General Conditions for Raft/Orca Bookings at Canolfan Tryweryn General Conditions for Rescue 3 Whitewater Rescue Technician Advanced Courses at the National White Water Centre / Canolfan Dŵr Gwyn Genedlaethol •Rescue 3 Whitewater Rescue Technician Advanced (R3WRTA) training is an ‘assumed risk’ water environment contact sport that may carry attendant risks. •Participants should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own action and involvement. •All R3WRTA courses are staffed by appropriately qualified coaches. Coach to student ratios are in accordance with Rescue 3 guidelines. The National White Water Centre (NWWC) has a pro-active approach to staff training. Occasionally, trainee coaches may be involved in sessions, however they will be under the supervision of an appropriately qualified coach at all times. •Whilst every reasonable attempt will be made to deliver R3WRTA courses, the NWWC reserves the right to cancel or modify the courses due to safety considerations and factors beyond our control including minimum course numbers not being met. •As part of the continual review of safety and associated considerations, the conditions of booking are subject to change, clarification and modification at any time. Only the Centre Director or his appointed Deputy is empowered to vary or waive any of the conditions of booking. Such decisions are totally at the discretion of the Director or the Appointed Deputy. Liability and Insurance • R3WRTA is a potentially dangerous activity. All participants must be aware of this and accept the risks associated with these activities. Whilst the NWWC has an excellent safety record, responsibility for death, injury or illness arising from R3WRTA and associated activities can only be accepted if caused by negligence on the part of the NWWC, its servants or agents. •The NWWC is under no liability whatsoever in respect of loss or damage to property, however caused, whilst at the NWWC, or on a course arranged by the centre at another location. •The NWWC holds public liability cover. Health and Safety Considerations •Due to the strenuous nature of R3WRTA, all participants must be physically able. Anyone with a medical condition or injury which may impede their ability to paddle and swim should consult their medical practitioner to assess their ability to take the course. The centre should be informed of any medical conditions or injuries. •All course participants must be able to swim and be confident swimming in open water (defined as 25 metres). •All participants must be age 18 or over for R3WRTA courses. •Course participants will not be permitted to consume alcohol or drugs prior to or during courses. The centre staff reserve the right to refuse participation to anyone considered to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. •The NWWC staff may require any participant to leave the R3WRTA course if that person acts in any such manner as to endanger him/herself or any other centre user. •The Course Director may require any participant to leave the R3WRTA course if that person is not of a suitable standard to be on that course. • Disabled persons are welcome to participate in R3WRTA courses subject to submission of details to the Centre booking office at the time of booking. Water Levels •There is always the possibility of water being turned off at short notice e.g. in the interest of flood defense or following a mechanical breakdown at the dam. This may result in a change of venue or in extreme cases the course may get cancelled. •Refunds will be made in the event of failure to deliver any R3WRTA courses due to unsuitable water conditions. The NWWC will not accept any liability for any other expenditures or costs incurred by prospective participants. Bookings and Payment • All bookings must be paid for in full at the time of booking. Cancellations and Refunds • Cancelling your booking for any reason more than 30 days before your R3WRTA course date will result in cancellation charges of £50 per person. • Should you cancel your booking for any reason less than 30 days before your R3WRTA course there will be no refund and the full amount will be payable. • No Refunds will be offered which arise from circumstances that are beyond the control of the NWWC other than water levels. • The minimum number of participants for an R3WRTA course to run is 4. If an R3WRTA course has to be cancelled due to there being fewer than 4 participants, NWWC withholds the right to offer to transfer the booking to another date or provide a full refund. We will make every effort to meet the minimum requirement and ensure the course goes ahead, though this might not always be possible. Course Information This is a 4 day course for which there will be a low visibility exercise which will take place on one evening. This will be organised once the course has begun. Pre-requisites for the R3WRTA Course: All participants must: •Be a minimum of 18 years of age •Have completed a Rescue 3 Whitewater Rescue Technician Professional (R3WRTPro) course. Equipment •There is no need to rush out to buy equipment for your course; full equipment can be hired from the centre, please contact us on 01678 521083 beforehand to make arrangements. •Dry suits are available to hire for the course at a cost of £25 per person, per course. •Damage to or loss of centre equipment caused by negligence, malicious acts or carelessness must be paid for at the time at current replacement value. 29) Blaenau Ffestiniog and district The town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, until recently carefully avoided by tourists and neatly excluded by the National Park boundary, was the third great centre of the slate quarrying industry in Gwynedd. Indeed the town owes its existence entirely to this industry; the former rural community was centred on the old village of Llan Ffestiniog 3½ miles to the south. The earliest quarry workings were started at what became the Diphwys Casson Quarry in about 1765, and the giants of Oakeley, Llechwedd and Maenofferen were soon well established or amalgamated from several smaller concerns. Some of the quarries are still in operation whilst others have only recently closed, and only now is some attempt being made to reclaim the desolation produced by continuous indiscriminate tipping of the mountains of grey slate waste which surrounded the town. Our plan shows the locations and their railway connections……. This picture looks out southwards over the town from high up in the Oakeley Slate Quarry workings; The L&NWR station and yard is at centre left, with the GWR premises in the distance above it. Across the fore- ground run the various narrow gauge Dinas branch routes. The former main route of the Festiniog Railway is rejoined by the new deviation line, described in the previous section, in the vicinity of Tan-y-Grisiau. The old station building here is largely demolished, but the goods shed with its wagon turntables adjacent may be noted. At the north end a branch diverges to the left up an incline, whence it can be followed to the lakeside slate quarries of Cwmorthin (680465) and Conclog higher up the valley.

© Lonely Planet Publications Pty Ltd SNOWDONIA & THE LLŶN 3 PERFECT DAYS DAY 1 // CONQUER THE MOUNTAIN Check the weather forecast before making an assault on Snowdon (p226). If you’re fit, catch the Snowdon Sherpa bus to Pen-y-Pass and take the Pyg Track (p227). Time your descent via the Rhyd Ddu Path to catch the Welsh Highland Railway (p244) back to Caernarfon. If you’re not up for climbing, head to Llanberis and take the Snowdon Mountain Railway (p227). You’ll be up and down the mountain in 2½ hours, leaving plenty of time to check out the National Slate Museum (p230) and Dolbadarn Castle (p231) before stocking up on mead at Snowdon Honey Farm (p231). Head to Caer- narfon and watch the sunset over the Menai Strait from beside the city walls before dining at the Black Boy Inn (p235). DAY 2 // BE A PILGRIM Spend the morning exploring Caernarfon Castle (p233) before heading for the Llŷ n Peninsula. Ideally you’ll have prebooked a boat to Bardsey but if they’re not running, make do with gazing at the island from Braich-y-Pwll (p239). Abersoch (p241), Cric- cieth (p243) and Porthmadog (p244) are good places to stop for the night, but Harlech (p218) has the best restaurants – along with another World Heritage castle. DAY 3 // A SCENIC OVERLOAD Wherever you ended up, take the scenic A498 through the Pass of Aberglaslyn and back into the national park. Spend the day pottering along the route between Beddge- lert (p228) and Betws-y-Coed (p222), stopping at the lakes, lookouts and falls.

Snowdonia National Park Authority (SNPA) is committed to the protection and conservation of all aspects of the environment, including the night sky, and as such supports the mission and goals of the IDA. The Authority believes that achieving IDSR status for the SNP will further raise the profile of the Light Pollution issue in Wales following the successful application from the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority in 2013. It will assist SNPA in gaining support in protecting the excellent quality of dark skies which we already have in Snowdonia from the general public, business, and politicians, and to improve it further where needed.

W. Carter, appeared in 1955*. Yet Merioneth has neVer had a published Flora. About the end of the last century Daniel Angell Jones (1861-1936), of Machynlleth and Harlech, compiled a manuscript Flora which is now in the National Museum of Wales. But in later life, it seems, he rather neglected the higher plants for bryophytes, on which he became an authority. In sixty years, British plant geography has progressed from infancy to maturity, and much work has been done in Merioneth ; ecology and cytology have been born, and opinions of the taxonomic status of many plants have changed in the light of experimental work.
