culture, this thesis demonstrates the prevalence of this model during the Victorian era, adopting an interdisciplinary approach so as to convey the varied means by which the gendering of vision was propagated and encouraged. Chapter One provides an overview of gender and visual politics in the Victorian age, subsequently analysing a selection of texts that highlight this gendered dichotomy of vision. Chapter Two focuses on the theoretical and developmental underpinnings of this dichotomy, drawing upon both Freudian and object relations theory. Chapters Three and Four centre on women’s poetic responses to this imbalance, beginning by discussing texts that convey awareness and discontent before moving on to examine more complex portrayals of psychological trauma. -

The Philosophy of Fractals Rick Delmonico The Fractal Nature of Living Systems In the graph shown above. The circle is the full size of the universe. The spiral line is what we see when we look out into space, spiraling back into time to a smaller and smaller universe. Space may be spinning in relationship to time, also notice the golden ratio. It looks as if space/time may have a fractal dimension of 1.618. At the center of the graph is the beginning of time. If you study this model closely, you will notice that space expanded at a rate far greater than the speed of light. Originally drawn in 1997. In the beginning unity. The distinction between the one and the many or inside and outside could be visualized as a M ö bius transformation of a sphere, Klein bottle, or maybe a torus or double torus, expressing itself as one, then two, then three dimensions. There are many opinions, and many clues as to how this might be happening, but nothing conclusive. The geometry and dimensions are some variation of emergent properties, repeated at all scales. Folder of all support documents. Let's say we set up three boxes to isolate two measurable qualities of an electron. If there are two spin geometries, one being a spin about the center axis and the other fluctuating between the center point and the surface of the torus or sphere so that if you isolate the geometry of the center spin in box A and then isolate the other component spin which is fluctuating between the center and the surface in box B you would still have half the remaining orientation being opposite at box C, (which measures the same thing as box A) once again. -

Au Vepso Is a Sometime Literary Magazine
Au vepso is a sometime literary magazine. And V7hat, you ask, may that mean? For is not this "magazine," mimeographed and stapled as it is, with no table of contents, occasionally appearing at the vjhim of volunteer workers and obsessed romantics—obsessed by the idea that the hard finality of the printed creative work of St. John's students might enrich the conversation in some meaningful way—is not this "magazine" a work of sheer lunacy? It is indeed occasionally, sometimes, and never very successfully literate, but in the past this phrase "some time literary" has come mainly to mean the pretentious, the over blown, the Still-Idolized abortion. In the past the crisp sureness of AU verso's neatly typed pages has given an illusory permanence to works which should never have seen the light of day. We hope you will not find these vices in the present issue. Yet we wish to raise a most troubling question and one most important; this venture with aims and potentialities so high—to reflect, serve, and enrich the intellectual and artistic life of the college—is it possible that this venture be carried out by but a handful of deluded idealistic dreamers? All those who have been intimately connected with the demon bitch AU ITiRSO know this to be impossible. Every prior AU VERSO has implicitly pleaded for help; in this AU VERSO let us explicitly plead for your contributions, no matter how ill-formed and incomplete you think them to be, hoping that we find in you the absurd romanticism necessary for such a huge and thankless task.
