    29) Blaenau Ffestiniog and district The town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, until recently carefully avoided by tourists and neatly excluded by the National Park boundary, was the third great centre of the slate quarrying industry in Gwynedd. Indeed the town owes its existence entirely to this industry; the former rural community was centred on the old village of Llan Ffestiniog 3½ miles to the south. The earliest quarry workings were started at what became the Diphwys Casson Quarry in about 1765, and the giants of Oakeley, Llechwedd and Maenofferen were soon well established or amalgamated from several smaller concerns. Some of the quarries are still in operation whilst others have only recently closed, and only now is some attempt being made to reclaim the desolation produced by continuous indiscriminate tipping of the mountains of grey slate waste which surrounded the town. Our plan shows the locations and their railway connections……. This picture looks out southwards over the town from high up in the Oakeley Slate Quarry workings; The L&NWR station and yard is at centre left, with the GWR premises in the distance above it. Across the fore- ground run the various narrow gauge Dinas branch routes. The former main route of the Festiniog Railway is rejoined by the new deviation line, described in the previous section, in the vicinity of Tan-y-Grisiau. The old station building here is largely demolished, but the goods shed with its wagon turntables adjacent may be noted. At the north end a branch diverges to the left up an incline, whence it can be followed to the lakeside slate quarries of Cwmorthin (680465) and Conclog higher up the valley.

  • Snowdonia & the Llŷn
© Lonely Planet Publications Pty Ltd SNOWDONIA & THE LLŶN 3 PERFECT DAYS DAY 1 // CONQUER THE MOUNTAIN Check the weather forecast before making an assault on Snowdon (p226). If you’re fit, catch the Snowdon Sherpa bus to Pen-y-Pass and take the Pyg Track (p227). Time your descent via the Rhyd Ddu Path to catch the Welsh Highland Railway (p244) back to Caernarfon. If you’re not up for climbing, head to Llanberis and take the Snowdon Mountain Railway (p227). You’ll be up and down the mountain in 2½ hours, leaving plenty of time to check out the National Slate Museum (p230) and Dolbadarn Castle (p231) before stocking up on mead at Snowdon Honey Farm (p231). Head to Caer- narfon and watch the sunset over the Menai Strait from beside the city walls before dining at the Black Boy Inn (p235). DAY 2 // BE A PILGRIM Spend the morning exploring Caernarfon Castle (p233) before heading for the Llŷ n Peninsula. Ideally you’ll have prebooked a boat to Bardsey but if they’re not running, make do with gazing at the island from Braich-y-Pwll (p239). Abersoch (p241), Cric- cieth (p243) and Porthmadog (p244) are good places to stop for the night, but Harlech (p218) has the best restaurants – along with another World Heritage castle. DAY 3 // A SCENIC OVERLOAD Wherever you ended up, take the scenic A498 through the Pass of Aberglaslyn and back into the national park. Spend the day pottering along the route between Beddge- lert (p228) and Betws-y-Coed (p222), stopping at the lakes, lookouts and falls.

Snowdonia National Park Authority (SNPA) is committed to the protection and conservation of all aspects of the environment, including the night sky, and as such supports the mission and goals of the IDA. The Authority believes that achieving IDSR status for the SNP will further raise the profile of the Light Pollution issue in Wales following the successful application from the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority in 2013. It will assist SNPA in gaining support in protecting the excellent quality of dark skies which we already have in Snowdonia from the general public, business, and politicians, and to improve it further where needed.

W. Carter, appeared in 1955*. Yet Merioneth has neVer had a published Flora. About the end of the last century Daniel Angell Jones (1861-1936), of Machynlleth and Harlech, compiled a manuscript Flora which is now in the National Museum of Wales. But in later life, it seems, he rather neglected the higher plants for bryophytes, on which he became an authority. In sixty years, British plant geography has progressed from infancy to maturity, and much work has been done in Merioneth ; ecology and cytology have been born, and opinions of the taxonomic status of many plants have changed in the light of experimental work.
