Smith served on the FSBGC board of directors for 43 years and was board president in 1978-1979. He was inducted into the Boys & Girls Club Hall of Fame in 2012.

Fall 2017 www.fsbgc.org Page 5 COX COMMUNITY CONCERT BENEFITS BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS With an estimated 8,000 people in attendance, the annual Cox community concert on September 15 proved to be a big success. The Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club and Mercy Foundation were selected as the two charities for the event, which featured country music legend Mark Chesnutt. Shooter Jennings along with Cody Canada & the Departed served as warm-up acts for the evening. Proceeds from concession sales were split between the two charities. 80 volunteer workers from the Boys & Girls Club and Mercy Foundation helped operate concession sales. For the past nine years, Cox Communications has provided a “free” concert for the Fort Smith area. Although the concert was free, tickets for admission were required. Patrons were able to pick up the their free tickets at specified locations. Page 6 www.fsbgc.org Fall 2017 2017 Chaffee Crossing FSBGC HAUNTED HOUSE OFFERS SCARY FUN For the past 24 years, the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club Haunted House has given visitors a night of frightening delights. The annual event opens at 7:30 on Friday and Saturday nights at Chaffee Crossing, beginning Friday the 13th and open October 13,14,20,21,27,28 & 31. Our Haunted House is considered the largest in the state of Arkansas. A tour through the 27,000 square foot facility takes about 30 minutes. More than 75 volunteers help work scenes. Page 8 www.fsbgc.org Fall 2017 Annual Community Outreach Provides Clothing for Needy For the fourth straight year, volunteers from Community Bible Church, Arvest Bank, Starbucks, Life 98.7 FM radio and the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club, worked together to host an Outreach event at the Jeffrey Boys & Girls Club on August 9. Hundreds of people attended and were thankful for the opportunity to collect clothing (in very good condition) donated by Community Bible church members and area volunteers. Participants were treated to live entertainment, complimentary beverages from Starbucks, and grilled hot dogs and chips from Arvest Bank. Event coordinator Jackie Flake has been active in T.J. Participants wait in line at Jeffrey Boys & Girls Club during the August 9 clothing give-away. 2017 Arkansas Area Council Fall Meeting Held at FSBGC Boys & Girls Club executives and board members from around the state were in Fort Smith on September 28 for the Arkansas Area Council meeting. The meeting was held at the Evans unit. FSBGC Alumni board member Jim Petty, who is a former chairman of the Area Council, presided over the day-long event. Several national staff members were in attendance to help provide training and resources. Clubs attending included Little Rock, Van Buren, Fayetteville, Benton, Siloam Springs, Alma, Waldron, Jacksonville, West Helena, Booneville, Malvern, McGehee, and Fort Smith. The Arkansas Area Council meets twice a year. The spring meeting is held in Little Rock in conjunction with the State Youth of the Year program. The meetings provide Clubs the opportunity to partner on events, share training and resources, and network for the greater good of young people served. Fall 2017 www.fsbgc.org Page 9 2018 ALUMNI & FRIENDS MEMBERSHIP DRIVE UNDERWAY Friends and former members of the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club are invited to become a member of the Alumni & Friends Association. The 2018 membership drive is underway. Previous members are asked to renew their membership. Go to www.fsbgc.org to join. During the past 27 years, close to a million dollars has been raised for the FSBGC through the Alumni & Friends Association. A minimum of $25 is all it takes to join. You do not have to be a past Club member to be eligible. Membership levels include: active, silver, century, gold, platinum, lifetime and the Jeremiah Milbank Society. The Association has been instrumental in supporting Alan Swaim Lex Mickle several important programs and events at the Club, both 1983 Volunteer of the Year 1986 Youth of the Year through volunteer manpower and financial resources. 2017 ALUMNI & FRIENDS BBQ Recently the Alumni & Friends Association provided $25,000 in operation support to the Boys & Girls Club. BURLSWORTH FOUNDATION PROVIDES RAZORBACK TICKETS TO CLUB MEMBERS Seeing a razorback football game in Fayetteville for the first time is a memory that many Club members will cherish for a life time. 25 Club members and 5 chaperones watched Arkansas defeat New Mexico State 42-24 on September 30 “Burls Kids” – Boys & Girls Club members from the in Fayetteville. A walk-on lineman for the Razorbacks in 1995, Brandon eventually became an All-American and was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 1999. Eleven days after being drafted, Burlsworth was killed in a car accident near Alpena, Arkansas. The Foundation provides football camps, high school awards, memorial scholarships, and free tickets through the Burls Kids program. In 2010, the Burlsworth Trophy was created and named in his honor. The award is given annually to the most outstanding division I player who began his career as a walk-on. FSBGC Fall Soccer – league play at Goldtrap Boys & Girls Club includes teams in Minor, Major and Junior leagues.
