We were still just children, but we already had Vietnam to think about. The evening news was a body count. At camp, we didn’t see the news, but we listened to Eric Burdon and the Animals’ Sky Pilot while doing our beadwork with Father Pekarski. Pekarski looked like Grandpa from The Munsters. He was bald with a scowl and a growl, wearing shorts and an official camp tee shirt over his pot belly. The local legend was that at night, before going out to do his vampire thing, he would come in and mix up your beads so that the red ones were in the blue box, and the black ones were in the white box. Then, he would twist the thread on your bead loom a hundred and twenty times so that it would be impossible to work with the next day. And laugh. Baldry was already a famous name at that time. He even had his own hour a division of on television, so big deal. I was called to a meeting the following week with John, his manager and agent. John’s Hoochie Coochie Men were breaking up. It was suggested that my trio, the Trinity with bassist Rickey Brown and drummer Mickey Waller would become the rhythm section of the new band. I added Vic Briggs, John wanted his protégé Rod Stewart to sing with us. I suggested adding singer Julie Driscoll, who at that time was working in my manager’s office but waiting to start a career with a band. The Steampacket were a tremendous success live and went on to be called the first Supergroup. I arranged and interpreted stuff for everybody in the band. Because of arguments as what label to record for, we missed recording our own album. After the breakup, Baldry changed the band into The Shotgun Express and The Brotherhood, with Elton John at the piano. This anthology compiles tunes from before 1966.

Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, the hippie era, and the Civil Rights Movement, among other topics have received thorough historical discussion and debate. Music was another key aspect in understanding the social history of the 1960s. But unlike the people and events mentioned above, historians have devoted less attention to music in the historical landscape. The British Invasion was one such key event that impacted America in the 1960s. Bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who found their way into the United States and majorly impacted American society. Using secondary sources, newspaper articles, interviews and documentaries on these bands, this thesis explores the British Invasion and its influence in the context of 1960s America. This thesis explores multiple bands that came in the initial wave. It follows these bands from 1964-1969, and argues that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who shared common multiple factors that allowed them to attain the traction to succeed and to maintain that success in the United States.
