In February 1993 MSU took steps to protect the marks of the University by restricting their use. This program allows the University to monitor the quality of the products and ensure that the consumer receives quality merchandise when purchasing an MSU garment or item. The program also allows MSU to positively promote the University and generate revenue that can be used to fund scholarships. So, what is licensing? Licensing is the process of contracting for the rights to use a trademark. copyright. or patent belonging to an institution or other business entity. For the University, it is the ability to protect our marks. promote the institution. and generate revenue. Considering that the consumer associates the quality of a p roduct carrying the MSU logo with the University. MSU wants to assure that association is a positive one.

With a few exceptions. the licensing fee is a standard cost passed on to retailers and consumers, even if that fee isn't collected by the institution with regist_ered marks. In the case of MSU . the licensing program revenue potential was a missed op portunity to share In profits from MSU merchandise.

Cole Proctor Head Coach Cole Proctor enters his fourth season as head football coach at Morehead State with several top returnees and one of the best recruiting classes in school history. In his first season at MSU in 1990, he shared the Ohio Valley Conference's Coach of the Year Award after leading the Eagles to a 5-6-0 record and to the Univer­ sity's best Ohio Valley Conference record (3-3-0) since 1979. Included were back-to-back wins over conference rivals Murray State and Eastern Kentucky to end the season. The 1991 and 1992 teams finished 4-7-0 and 3-8-0 respectively. The l 99 l Eagles had a four-game winning streak in the middle of the season that included three conference victories and a nonconference win over Liberty which inflicted a loss on eventual national champion Youngstown State. The 1992 squad finished in 5th place in the league with a 3-5-0 record. A two-time graduate of MSU, Proctor returned to MSU from the position of assistant coach at Utah, a position he had held since December, 1986. Prior to joining the Utah staff, he spent one season as an assistant coach at Iowa State. He spent five seasons as an assistant coach at San Diego State ( 1981-85). For two seasons ( 1979-80), he was an assistant coach at East Tennessee. Proctor had a successful tenure as head football coach and athletic director at Lees-McRae College for three years ( 1976- 78). Prior to assuming the helm of the Lees-McRae program, he spent three years (197 3-75) as head football coach at Keene (N .H.) High School and Chatham Township High School where he was named New Jersey Coach of the Year by the Newark Star Ledger. He was an assistant coach at Gardner-Webb fo r three seasons (1969-71 ). Prior to that, he spent one season (l 968) as an assistant coach at Lees-McRae. During the l 967-68 academic year, he served as a graduate assistant at MSU. Proctor graduated from Lyman Hall High School in Wallingford, Conn., and also attended Bridgton Academy in North Bridgton, Me., and State College of Iowa, now the University of Northern Iowa, before coming to MSU. He earned a bachelor's degree with an area of concentration in health, physical education and recreation from MSU in 1967. Jeff Judge Jeff Judge enters his fourth season on the MSU staff, his third as o ffensive coordinator. In addition to his coordinator duties, he will work closely with Eagle , wingbac ks and fullbacks. Judge fo llowed Cole Proctor from Utah, where he served as recruiting coordinator during his tenure. He was also involved in administrative and NCAA compliance areas. Prior to joining the staff at Utah, Judge spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Purdue. He was a member of the staff at Iowa State from 1982 through 1986. He earned a bachelor's degree from Iowa State in 1987 and a master's degree from Purdue in 1989. He is married to the former Laurie Mechem of Clarion, Iowa.

Rex Ryan Defensive Coordinator

Rex Ryan, the son of former Philadelphia Eagle head coach current Houston Oiler defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan, is in his fourth season on the MSU staff, his third as defensive coordinator. He will coach Eagle linebackers. He came to MSU from New Mexico Highlands where he served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. Ryan earned a bachelor's degree from Southwestern O klahoma State and a master's degree from Eastern Kentucky, where he also served as a graduate assistant for the Colonel football team. He was a standout football player at Southwestern Oklahoma. He is married to the former Michelle Goeringer of C linton, Okla. They have one son, Rex Payton.

Kevin Carty Defensive Backs The,experienced Kevin Carty enters his third season on the Morehead State staff and is in charge of Eagle defensive backs. Carty has been in the coaching ranks fo r more than 20 years, and came to MSU from the position of head coach at Verona (N.J.) High School. Before that, he was on the Rutgers staff for six seasons. He also has high school coaching experience at Don Bosco (N.J.) High School where he was head coach for five seasons ( 1979-83) and compiled a record of 26- 19-1, capturing the state championship in 1983. He began his coaching career in 1971 as the freshman coach at Wayne Hill (N.J.) High School. In addition to Rutgers, he has co.tched at William Paterson College ( 1972-7 3), Montclair State College ( 1974-76) and Trenton State College ( 1978). Carty has a bachelor's degree from Trenton State in health and physical education and a master's in physical education from Trenton State. Kerry Locklin Offensive Line Former New Mexico State standout and Los Angeles Ram Kerry Locklin begins his fourth season as Morehead S ta t e 's offensive line coach and strength coach. He will also work closely with academics and eligibility. He came to Morehead State with head coach Cole Proctor from Utah, having served as a graduate assistant. Locklin has also served as a defensive coordinator at Western New Mexico. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from New Mexico State and has started work on his doctorate. Richard May Defensive Line

Richard May is entering his first season as an assistant football coach at Morehead State, and he will coach the Eagle defensive line. The 58-year old May, a native of Jonesboro, Tenn., spent 10 years (1974-83) as an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech. Prior to joining the Tech program, he served four years (1970-73) as an assistant coach at Gardner­ Webb, where he became acquainted wi th Eagle Head Coach Cole Proctor who was also on the Gardner-Webb staff. He was also an assistant coach at Carson-Newman, Lees­ McRae and East Tennessee where he earned a master's degree. May spent six seasons in the high school ranks after earning a bachelor's degree from ETSU in I 958. In recent years, May has spent time in early retirement and also served five years in an administrative capacity with Putnam County Schools in Cookeville, Tenn. Ohio Valley Conference

The idea of forming the Ohio Valley Conference originated In 1955, the NCAA formally recognized the OVC as a major in 1941, but could not be implemented until after World War basketball conference, awarding the league champion an II. In 1948, five schools-Morehead State, Murray State, automatic bid to the NCAA post-season tournament. At that Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky and Louisville­ time, the OVC was only the second six-team conference to withdrew from the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic obtain major status from the NCAA.
