6 Shawnee State Baseball Head Coach Ted Tom Ted Tom- Head Coach- 5th Season Head Baseball Coach Ted Tom returns for his fifth season at the helm of his alma mater. In four seasons as the Bears skipper, Tom has compiled a record of 107-114 with a conference record of 60-50 winning the 100thgame of his career versus Campbellsville on Sunday, April 18, 2011. In 2011, the Bears entered the Mid-South Conference and ended their first season in the new conference with a bang. After finishing the regular season as the 2ndplace team in the Eastern Division, the Bears went undefeated in the conference tournament to advance to the NAIA Opening Round. This marked the Bears return to the National Tournament for the first time in 11 years. The 2011 season was highlighted by the play of senior catcher Phillip But- ler. Butler earned MSC Player of the Year honors while also earning 1stTeam All-MSC as he led the conference in almost every offensive category including homeruns and RBI’s. He was also named to the NAIA All-American 1stTeam becoming the first player in school history to not only make 1stTeam but also become a two-time All-American. Four players, including Butler, earned MSC All-Conference honors. Junior Cody Morrison earned 1stTeam All-MSC while juniors Danny Gesick and Kendal Coleman made Honorable Mention. Josue Ahorrio, Aaron Suydam, AJ Gomez, and Jordan Stum each earned MSC Scholar Athlete awards.

The 2010 season marked the Bears final season in the American Mideast Conference and what a finale it became. The Bears became the first team in school history to win the Regular Season Championship which allowed them to host the conference tournament in the friendly confines of Branch Rickey Park. Coach Tom earned AMC Coach of the Year honors for his team’s performance. For only the second time in school history, the AMC Conference Player of the Year Award went to an SSU Bear. Sophomore outfielder Danny Gesick earned Player of the Year Honors as he led the conference in homeruns and runs batted in. Gesick and junior catcher, Phillip Butler each earned Honorable Mention All-American honors becoming two of only 12 other Bears to earn All-American Honors. Ten of Coach Tom’s players earned AMC All- Conference selections. Gesick, Butler, senior first baseman Brian Ramey, sophomore right hand pitcher Austin Dunfee, sophomore infielder Adam Wamsley each earned 1stTeam All-AMC. Junior right hand pitcher Andrew Carter and sophomore third baseman Nick Ball earned 2ndTeam Honors while sophomore outfielder Quentin Everman, junior designated hitter Ricky Masson, and sophomore infielder Jordan Maier each earned Honorable Mention awards. In 2009, he led the Baseball Bears to a 25-30 record and for the first time since 2003, a winning record (18-16) in the American Mideast Con- ference. Four of his players earned All-AMC honors and two more earned NAIA Scholar Athlete Awards including: senior outfielder Drew Howard (1stTeam), senior third basemen Logan Crabtree (2ndTeam), sophomore pitcher Andrew Carter (2ndTeam), junior first basemen Brian Ramey (2ndTeam and NAIA Scholar Athlete) and junior catcher Mike Roelker (NAIA Scholar Athlete).

In Tom’s first season, the Bears finished 16-29 with a 10-16 conference mark. Three of his players earned All-AMC honors including: Jon Venters (2ndTeam), Drew Howard (HM), and Zac Alexander (HM). Prior to his time at IMG, Chris was an assistant coach at Indi- ana University for three years, starting as the volunteer assistant in charge of outfielders and finishing his tenure in Bloomington as the hitting coach as well as being responsible for catchers. Before his time at IU, Chris served as an infield and hitting coach at Tacoma Community College in Washington State where he helped lead the team to record breaking seasons for wins in back-to-back years. During his 11-year career, Chris has had the opportunity to coach a total of 31 players that have gone on to the professional ranks, 14 of which are still playing currently. One player has played on the major league level.

Chris has also had success coaching summer ball throughout his career. In 2011, he lead the Southern Ohio Copperheads to a Great Lakes League Southern Division title and a second place overall finish, tied for best in organization history. Moore won Manager of the Year in the Great Lakes League in 2011 also. Prior to that, he spent two seasons as the pitching coach for the Copperheads. During his second summer in Athens, the Copperheads finished 2nd place. Chris also spent four summers coaching in the Florida Collegiate Instructional League, reaching the league championship game three times and winning the overall championship twice.

30 Shawnee State Baseball Mid-South Conference

On April 24, 1995, the presidents of member schools, meeting in Nashville, Tenn., formed the Mid-South Conference to serve as the competitive base for their entire sports programs. The move effectively merged the athletic pursuits of similar institu- tions. The conference is unique in its broad based athletic competition for men and women, offering championships in 15 sports.

The presidents of each school serves on the Board of Directors which directly over- sees the conference and the office of the commissioner. This administrative "hands on" role of each school's president is unique among athletic conferences and ensures a proper balance in the academic pursuits of student athletes.

True to its commitment to broad based athletic competition, the Mid-South Conference recognizes the value of extensive campus based sports programs that maximize the opportunities for athletic competition among their students.

33 Shawnee State Baseball NAIA

About the NAIA The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participa- tion in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process.

The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association.

The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men's sports pro- gram would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources cur- rently allocated to the women's sports program and vice versa.

Advancing sport with innovative change The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Inde- pendent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports.

Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive dif- ference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the lat- est cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation.

Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student- athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

Some of these courses are funded by the Hodgden Travel Fund and many others are funded, in part, by CIPA.

Students come to SSU for many reasons including a low student/teacher ratio, more than $1.5 million in scholarships, and proven programs that ensure success in the classroom and in find- ing jobs.
