1 The Book of Margery Kempe- Medieval Mysticism and Sanity Abstract: Since the discovery of Margery Kempe’s Book the validity of her visionary experiences has been called scrutinized by those within the literary and medical communies. Indeed there were many individuals when The Book was written, including her very own scribe, who have questioned Kempe’s sanity. Kempe claimed herself to be an unusual woman who was prone to visionary experiences of divine nature that were often accompanied by loud lamenting, crying, and shaking and self-inflicted punishment. By admission these antics were off-putting to many and at times even disturbing to those closest to her. But is The Book of Margery Kempe a tale of madness? It is unfair to judge all medieval mystics as hysterics. Margery Kempe through her persistence and use of scribes has given a first-hand account of life as a mystic in the early 15th century. Bible: The Silence of God 05/06/2018 Psalms 13:1 Rev. Dr. Sunny Ahn [Story] Every ten years, the monks in the monastery are allowed to break their vow of silence to speak two words. Ten years go by and it’s one monk’s first chance to speak. He thinks for a second before saying, “Bad Food.” Ten years later, he says, “Bad rooster.” It’s the big day, a decade later. He gives the head monk a long stare and says, “I quit.” “I’m not surprised,” the head monk says. “You have been complaining ever since you got here.” ++++ What would be your two words to speak if you were this monk after the 10 years of silence? Let’s be realistic here. How about after 10 minutes of silence what would be your first two words to speak? When I shared the topic for today’s message with my husband Sung who is the man of many words, he said he vividly remembers the day he received the 18 hours of silent treatment from me while driving from Seattle to Los Angeles in a rental car. I also remember that day. I was very upset with him and decided not to say a word since I knew nothing good would come out of me at that moment. He said it was the most difficult “punishment” he had to endure in his life. I will not go into details here. Ask him about it. He loves to tell the story and he is good at it. -

Taming the Tongue James 3:1-12 Matthew 12:33-37 A sermon delivered by Reverend Thomas K. Frizzell, Jr, the Chapel Pastor of the United States Naval Academy, on the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost, September 13, 2015. Let us pray, May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. Amen. A new monk joins the monastery, taking a vow of silence. After one year, he is called before the abbot and allowed to speak two words. The novitiate says, “Food bad.” Another year goes by and the monk, standing before the abbot, is allowed to speak two words. He says, “Bed hard.” At the end of three years, the monk is again allowed to speak two words. He says, “I quit.” The abbot responds, “I’m not surprised, you’ve done nothing but complain since you arrived!” In 2005 I traveled to London, England, seeking credentials as a priest in the Church of England, Diocese of Europe, so that I could serve Christ Church in the heart of Naples, Italy. While in London, I stayed in an Anglican Monastery, rising early for communal prayers and taking most of my meals in mandatory silence. I found the forced silence unsettling and I longed to be free to speak at will. Like most democracies, Americans treasure freedom of speech. The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, adopted on December 15, 1791, along with the nine other amendments of the Bill of Rights, regards religion and expression: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. -

SOME SOURCES FOR ENGLISH BENEDICTINE HISTORY by DOM VINCENT MARRON T h is article concerns the history of the English Benedictine Congregation in particular during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when all the communities which made up the Con gregation were living abroad and sending monks to England to serve on the mission. In recent years, the study of Catholicism in England during these centuries has intensified, and many are now engaged in research into Recusant history. When, as a result of all this labour, the records are known and understood, an assess ment may become possible. In such an assessment the part played by the clergy is bound to be an important factor, and among the clergy the Benedictines, though less numerous than the secular priests or the Jesuits, are worthy of consideration.1 There is at once a difficulty. The records of the Congregation are to be found not only in England but in many places in Europe. The scope, importance and exact location of those that have sur vived the upheavals of the past are known only to a few. Before any history can be attempted, a systematic account must be given of the extant records. My purpose here is to say where some records are today and to suggest where others might be found. The account given will, no doubt, prove incomplete, and may serve as a starting point for a more systematic account. Before considering the records themselves, it will be well to rehearse, for the benefit of those who are unfamiliar with the subject, the origin of the term ‘English Congregation’.
