Moloney 2015 Abstract Investigation into underwater archaeology began, inevitably, with the investigation of shipwrecks. For decades whole divisions of our discipline have focused on studying the intricate characteristics and mechanisms involved in the propulsion, construction, and manipulation of ships themselves (e.g. nautical archaeology). However, as Mortimer Wheeler noted, “the archaeologist is digging up, not things, but people” (Wheeler 1954: 13), so how do we extract information about those crewing these ships from shipwrecks? In this study I examine the spatial organization of ships in an effort to reconstruct the social dynamics of shipboard society.

It is believed that Sinop, lying at the northernmost tip of a peninsula extending from the Anatolian landmass into the Black Sea, derived its name from the Queen of the Amazons, Sinope, who lived there once upon a time. According to another story, Zeus, the King of Gods was so enchanted by the beauty of the nymph Sinope, the daughter of the River God Asopus that he settled her in the earthly locale commensurate with her beauty and the city was named after her. With its history going back six millennia, its rich cultural fabric woven by the several civilisations it has nurtured, its pristine natural beauty and clear blue sea, Sinop, home equally of the philosopher Diogenes and the famed women warriors, the Amazons, remains unforgettable after you leave its shore. 2 Historical Heritage of Sinop Sinop owes its diverse cultural richness to its beautiful natural harbour-perfectly sheltered and calm, a haven from the tempestuous Black Sea. The strategic importance of Sinop Harbour brought Sinop to the fore as a centre of trade across millennia. The city’s strategic importance, however, lead to successive conquests, and each civilization that made Sinop its own adorned the city according to its own fashion, building fortresses, churches, temples, and mosques LQLWVYDULRXVTXDUWHUV7KHVLJQLÀFDQFHRI the harbour still lingers, although the galleys of Antiquity and the Middle Ages have been replaced with the modern sailing yachts and ÀVKLQJERDWVEXVWOLQJDWGDZQ'XULQJWKH season, Sinop Harbour is one of the most preferred stops for yacht tours, including KAYRA (The Black Sea Yacht Rally), and also hosts national sailing regattas.

The Trichoptera fauna of two provinces in the central part of northern Turkey, namely Sinop and Samsun provinces, are listed. They were poorly known prior to this study, with only seven species recorded (Sipahiler & Malicky, 1987; Sipahiler, 2004 and 2007). Most of the listed specimens were collected from the mountains. In the region, in Sinop province, two mountain ranges, the Küre and Ilgaz Mountains, run parallel to the coast, separated from each other by a large plain; the mountains become lower through Samsun province. In this area, 59 species were found belonging to 18 families; of these, 50 species are recorded for the first time in the region (Fig.

Sinop is at the northernmost tip of Turkey, in the middle of the Black Sea region. Archaeological excavations of the entire Sinop province have uncovered artifacts from the Bronze Age dating back to 3000 BC. Most ancient sources indicate that Mithridates is buried in Sinop. It is alleged that the Tumuli on the crest of the historical peninsula, called Boztepe in Sinop, could be the resting spot of Mithridates. There are three tumuli in this area known as ¸SahinTepesi Mevkii (¸SahinHill Site). In order to determine the location of the burial chamber of the tomb, Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) measurement methods were used, which is a geophysical method capable of three dimensional (3D) measurement and evaluation. In the area of the tumulus, measurements were made in a 57 electrode array using a 42 x 36 m (total 1512 m2) spread elec- trode pattern with 6m spacing. In the study, an AGI brand SuperString R1 Resistivity device and equipment were used.
