Some Sources for English Benedictine History
SOME SOURCES FOR ENGLISH BENEDICTINE HISTORY by DOM VINCENT MARRON T h is article concerns the history of the English Benedictine Congregation in particular during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when all the communities which made up the Con gregation were living abroad and sending monks to England to serve on the mission. In recent years, the study of Catholicism in England during these centuries has intensified, and many are now engaged in research into Recusant history. When, as a result of all this labour, the records are known and understood, an assess ment may become possible. In such an assessment the part played by the clergy is bound to be an important factor, and among the clergy the Benedictines, though less numerous than the secular priests or the Jesuits, are worthy of consideration.1 There is at once a difficulty. The records of the Congregation are to be found not only in England but in many places in Europe. The scope, importance and exact location of those that have sur vived the upheavals of the past are known only to a few. Before any history can be attempted, a systematic account must be given of the extant records. My purpose here is to say where some records are today and to suggest where others might be found. The account given will, no doubt, prove incomplete, and may serve as a starting point for a more systematic account. Before considering the records themselves, it will be well to rehearse, for the benefit of those who are unfamiliar with the subject, the origin of the term ‘English Congregation’. -

Introduction - Membership: Since the last congress in 2012, the International Commission on Benedictine Education (ICBE) has hosted two conference of the Benedictine Educators’ Network (BeNet), on in Manila in 2013 and more recently in Rome in 2016. There have also been a some changes in the membership of ICBE since 2012. Br. Edward Englund, OSB, delegate for BeNet North America (USA) was called home to the Lord shortly after our last meeting in Manila. We remember him with affection and commend his soul to the mercy of God. The new delegate for BeNet North America is Mr. Tim Molak, currently headmaster of Woodside Priory School in Portola Valley, California. After many years of dedicated service, Sr. Mary McDonald, RGS has stepped down from the commission. The new delegate for BeNet Pacific (Australia), is Sr. Meg Kahler, RGS, in her role as a member of the Good Samaritan Education Mission. Mrs. Luz Maria Eguiguren stepped down as delegate for BeNet Latin America in order to assume a new role on the commission as our secretary for three years 2013-2016, replacing Fr. Geraldo Gonzalez y Lima, OSB of Colegio Santo Amercio in São Paolo, Brazil and currently serving as the treasurer of the Benedictine Confederation at Sant'Anselmo in Rome as well as host for BeNet 2016. The new delegate for the Spanish speaking schools of BeNet Latin America is Mr. Cristobal Valdez, emeritus headmaster of Colegio S. Anselmo, Santiago, Chile. Chapter 1 The Sixty Years of Foundation, 1615-1676 Dr. Paul Arblaster English Benedictine community life in Paris began in 1615. In that year a group of six English monks from the monastery of St Laurence at Dieulouard in Lorraine arrived in Paris to erect a Benedictine house of studies under the earthly patronage of Princess Marie de Lorraine, Abbess of the ancient Royal Abbey of Chelles. 1 The six monks to form the community were Clement Reyner, Nicholas Curre, George Gaire, Alban Roe and Placid Gascoigne and Dunstan Pettinger. 2 Their first superior was Augustine Bradshaw, the man who had established St Gregory’s in Douai (now Downside) and St Laurence’s in Dieulouard (now Ampleforth). 3 He was installed on 25 June 1615, perhaps significantly the feast of St Adelbert, one of the Anglo-Saxon monks included in the Roman martyrology. This date can be taken as the foundation of the community. It was to take another sixty years for the community to obtain suitable buildings and anything like a secure financial basis. As Dom Stephen Marron wrote (with dates inserted by the present author): It was a very long time before they were securely established [1632], ten years before they were able to purchase any property of their own in Paris [1642], nearly another ten years before they obtained royal letters of establishment [1650] and full recognition from ecclesiastical authorities as a monastery [1656], and still another twenty years after that before they were able to lay the foundations of their church and monastery [1674]. 4 The first community (1615) In 1600 John Bradshaw was the first Englishman to make his profession as a Benedictine monk of the Spanish congregation, in the monastery of St Martin in Compostella. -

In the Middle Ages, Berkshire formed part of the diocese of Salisbury. [This continued until 1836, when Berkshire was transferred to the diocese of Oxford] 2. Berkshire contained two of the greatest Benedictine abbeys, Abingdon and Reading, and the second of these, founded in 1121, one of the last of the Black Monk abbeys to be founded. [Reading Abbey is] located in east of the county, and in east of the diocese. I plan to focus towards the end of this talk on Reading, but before I do so – and as a prelude to set Reading in the wider context of monastic history in the diocese - I want to look at the range of religious houses available. 3. Otherwise all pre-Conquest, but note vicissitudes of: a) Cranbourne, moved in 1102 to Tewkesbury [Gloucestershire]; b) Sherborne, cathedral until 1075/8, after which subordinated as a priory to Salisbury, 1122 restored as an abbey; c) Horton, reduced to priory status in 1122 x 39 and annexed to Sherborne 3 6. -

• • The Antiquarian and the Abbess: Gender, Genre, and the Reception of Early Modern Historical Writing Jaime Goodrich Wayne State University Detroit, Michigan In a 2007 essay on early modern women and literary form, the late Sasha Roberts posed a question at once prescient and provocative: “[C]an formal- ist literary analysis be reconciled with feminist literary criticism?”1 Schol- ars of early modern women’s literature have recently begun to grapple with this query in earnest, analyzing how women’s writing was shaped by the intersection of form, gender, and historical circumstance.2 Yet as Jenna Lay has observed, the emphasis on poetry in this nascent subfield unnecessarily limits our understanding of form: “a narrow focus on poetry would obscure the fact that Catholic women’s formal experimentation in a variety of genres offered sites for engagement in broader religious, political, and literary net- works.”3 Early modern women writers of all confessional stripes frequently composed in prose, most notably diaries, mother’s legacies, and spiritual meditations. Since many of these noncanonical genres lack previous formal analysis, it is time for scholars to begin determining their defining features. As Roberts contended in another pioneering essay from 2007, “women’s lit- erary capital in early modern England was predicated upon their command of literary form.”4 If we are to arrive at the fullest possible understanding of women’s formal choices, we must identify the kinds of literary capital associ- ated with their reception of prose forms. This essay offers a first step toward mapping this terrain by consider- ing how two Benedictine writers, Claude Estiennot de la Serrée (1639 – 1699) and Anne (Mary) Neville (1605 – 1689), engaged with the generic conven- tions of historical writing, specifically the subgenre of monastic history. -

Chapter 4 Woolhampton 1903-2003 Abbot Geoffrey Scott 1. Arrival at Woolhampton ‘My dear confrère’, wrote Abbot Lawrence Larkin in his letter from Great Malvern priory to the brethren in April 1903, ‘Our old home at Douai is being broken up by the French Government, and we are to be expelled from the country…for no other reason than because we are religious men. But Almighty God…has shown His merciful Providence in a way that seems truly wonderful. No sooner is the old Douai closed than a new Douai is open and offered to us on English soil’. St Mary’s College, Woolhampton, overlooking the Kennet Valley, in Berkshire, to which the Community and school at Douai transferred, was the direct successor of a small domestic school which the last chaplain to the Catholic family at Woolhampton manor had established in the early 1830s. In the nineteenth century, it had grown into a small boys’ boarding school, forming a three-sided quadrangle. At the northern end of this quadrangle, St. Mary’s Church, serving as the school’s chapel was the only Catholic church in the district of Newbury until the end of the nineteenth century. With the establishment of the diocese of Portsmouth in 1882, further buildings were erected, and the college became a minor seminary, sending boys to be trained as Catholic priests in the various English seminaries. By 1900, Bishop John Baptist Cahill of Portsmouth, had become anxious about the decline in student numbers and about the future viability of the Woolhampton establishment. He had visited St Edmund’s, Douai, privately in 1902, and when news came of the monks’ expulsion from France, he immediately offered the lease of St Mary’s College to St Edmund’s, Douai. -

A Year of the Word (Designated by the Catholic Bishops of England and Wales) DOUAI ABBEY RETREATS & COURSES PROGRAMME 2020 To mark the 10th anniversary of the publication of Pope Benedict XVI's Apostolic Exhortation 'Verbum Domini' (The Word of God) the Catholic Bishops of England and Wales have designated 2020 as the Year of the Word, entitled 'The God Who Speaks'. This year we are especially pleased to be able to offer a range of interesting and informative weekends emphasising the Year of the Word. We hope these weekends will help to deepen knowledge and understanding of God's Word, encouraging prayer and reading of the scriptures that all might come to encounter, know and love the Lord more deeply. In order to create the right dynamic for discussion and comfortable use of the conference room facilities, numbers are usually limited to 10, unless there is a big demand at times such as the Easter retreat, with 11 places being more usual for Lectio Divina retreats. The offer is for a residential experience. We regret that we do not accept day participants (unless advertised), as from experience we have found that this can adversely affect the dynamic of the retreat experience for a small residential group. Bookings are processed by the guest office, and may be made by completing the booking form enclosed with this programme booklet or on our website. The Guest House require that retreats are booked no later than 3 weeks before each event so that we can maintain availability of rooms for other guests.
