I examine how song and dance – sites of aesthetic difference within the musical – can warp time and enable marginalized and semi-marginalized fans to imagine different ways of being in the world. Musical numbers can complicate a linear, developmental plot by accelerating and decelerating time, foregrounding repetition and circularity, bringing the past to life and projecting into the future, and physicalizing dreams in a narratively open present. These excesses have the potential to contest naturalized constructions of historical, progressive time, as well as concordant constructions of gender, sexual, and racial identities. While the musical has historically been a rich source of identification for the stereotypical white gay male show queen, this project validates a broad and flexible range of non-normative readings. -

In the creation and production of The Complete Works of Stephen Sondheim [abridged], I showcased factual insight on one of the most prolific writers of musical theatre and infused it with comedy in order to educate and create appeal for Stephen Sondheim’s works, especially those lesser known, to a wider theatrical audience. -

Black Snow Keith Reddin’s dramatization of the novel by Mikhail Bulgakov Crumbs From the Table of Joy Lynn Nottage The Flick Annie Baker Fourth-Year Drama Productions 2019-20 Season A Message From Evan Yionoulis Welcome to the Juilliard Drama Division’s fourth-year rep, featuring Lynn Nottage’s Crumbs From the Table of Joy, directed by Melissa Maxwell, a compelling portrait of a family’s movement from grief toward healing in a decade of political, racial, and social upheaval; Annie Baker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, The Flick, directed by Zi Alikhan, in which three movie theater employees sweep up spilled popcorn and discarded candy cartons, revealing hidden longings beneath the routine; and Black Snow, Keith Reddin’s dramatization of the novel by Mikhail Bulgakov, directed by Dustin Wills. The novel, a satiric love letter to the theater set against the gathering clouds of government repression, was written in the late 1930s but not published until 1967, almost 30 years after Bulgakov’s death. Our fourth-year actors, in their final year at Juilliard, call on their passion and conviction, as well as all aspects of their training, to bring to life this exciting and diverse roster of plays. They have the privilege of working under professional directors and in worlds created by extraordinary teams of designers. We are so happy to have you here to share this work and look forward to seeing you back here in the spring for productions of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra, directed by Tim Hoare, and Twelfth Night, directed by Peter Francis James, featuring our third-year actors.
