Skirts lengthen and become fuller after 1838 and continue this trend into the 60's. Cage crinolines were introduced about 1856 and reached their greatest circumference in the early 60's. After the Civil War crinolines diminished in size, changing from a dome to a cone shape. Eventually only that portion of the crinoline covering the derriere was retained (i.e. a bustle).
