WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALL SHORT AGAINST FREED-HARDEMAN 79-66

Jackson, Tenn. – Shawnee State women’s basketball dropped their second game at the NAIA Invitational Classic on Saturday night, falling to No. 5 Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) 79-66 at Oman Arena.

Freed-Hardeman established control of the game early, with Chynia Brooks scoring six points early to put the Lady Lions up 7-1. That lead would continue to grow in large part due to Sandrea Sylman, who hit tough shots in the face of good Shawnee State defense. Hannah Miller (SR/Coal Grove, Ohio) would get a lay-in to cut the lead to 11-8, but Sylman took over the game from there, getting two field goals with a pair of Amaria Pugh free throws in between. Sylman would hit a three to end the first quarter, giving Freed-Hardeman a 24-13 lead at the break.

The combination of Sylman and Brooks pushed the Lady Lions’ lead to 28-13 early in the second quarter. Shawnee State got the lead back down to nine at 30-21 on a lay-in by Bailey Cummins (JR/Brooksville, Kentucky), but could get no closer the rest of the half. Brooks and Sylman got the lead back out to 14 a few minutes later, and Freed-Har- deman would maintain their double-digit lead at 38-26 at halftime.

The third quarter would play out similarly, as Freed-Hardeman continued to hold Shawnee State off. Carrie Hatchel would hit a three to give the Lady Lions their largest lead of the game at 52-33 with 6:20 remaining in the third. Shawnee State would then chip away at the lead, with a Shania Massie (SR/Greenfield, Ohio) three cutting the lead down to 62-51 by the end of the third quarter.

Ashton Lovely (SR/Jamestown, Ohio) would get the lead down to eight points early in the fourth quarter, hitting a deep three to cut the Freed-Hardeman lead to 66-58 with 6:44 to go. However, the Lady Lions held SSU away at arm’s length, not allowing the rally to snowball. Hatchel responded with a tough floater in the lane. Lovely and Hatchel traded points again to keep the FHU lead at 10, and Amaria Pugh would make an athletic play on a steal to extend the lead back out to 12 points. From there, Freed-Hardeman sealed the game with free throws and handed Shawnee State their second loss of the season, 79-66.

Shawnee State again struggled from the field, going 23-58 to shoot 39.7%. The Bears went 10-30 from three for 33.3%, and were 10-12 at the free throw line. Freed-Hardeman outrebounded SSU 32-27, and shot 47.4% from the field.

Ashton Lovely had 29 points to lead SSU. Shania Massie was the only other Bear in double figures, scoring 13 points.

Sandrea Sylman had 29 points to lead Freed-Hardeman. Haylee Croom added a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds; Chynia Brooks had 16 and Carrie Hatchel had 12 for FHU.

The loss sees Shawnee State drop to 7-2 on the season. Freed-Hardeman improve to 7-0 on the year. The Bears fall to 1-2 in the all-time series against Freed-Hardeman.

Shawnee State women’s basketball returns to action on Thursday, November 29 when they take on Wilberforce (Ohio). Tipoff from Waller Gymnasium is set for 6:00pm. Shawnee State Bears Basketball 2018-19 Game Notes Shawnee State Bears Basketball 2018-19 Game Notes

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ROLLS WILBERFORCE, 94-49

MARIAN, Ind. – Women’s basketball continued to assert its will on the offensive end of the court Friday evening against Wilberforce to the tune of a 94-49 victory in its opening game of the Leah Whitaker Memorial Tournament. The 45 point margin of victory was the largest such margin for the Bears since the 2009-10 season when they de- feated Malone 107-49 back on January 23, 2010. The win also moved the Bears to 20-1 all-time against Wilberforce.

For the third time in as many games this season, SSU reached the 90 point mark. Priscila Santos led the offense with 22 points on the evening as she went 10-of-17 from the field with two more points on the line. Alannah Sheets also chipped in with 17 points while Rachael Young added 12 points off the bench as she hit four 3-pointers in the con- test. The Bears shot just shy of 53-percent from the field (36-of-68) while limiting Wilberforce to a 12-of-57 shooting night (21%).

The Bears began to blow the game open with twelve and a half minutes to go in the opening half. Leading 11-10 just over eight minutes into the contest, Shawnee State went on a 10-0 run with six of those points coming from Santos during that initial run to go up 21-10. Wilberforce scored the next three points but a three from Young would begin an 18-3 run from the Bears to put them up 39-16 with 3:31 to play in the opening half.

Wilberforce would narrow the margin in the final moments of the opening half but the Bears still took a 15 point lead into the locker room, 43-28. Any thoughts of a comeback from the Wilberforce side were crushed right out of the gates in the second half as the Bears scored 34 of first 36 points during the first nine minutes of the second half to take a 67-30 lead.

A 3-pointer from Kamari Jordan with 6:43 left in the game would give the Bears their first lead of 40 in the game, 77-37. They would never trail by less than those 40 points for the remainder of the game. The Bears largest lead was 47 points which happened on two occasions with the final of those two scores coming with 1:29 left in the game before a Wilberforce basket in the final seconds made the final a 45 point win for the Bears.

Shawnee State will be back in action tomorrow against Trinity Christian (Ill.). Trinity Christian dropped its opening game of the weekend to host Indiana Wesleyan, 75-49, before the Bears took the court for their game.
