  • HOUSE RESEARCH ORGANIZATION S E S S I O N F O C U S Texas House of Representatives March 12, 1997
HOUSE RESEARCH ORGANIZATION s e s s i o n f o c u s Texas House of Representatives March 12, 1997 On Deck: Financing Sports Facilities in Texas The Houston Oilers, lured by the promise of a new sports facility, will become the Nashville Oilers after the 1997 football season. Houston residents, in an effort to keep the Rockets and the Astros in Houston, passed a referendum in November 1996 authorizing the city to build a new downtown baseball-only park and renovate the Astrodome to correct bad sightlines and add luxury suites. Local officials estimate the cost of their proposed new stadium at $265 million. The San Antonio Spurs, which have played basketball in the Alamodome since 1993, want a new facility designed specifically for basketball and featuring luxury boxes. The price tag for the facility is unknown. The Dallas Stars and Mavericks want a new basketball and ice hockey arena to include luxury boxes, club seats, and additional concession areas. The cost of a proposed arena is estimated in the range of $180 million to $220 million. Central to the debate over whether to build these sports facilities — and others proposed elsewhere in Texas — is the issue of financing. So far this session, four bills have been introduced to help Texas localities in the economic tug-of-war to attract and retain professional sports teams. Professional Sports Spur City and county development authorities are well aware of the economic benefits of hosting a major Economic Rivalries league team. This has led to increased competition for existing and expansion sports teams.

This season has been incredible and I know you agree with me in hoping it just keeps getting better and better. I can’t wait to see where this team goes! Have you ever thought about where these players start out? What it takes to make it to the Major League? Athletics players that are drafted out of High School or brought in from international locations usually start out in the AZ League. Often called “fire league” or “rookie league,” the AZL season starts in the summer shortly after the draft. Games are at 7pm because the AZ summer temperatures are usually triple-digit. Some of the players have not even turned 18 years old yet.

  • A's News Clips, Sunday, June 27, 2010 All-Star Outing by Trevor
A’s News Clips, Sunday, June 27, 2010 All-Star outing by Trevor Cahill lifts Oakland A's By Joe Stiglich, Contra Costa Times A's starter Trevor Cahill said he's likely to spend his All-Star break logging beach time in his hometown of Oceanside, just outside of San Diego. As things are unfolding, Cahill's agenda could get redirected north to Anaheim. The All-Star Game is at Angel Stadium on July 13, and Cahill is making a bid to represent the A's. He's building a case that's hard to ignore. Cahill limited the Pittsburgh Pirates to two hits over 72/3 innings in a 5-0 victory Saturday night in front of 25,068 fans at the Oakland Coliseum. He struck out a career-high 10 and won his sixth straight decision, giving him the longest winning streak by an A's starting pitcher since Dan Haren won 10 straight from April 18-July 1, 2007. The A's are likely to get just one player named to the All-Star team, and closer Andrew Bailey and catcher Kurt Suzuki figure to get strong consideration, too. Typical of his personality, Cahill (7-2, 2.88 ERA), who less than two months ago was at Triple-A Sacramento, takes a low-key approach about even hearing his name in the discussion. "When I was in Sacramento, I never thought I'd be where I'm at now, or even in consideration," Cahill said. "So just being mentioned, it means a lot. We've got plenty of guys that are good enough to be named All-Stars." The A's were bound to grab attention on 1970s Turn Back The Clock Night, regardless of how they played.
