Biographical Description for The HistoryMakers® Video Oral History with James Avery PERSON Avery, James, 1948- Alternative Names: James Avery; Life Dates: November 27, 1948-December 31, 2013 Place of Birth: Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA Residence: Los Angeles, CA Occupations: Television Actor Biographical Note Born on November 27, 1948, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, James Avery left his hometown after high school to serve in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. Avery then settled in San Diego, where he wrote poetry and television scripts, winning an Emmy Award for his production of Ameda Speaks: Poet James Avery. Avery also received a scholarship from the University of California at San Diego, where he obtained his B.A. degree in drama and literature in 1978. Avery was awarded an honorary doctorate from 1978. Avery was awarded an honorary doctorate from Virginia State University in 1996. Throughout his career, spanning over thirty years, as a writer working with a collective group in San Diego, Avery also worked as an actor in television, film, and theater productions. Avery's first acting part came in the role of God in the play JB in 1971 at San Diego Community College. After performing in his first acting role, Avery went on to star in the UPN comedy series Sparks from 1996 to 1998; and had recurring roles on The Legend of Tarzan, Showtime's Soul Food, and The Division on the Lifetime Network. Avery was best known for his role as the uncle of Will Smith's character on the popular sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. -

Television is a universally popular medium that offers a myriad of choices to viewers around the world. American programs both reflect and influence the culture of the times. Two dramatic series, The Closer and Saving Grace, were presented on the same cable network and shared genre and design. Both featured female police detectives and demonstrated an acute awareness of postmodern feminism. The Closer was very successful, yet Saving Grace, was cancelled midway through the third season. A close study of plot lines and character development in the shows will elucidate their fundamental differences that serve to explain their widely disparate reception by the viewing public. Fall 2008 1st Time Charm! Master’s Student Jeremy Wilson Wins a Position in the Vienna Philharmonic Fortepiano Exciting Acquisition— a First for the College of Music rriving in spring 2007 from the McNulty workshop in the Czech Republic, this gorgeous fortepiano, an 1805 Walter und Sohn copy, Ahas already become an important educational and performance tool within the College of Music. Many, many thanks are due to Professor Emeritus Michael Collins, philanthropist Paul Voertman and the National Endowment for the Arts for their generosity that enabled us to purchase this instrument. One of its most interesting uses has been the recording project planned in conjunction with an upcoming book by UNT musicology alumnus James “Chip” Parsons, Professor of Music at Missouri State University and a former student of Professor Collins. A-R Editions will publish Dr. Parsons’ book on early alternate settings of Schiller’s poem “An die Freude” (heard in the famous last movement of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony). The accompanying CD, coordinated by UNT faculty Elvia Puccinelli, will include selections based on the facsimile scores included in the book. Many years ago, in the beginning of Beauty and the Beast fandom, George Martin, one of the show’s producers and writers, was a member of an on-line BatB discussion group. He had a lot of very interesting info to share about his experiences behind the scenes - an explodes a lot of persistant fandom myths about the series. (Many thanks to Marina for sharing this discussion) These are comments by George RR Martin, in response to some fan questions which were part of a complex discussion among participants between January 30, 1993 and May 7, 1995. Questions can usually be inferred from the answers. Sat Jan 30, 1993 Certainly all of us on the show knew that Catherine’s death would be hard for many people to accept. We certainly never just shrugged and said, “Okay, she dies, we’ll get another one.” CBS might have liked us to, I will admit -- once it was clear that Linda was leaving, and we had made the decision not to recast, the network strongly urged us to “get it over with and move on.” Instead, we produced the arc. Say what you want about the arc, but it was in no sense a “getting it over with.” Catherine may have been dead, but her memory and her presence DRENCHED the third season, impacting on every character, shaping their dialogue, their actions, their very look on life. Never in the entire history of television has a dead character been mourned so long and so grievously by so many. Compare, if you will, REASONABLE DOUBTS. -
